In the endI used parts of several peoples existing contracts to put one together that seems to honor both the stallion owner and the mare owner, as far as any contract can go. Many thanks to Curt Pierce, Peg Knutson, Sara Faull, and esp. Anne Appleby for sending me their already good examples of breeding contracts. I have dealt with 2 Morgan mares breeding them, so am far from experienced, but the subject is of interest to me because I own 2 Fjord mares. One of the most bizarre happening was I bought a stallion breeding at an auction for a local police department (not that cheap - $500). My mare never took, so I was offered a rebreeding the next year. Meanwhile the stallion had an accident and died. The young lady who owned him said too bad, it was a donation, and I could not convince her it was HER donation, not mine! Finally I contacted the police department, and did get my money back. Valerie Pedersen Columbia, CT Mare owners. 1. What is your primary goal in a breeding contract ? To get an understanding of what we both expect, even considering unforeseen circumstances. 2. Does a breeding contract make or break a breeding option ? Please ex plane. Yes, especially if it was not what I wanted, or I did not like the tone, There are plenty of stallions out there. 3. How much weight does does it carry when breeding your mare(s) to a stallion located a greater distance than other available similar stallions ? ( I see alot of history in heavy regional breedings where areas of the Country(s) are flooded with specific bloodlines ) I know from breeding dogs, location is important. Not only for your own convenience, but you have to think of the stress of shipping, you may prefer live cover etc. I think one of the downfalls of Fjords is not many people are that desperate to have the one and only stallion who would complement her mare. 4. Would you prefer both options of live cover AND AI, or do you ONLY breed to ( either ) live OR AI. I would like both options. 5. How much consideration do you give, in breeding your mares, to an Evaluated stallion, or is it not a consideration ? Please explane. Very important. That's a lot of eyes looking and evaluating that guy with a lot more experience than I have. Conversely, if there was something I personally did not like about a 100% evaluated stallion, I still would not choose him. 6. How much consideration do you place on choosing stallions who are advertised ( Fjord Herald, National publications, local flyers ect. compared to ones who are not ? ( Some of those little seen hidden back-yard gems ! ) Quite a lot of consideration. I know from dogs, there are very few back yard gems. Besides, sometimes you need the name behind you. 7. How much consideration do you place on looking at your choice of stallion's OFFSPRING, and their accomplishments ? ( Halter, riding, driving, farm work, evaluations, dressage, open showing, ect. ) That would be very nice, a known quality. 8. Besides the stud fee, booking fee, daily mare care and vet fee's associated with getting a mare to settle and check in foal while at the stallions farm, do you also routenely do pre-vet work ( Uterine flush's, culture to rule out low grade infections, use of Lutalace to bring mares into heat cycles and folicle checks ) BEFORE sending your mare to the stallion ? 2 times a pre breeding check and culture was required. Vet seemed to think they were not necessary. Would never use Lutalace again, poor mare! 9. Do you always sometimesor never insure your mare for shipping and / or stay at the breeding farm ? Not a bad idea. 10. comments please ! I also would like to keep open discussion about the breeding world, since the season is almost upon us. Stallion owners are expected to be the consummate professionals. Also knowledgeable about things not going right and what to do about it. As a first time mare owner I needed their guidance. To datethe breeding contract that Halley O' Mally had when she owned HOSTAR is the best one Ive seen. Anyones thoughts on what to have in it, or not ? Open to all suggestions. I personally have views from being both a mare owner sending mine out, and a stallion owner having mares come in for bookings. I am revising ours here and wondered if anyone out there would share with me a version of the one you use, or just open discussion here. Shipping Contract

I don't haul other people's horses often but find myself making a trip at the end of the month to Illinois (with a trakhener (sp?) and a shetland pony!). This , of course, is due to several life threatening experiences and not with fjörds. By the time I found my Howdie gelding (dec.)and learned what sweeties Fjörds are, I did not have fencing or the desire to have breeding on the premises. I have had my mare live covered and once was AI'd. So I can not comment about any stallion owners having contracts with their organizations. Again, if they did have a contract that stated that the stallion would be dropped from the approved AI listings if it PROVED to have inferior genetic qualities (spelled out) then if that owner signed such a contract they could not come back on the association for legal action. Again, an Association would have to have sufficient evidence before making such a decision. All would not be taken lightly. Verstehen?
