Re: fjord firsts
This message is from: Eileen Perry [EMAIL PROTECTED] That's interesting! I'm assuming that this was the ride near Madras OR? One of my coworkers saw this horse at the ride. She and her husband (a vet), compete on Arabs and crosses. They were trying to figure out what it was (Haflinger, Icelandic, etc). She did mention it took a while to get his PRs down at the checks, not surprising. As far as other Fjords, there is a classic endurance riding book by Linda Tellington-Jones, when she was heavy into the event. One of the plates is a Fjord stallion competing on a ride in Germany, if I recall. I'm impressed, 'cause these days an hour in the saddle is enough for me. Eileen in eastern WA. She had purchased a Dusty son from us a few years ago named Eric - more recently tagged, by Pam as 'Eric the Awesome'. Pam had just completed an endurance ride with Eric and they finished within the allotted time and, oviously, had cleared the vet checks. She was pretty stoked to say the least! CONGRADULATIONS Pam Eric!!! Has anyone else ever tackled endurance rides with a Fjord? I don't recall hearing of any. Pam 'mentioned' that Eric reminds her of Dusty. Dusty is the proverbial energizer bunny and must have passed that gene on to his son! The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

The other Fjord first - I was watching Dr. Phil yesterday as he was doing a segment on the polygamist colony in Eldorado, Texas. Dr Phil was interviewing a woman who had escaped from the colony as a teenager and I noticed a horse's behind in the background. It had the black stripe down the middle of it's tail which caught my 'Fjord' eye. HMMM - wonder IF??? A short time later as the interview continued, the horse had turned around and sure enough - there was the black stripe down the mane and it looked like the mane had been trimmed in the tradtitonal arc. Does anyone know anything about that Fjord? Did anyone else see it? I am anxiously awaiting some of that global warming!! Snow in April is making me very cranky!! This message is from: Gail Russell [EMAIL PROTECTED] There is a woman in Santa Rosa who uses a Fjord out of Anvil's breedingpossibly from the Bishops? I cannot remember the breeders name, but it seems to me the Fjord bloodline originally was from Anvil's stock, but it was an old time breeder somewhere in the west. Not the Weaver's/Two Rivers breeding. That same Fjord also jumps 4 feet. I have noticed in the pics of the polygamist colony that they seem to be pretty decent horse people. Lots of pics of women and children in a lesson situation, and they look like they are decent riders. Gail The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

I don't know of any other endurance RIDERS with Fjords, but there were at one time several of us that did Performance Driving - which is basically the same, but with a cart or carriage - over in central OR, including Virginia Grey with her Dusty daughter Pixie. These drives were run the same as endurance rides, with all the vet checks and such between segments. And I can remember a surprised Vet or two over how well the Fjords were conditioned and how quickly they recovered, even with a few years having temperatures up near 100 degrees! This message is from: Gail Russell [EMAIL PROTECTED] I forgot to mention that my own Claylee's Gunthar was cleaning up in Competitive Trail Riding in BC before I bought himincluding against Arabs. Part of the reason may have been that it was relatively cool there, and, of course, it is not endurance. I actually have some of his clippings file...pics of him coming down a wooded slope in events he won. Gail The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: Tanya Manser [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am an endurance rider with Fjords (I posted them for sale here recently). My mare Ull-Mi is Intermediate (Open) here in the UK. I was hoping Rike might go further (Advanced) but sadly I'm not in a position to be able to keep them any more :((( Fjords certainly need good crewing, and they are never going to beat the Arabs in desert races, but they do a great job at completing the distance.
