As always, I am not really qualified to opine on anything other than how to
get myself dressed in the morning. But I know one of the things that first
drew me to Fjords was how much like mules they are!! Smart, strong willed,
good common sense - all of which can be positive or negative depending on the
situation.

The trainers I know and have worked with have also commented on how alike
they are, finding that they are more like mules to work with than they are like

regular horses.

I have a beautiful mule who is an honorary Fjord, even down to the hairdo.
She is the self appointed guardian to the fjord mare and colt herd Yet defers
to even the smallest fjord when it comes to food.   The mules full brother is
the beloved companion of my stallion.  Both mules are huge compared to the
fjords, being thoroghbred and catalonian jack.    I would not want to even
deal with a fjord mule-they would outthink and outmuscle anything on two or
four feet, but there are more similarities between the mules and the fjords
than most fjord owners would like to admit.

Kathy in southern Idaho, just turned the whole herd out in the big pasture,
what a sight in spite of the muddy shedding coats,

I expect not. He has this nice fjord mare who is pasture bred with this
ugly black donkey and as far as I can tell, they're both out there again
this spring. We have a double fence between their pasture and ours - agreed
upon with the donkey owner - its funny, the fence he built is welded
stainless steel - I think my neighbor knew I meant what I said if his donkey
got in with my girls!

When the Danes visited my home (the Danes who are fjord people who came to
our show last summer), one of the side show attractions was the fjord mules
next door. When my mares are out in the pasture, the poor fjord mare next
door comes right to the fence with a look on her face that says (to me,
anyway), these are not my people. So all the mules follow her. The Danes
got an eyeful of fjord mules - fat as satiated ticks, little feet and legs,
big ears, and all. They were fascinated, grimly fascinated, but unable to
look away. The mule foal of last summer actually had a very pretty fjord
head. I wonder if its temperament was fjord or mule? I'll have to ask my
neighbor if he's taking notes.

I have a thoroughbred, a quarter horse/TB , a mule ( sister to the cross
and daughter of the TB) and a Fjord. Although I have no desire to make
a fjord mule, it really might be a wonderful cross. Both the mule and
Fjord are very very similar in temperament and trainability. They are
not governed as much by the flight response as the horses and I would
trust both of them further than either of the horses. Their response to
new situations is incredible.Their devotion to people and their
intelligence ( and playful personality) is several notches higher than
the horses. They do share a trait that has been mentioned in the posts
on childrens horses and that is incredible strength, particulalrly in
their necks and a different attittude toward authority. You cannot be
just a passenger on either the fjord or the mule - they constantly look
for direction and if you don't give it they are quite confident of their
own direction. They too must realize the similarities. At home, my
Fjords all time best buddy is the mule - they look like mutt and jeff
one short blonde one tall elegant brunette ( yes some mules are simply
elegant) At the place I have her for training, she fell instantly in
love with the mule next to her ( and he her).
Given the proper training, this little fjord mule in the post might be
awsome.
