[Flashcoders] OT: Flash player keeps 'downgrading' itself
OK I know for sure I'm not the only one this is happening to, but I wanted to get a consensus of how common this is. My Flash player keeps silently reverting to version 7, I don't know if it's a website I visit forcing a silent 'downgrade', or something to do with my PC (win XP). [Flashcoders] External Interface Unicode
I'm trying to pass unicode strings into Flash by using flash8.ocx ActiveX control and the ExternalInterface handlers. Thus far I've been observing the XML serialization that comes out of Flash, and I'm trying to mimick that serialization process in the host application (written in Python.) I see that there is an argument element named string, but I don't have much more information than that. Additionally, I have to strip the ?xml version=1.0 etc. etc. ? off of the document I submit to flash8.ocx(otherwise Flash sends back an error), so I'm skeptical about the XML parser that Flash is using. Is there a way I can inform the Flash deserializer about the encoding I'm using, or some other child element of the element that I should be using to indicate the encoding? Trying to pass some live data Unicode characters into Flash for display using ExternalInterface... any insight greatly welcomed. Yes, 2nd post on this, hoped to bump it up. -Eric ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders

Re: [Flashcoders] OT: Flash player keeps 'downgrading' itself
In the case of computers that are downgrading themselves, how many of you have FlashPaper installed. I think Contribute also has a similar issue. That is whenever you launch MS Office apps after upgrading to Flash 8 it will downgrade you to Flash 7 player. But it is a noticeable downgrade in that when you luanch the app, the installer for FlashPaper or Contribute launches and tries to fix things up. At least that was the case with the Flash 8 beta players. I think they fixed something at the end so it shouldn't do that. However there could be a chance that that particular fix isn't applied to the 8.5 alpha player. This is only speculation of course. Sincerely Mark R. Hi Scott, I don't know what your evalAppendedPath contained so I wrote my own to test your code. Everything worked as expected for me so maybe you have a typo in your movie clip names or path. I've uploaded an FLA if you want to take a look at my version: http://www.synergymedia.net/downloads/evalTest.zip My code: function evalAppendedPath (obj:Object, str:String):Object { // Over simplified because I'm unsure what code // you actually have in here. This method works just fine, and is not the source of the problem. The problem comes when I know what the expected return type is and I need to cast it so that I can use it with strong typing. In every case, casting the returned result works just fine, with the exception of movieclips placed on the stage at authortime. For example: var result:Object = evalAppendedPath( my_mc, some.nested.clip ); trace( result ); // _level0.my_mc.some.nested.clip trace( typeof( result )); // movieclip var mc:MovieClip = MovieClip( result ); trace( mc ); // null But if I load an external swf asset, evaluate its path, and cast it, the cast works and doesn't yield null. Short of changing all my internal class references to type Object instead of MovieClip (which could cause all sorts of problems trying to mesh with other code) or loading all my assets externally (which will cause load time issues) is there anything else I can do? In order to see anything with the debugger you usually need to set a breakpoint somewhere in the code. Right-click in the left margin of the editor and choose toggle breakpoint. Make sure it's inside a script block and on a line that has some executable code on it. Once you've done that, hit the debug button. Re: [Flashcoders] AS3.0 only projects + flex framework
You should be able to use the Flex framework without requiring any MXML. It might take a bit of detective work, but since all MXML files get turned into ActionScript files prior to being compiled it should definitely be possible. You'll probably get a lot of value out of using mxml.exe at the command line: mxmlc.exe -keep ./Hello.mxml That should cause it to keep the generated .as files when it compiles a .mxml file. By a process of elimination you should be able to figure out what you need to add to your .as projects to get them to work. This should work though, assuming you have a file called test.xml in the same folder as the XMLTest.as: XMLTest.as package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.events.Event; import flash.net.URLRequest; import flash.net.URLLoader; import flash.util.trace; public class XMLTest extends Sprite { var myXML:XML = new XML(); var XML_URL:String = test.xml; var myXMLURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(XML_URL); var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(myXMLURL); public function XMLTest() { myLoader.addEventListener(complete, xmlLoaded); } public function xmlLoaded(evtObj:Event) { myXML = XML(myLoader.data); trace(Data loaded.); } } } Spike On 10/24/05, Bevan Christians [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i have an arb question just on the side about a/s3 dont mean to hijack the thread but i'm kinda new i have this code (saw it under examples in the manual) code public function xmlLoader() { var myXML:XML = new XML(); var XML_URL:String = http://localhost/flextest/data.xml;; var myXMLURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(XML_URL); var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(myXMLURL); myLoader.addEventListener(complete, xmlLoaded); private function xmlLoaded(evtObj:Event) { myXML = XML(myLoader.data); trace(Data loaded.); } } /code but on debug running i get the following error: TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter 'listener' must be non-null. can anyone point me in the direction i should look no spoonfeeding required :/ ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders -- Stephen Milligan Do you do the Badger? http://www.yellowbadger.com Do you cfeclipse? http://www.cfeclipse.org ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders

[Flashcoders] Flash Player 8 and CD based content (that needs javascript!)
OK - quick version of the problem is that my company has lots of learning content made up of flash in html. Often this is delivered as standalone CD's rather than via an LMS. All the flash is authored in Flash MX, and depends on javascript - for navigation and settings flags in the movies and so forth. Any customer who now upgrades to F8 finds it no longer works - any javascript is not called. The only option I can think of is sending every person to the settings manager at the Macromedia website - and that really isn't a good option. Most don't have full internet access (which is why they got the CD version!) - and in any case, these people very often do not like to (or are unable to) work out the settings manager - plus they get worried about why they should need to. Even Macromedia's website admit many customers may not feel like using the settings manager! Can someone please help me out here - how can we get these CD's working? Or more to the point - the javascript working?? I can't really understand why the security is this strict, but as it is - there must be a way to allow local content to call javascript? And even if (God forbid) there isn't an easy way for the existing CD's out there - is there any file/policy file/anything that will mean those made from now on will work? We have literally thousands of courses that need to go on CD's and have access to javascript - it is pretty critical for our company! This is such a common use of flash that I can't believe there isn't an easy answer to this - please someone tell me I'm right!! __ Yahoo!
