Did you already have a look at Flash Remoting: http://www.adobe.com/
devnet/flashremoting/java_jsp.html
You can buy it from Adobe or try this open source alternative: http://

I need to build som kind of serverside solution in jsp to connect
with Flash

(and sql on the serverside).
XML.sendAndLoad from Flash would be nice, but some other solution
may work better.

Anyone knows some good tutorials on this?

"Certainly from a developer perspective, Flashcomm seems to be dying."

@Hank - You really should back up an incendiary statement like that with more
proof than a flakey listserv.

I have been emailing with Dave Watts from Figleaf and apparently the mailman
database became corrupted and the entire list went down.

I have offered help from Adobe but I'm waiting to hear back.

In the interim, Stefan Richter has set up an alternate listserv here:

http://www.flashcomguru.com/flashmedialist/subscribe.cfm

(Info here: http://www.flashcomguru.com/index.cfm/2006/9/27/flashmedialist)

He has a few hundred people signed up already, and most of the Adobe folks who
were on chattyfig are signed up as well.

hope this helps - I'm eagerly awaiting the return of the chattyfig list as
well.

I don't see anything that make that app flex only.
All what i've seen could be as easily as flex done in swf 5, 6, 7 or 8.

Only the components make it flex only imo.

my cents.

I know that while you can use the tag in html text fields to
load images or symbols, that the image must be left- or right-aligned
with the text, and the text wraps around it. I have a need to have
small images *inline* with the text, however. I'm wondering if
anyone's worked out a hack to make this work (or at least appear to
work).

The first thing that comes to mind is to place some other character
where the image will go, search for it, figure out its position, and
then attach the image on top of it in the appropriate place. However
I'm not sure if it's possible to find the exact position of a
character in a TextField.

I recall seeing someone demo just that thing on a blog post
somewhere, but I haven't bookmarked it, and I think it was probably
AS3 anyway (this needs to run in FP8). Flash Paper Viewer is able to
highlight search results in this way, but I believe there's some very
Flash Paper specific things going on there (having worked on the
first version of it myself).

Any clues would be much appreciated.

thanks,
-josh

Steve,

My statement is not based on a flaky listserve, but the fact that no
one even seemed to notice for such a long time that is the indicator.
The fact that no one has mentioned anything about it here for a month
speaks for itself. There are other indicators of a slightly more
confidential nature that to me reflect this as well.

If flashcom had a thriving developer community then people would have
been screaming here for an alternative. They have not. With the
success of flash video, I am sure FMS is doing fine, but not with the
programming base.

Interestingly, a year or so ago, the flashcomm list was thriving, with
lots of questions and lots of activity. If you look at the activity on
the list, even before the list serve went down, days could go by with
no activity. Personally, I suspect the reason for this is the
elimination of a cheap entry level version. But what do I know. Well
what I do know is that FMS/FCS programming discussion has dried up.
That is a fact.

Regards
Hank

[Flashcoders] Font faces in text fields

2006-10-01 Thread Perdue, Blake
I am dynamically creating a text field and want to use 2 different
embedded font faces in the same text field. Is this possible?

I have created textfields to embed the 2 fonts, so they are accessible
to the textfields. This is the code I am using:

var fmt=new TextFormat();

fmt.font='Univers 67 CondensedBold';

fmt.size=26;

fmt.color=0xFF;

target['siteTitle'].txt.createTextField('titleTxt',target['siteTitle'].t
xt.getNextHighestDepth(),0,0,600,200);

with (target['siteTitle'].txt.titleTxt) {

html=true;

embedFonts=true;

selectable=false;

htmlText='BLAKEPERDUESOFTWARE';

}

target['siteTitle'].txt.titleTxt.setTextFormat(fmt);

As you can see, I want one dynamic text field to hold two font faces
(Univers 67 CondensedBold and Univers 57 Condensed). Is this possible?
Thanks!

I figured it out -- yes, you can use different font faces in the same
dynamic text field. Here's how:

- make sure the fonts are embedded
- create the dynamic text field, but DO NOT set the font face or color
using TextFormat
- instead, use HTML tags to set the font face and color, such as:
textField.htmlText='BLAKEPERDUEPHOTOGRAPHY'

That's it.

[Flashcoders] Actionscript and version control

2006-10-01 Thread chris daubney

Hi,
Anyone using Subclipse to manage a Subversion repository and who may
provide some guidance? I have Eclipse/MATSC/ASDT which I use alongside
the Flash IDE for Actionscript 2 classes/package development, and have
recently decided to introduce Subclipse/Subversion to Eclipse to
maintain version control of all my classes (which until recently I had
kept on the local hard drive within one large directory structure which
mirrored the class packages).

I've digested as much as i quickly can from various sources (including
the online book 'Version Control with Subversion', Ben Collins-Sussman,
Brian W. Fitzpatrick, C. Michael Pilato) to grasp the concepts and
methodologies of version control. While attempting to assimilate this
into my Actionscript workflow:-
- Actionscript syntax checking' in the Eclipse IDE working copy no
longer works after I check out or update from Subversion repository
- Having trouble deciding on a structure for the repository. It would be
useful if I could checkout separate packages rather than the whole
repository and maintain cross referencing to other classes within my
code, which would avoid 'class not found' errors when syntax checking.

Any advice on other add-ons, tools or 'best practice' which I could
introduce into my workflow when working with version control for
Actionscript?

While running any .swf Flash file in your browser you can see all
the output

generated by the "trace" flash functions in this sidebar component.

[Flashcoders] static class function...sorta

2006-10-01 Thread grimmwerks

Ok - I've got this class -- it's really a sort of 'column text' class
for laying out nice stylized text -- the user can choose how many
columns there are onscreen.

Now I won't get into all the specifics, but there's a background color
that's being drawn based on how much text is in a column; and whatever
column has the longest text, then all x columns should draw their
backgrounds to meet that _bottom (height) amount, dig?

So I'm making the 'backHeight' variable static so it's shared among x
instances of the class, but I'd like when one class instance redraws
itself, all the instances redraw their backgrounds.

I have the function working with instances, but I can't make it static
as instance variables aren't allowed.

Should I either:

a) create a static function that calls instance functions (?)

b) have a static array that each instance adds itself too, and the
currently edited column instances calls each instance function based
on the array?

c) there's another better way I'm not getting?

Re: [Flashcoders] Actionscript and version control

2006-10-01 Thread Ray Chuan

Hi,
you might want to check out this thread:

http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/pipermail/flashcoders/2006-September/173375.html

To check out specific packages, eg. com.company.pkg,

/src>$ svn co http://repo/src/company/pkg/utils com/company/pkg/utils

Assuming that you already have this directory structure:

src
|-com
  |-company
 |-pkg

So, instead of checking out the packages in com.company.*, you just
check out com.company.pkg.

Hi,
Anyone using Subclipse to manage a Subversion repository and who may
provide some guidance?
