Right now I'm AS3 specialized and able to make it look nice w/ Photoshop
(ui design). I know a lot about SCORM/AICC also - I programmed my own
Flash LMS/APIs in AS2 a few years ago.

At points during my career I was pretty great with Director Lingo,
Javascript and AS1/2 - but don't use it and it goes away. I've been in
multimedia/web for 15 years now, so I've done a lot over the years.

My personal site has a decent representation of what I've done:
http://nudoru.com/

When I went to school (95-00) there really wasn't any multimedia
education beyond intro classes but I'd been teaching myself Photoshop
2.5/3 from a warez'd copy I got from a BBS. So I learned everything on
the job as I went and during long support calls with Macromedia as I
needed it (bonus to acually buying the software). The late 90's was
Joshua Davis/Praystation/Kioken/Dreamless/k10k envy so I did a ton of
experimentation and and learned from that. After that I went after the
hard projects at work and learned what I needed from books, sites and
peers to get it done.

Re: [Flashcoders] Job Openings at Bank of America for US/Canada

2010-06-21 Thread Matt Perkins

True, and Matt's pretty awesome. It is pretty hard to break in some

companies without the formal education, but if you're able to pick up
on-the-job experience like Matt has, you're golden.

So Matt, what would you say are your strengths? Are you purely AS3?

You can also learn as you go, but it's not as complete. I'm one of
Jason's coworkers - and while my instructional background isn't nearly
as good as Jason's I manage to muddle through :) My degree is in graphic
design/illustration and I've been self teaching Flash/multimedia since
'95. Been working in the corporate elearning industry since 2001 and
managed to pick up what I know by osmosis.

It's actually a large field. Most major universities have a degree in
"Instructional Technology" - or something named similar to that. It's
also called "Educational Technology", "Instructional Design", "Adult
Learning", "Educational Multimedia", "Information Design", etc. Job
titles can range from "e-learning developer", "instructional
technologist", "multimedia developer", "adult learning specialist",
"education consultant", "e-learning designer", "education developer",
"instructional multimedia designer", etc. Programs focus on a range of
topics from the technical multimedia aspects over to the learning theory
and instruction design aspects and you can usually focus in different
areas. Just depends. My title is "Instructional Technology Architect"
which is a senior type position compared to some others in my group,
called "Instructional Technology Designers". We also have
"Instructional Designers" who don't use the technology as much - they do
more working with subject matter experts and write the storyboards. My
Master's degree is in Instructional Technology from one of the top
instructional technology programs, Utah State University. I also have a
bachelor's in education with an emphasis in graphic design and
multimedia. Other top programs can be found at University of Indiana,
Penn State, and Georgia Tech (at least this is what the top schools were
back in the late 90's - may have changed since then). One of my

would be an unparalleled opportunity.

I've been really thinking about what's best to focus on for my skillset now,
given technologies are moving at light speed at present.

Thanks!

[Flashcoders] Job Openings at Bank of America for US/Canada and UK candidates

2010-06-11 Thread Merrill, Jason
Once again, we have some job openings on my team at Bank of America. We
have at least one job for a North American-based candidate and one or
more for positions in London, UK.

These are not entry level positions, nor do we seek intermediate level
candidates. We have one of the best internal e-learning organizations in
the industry and we have many instructional technology developers in our
larger team, but these positions are for the "special ops" team of
Instructional Technology Architects (senior-level positions) I am on. We
don't just do the simple page-turner WBTs all the time - we build
re-usable e-learning solutions, components, and systems. We are looking
for what we call "e-learning rock stars" - candidates with the following
REQUIRED skills and talents (if you don't have these, then you probably
shouldn't apply).

1. Advanced knowledge of Actionscript 3.0 - meaning, you are
comfortable writing all of your Actionscript in classes using
object-oriented methods. You can do things like create and dispatch
custom events, work with XML, create a code architecture, etc. You can
create rich e-learning experiences in Flash or Flex and have a portfolio
you can show that demonstrates this.
2. You have a good visual portfolio of work you have done. Meaning,
you consider yourself a good graphic interface designer, not just have a
mastery of Photoshop and Illustrator or Fireworks.
3. You have e-learning background and experience. An advanced
degree in a related field is preferred. You understand adult learning
theory and could switch into the role of an instructional designer if
you had to (not that you would in this position, you wouldn't, but there
is some collaboration with IDs where this helps immensely)

Those three skills are required. Other desired skills would be (not
necessarily required- obviously, we can't expect all of these, but some
would be nice):

1. Knowledge of the Adobe Flex framework
2. Knowledge of HTML/Javascript/AJAX
3. Knowledge of SCORM, LMS and LCMS systems
4. Knowledge of Lectora / Saba Publisher
5. Knowledge of Adobe's video and sound editing tools
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Sharepoint - especially if you know CAML
and using Sharepoint Lists and Webservices
7. Knowledge of utilizing Webservices
8. Knowledge of OOP design patterns
9. Knowledge of the other tools in Adobe's Creative Suite
10. Knowledge of micro architectures like Cairngorm and Pure MVC
11. Knowledge of third party Actionscript libraries like
Papervision3D or Away3D
12. Knowledge of 3D modeling tools like Blender or Swift3D

Of course, we would prefer candidates located in the Charlotte, NC area
where we are headquartered, but being remote is completely OK as well.
The London position(s) are located in London - no remote candidates for
those. This is a GREAT job working on a TALENTED team at a FATASTIC
Fortune 10 company.

Send me your resumes if you're interested!

[Flashcoders] [JOB] AS3 Developer Position in London

2010-01-15 Thread Piers Cowburn
Hi,

Hope nobody minds a job post, hopefully it'll help somebody out. The agency I
work at, Pushbutton ( http://www.pushbutton.tv ) is looking for an experienced
interactive developer to join us. We mainly work in the areas of interactive TV
and mobile development, but also do some desktop and browser based work. I've
been working here for a year, and it's a great place to work :) Details are as
follows:
You will be working on jobs for the likes of Virgin Media, BBC, Sky and
Microsoft, as well as our own exciting internal projects. The applications you
will be architecting and developing will shape the future of interactive TV
over the next few years.

Requirements

You are either a Javascript or AS3 developer with 2-4 years’ experience of
application development.
You have a keen interest (obsession would be better) in new technology, the
web, and interactive TV.
Whether or not you have experience of a specific framework, you understand the
principles of MVC and its benefits in application development.
You keep up to date with the latest developments in your chosen area
(Javascript or AS3), and can tell the difference between a fad and something
useful.
You won’t be required to produce any designs yourself, but a good eye for
design and a desire to get things pixel-perfect is a big plus.
You know what’s going on in the back end. An understanding of server
terminology and how it integrates with your applications is a must.
You have experience managing version control using Subversion or Git.
Above all, you’re easy to get along with, and have excellent written and verbal
communication skills.
Responsibilities

Interpret client/internal briefs into a logical and well planned app
architecture.
Interpret UI designs and advise on ease of implementation.
Develop your area of the application from start to finish.
Liase with other members of the team to make sure the finished application
works well as a whole.
Write basic documentation for your code to ensure other members of the team can
work with it in your absence.
Please reply off list to piers.cowb...@pushbutton.tv with some examples of
work. Salary based on experience, but competitive.

Cheers,
Piers___

HI Beau,My name's Matt Gitchell, I've been a Flash
developer for 14ish years. Most recently, my work at Second Story has
been featured in the Comm Arts Interactive Annual and my contributions
to the Library of Congress New Visitor experience helped that project
win HOW Magazine's Interactive Best in Show.
I hit all of your requirements comfortably, and would be looking toward the
maximum end of your salary scale.

I'd be interested in more details on this
job, my resume's attached. Sadly, my portfolio's woefully outdated as
I've been up to my eyeballs in work, but my most recent project
launch of any scale is http://125years.swissarmy.com. The Library of
Congress work can be found at myloc.gov in the "Knowledge Quest" section,
but registration is required.

Thanks for the time.

The Flash Developer will be responsible for developing Flash
applications that run on next-generation media tablets. These
applications will include casual games, utilities, media browsers,
information access services, as well as user interfaces.

You should have a very strong knowledge of Flash and ActionScript
programming, not just Flash animation or graphic design. You should also
be familiar with the Adobe CS3/CS4 development environment.

Video and audio streaming experience or Flash game development
experience is a plus. Graphical design skills and a working knowledge of
Adobe Photoshop are also helpful.

To be considered, please submit your resume and/or portfolio along with
your salary requirements to beau @ open-source-staffing.com

It's okay... at least it's not as bad as when the CEO of the startup I
worked at decided to reply-all to the entire company.
Telling his partner that we've run out of money, and needed to lay off half
of the company.

That was an interesting day.

2008-10-18 Thread Merrill, Jason
Yeah, I think you just have to go point by point and politely and
diplomatically explain why the project is being delayed, and give lots of
specific examples. When you are done, ask HIM, how we (meaning you and him)
can work towards the best solution. Always be respectful and polite - if you
explain your situation well, they should try and work with you to a compromise
solution. He should respect you even more if you do it right.

Hello All,

The messed up thing is the guy I work for is a nice guy; yet, the guy he
works for, is putting a great deal of pressure on him to deliver, and it
is being passed on to me. I am a little behind schedule, several days,
because of a few factors that I couldn't control, my hosting
company/testing server not allowing certain types of DB calls at first
because they thought I was some kind of hacker messing with a space that
hadn't been touched in a year(school), requests not being sent back
properly, my condo organization telling me to move in ASAP or be
fined(shouldn't be his concern; I know), and something I did (rely on
spry to work in IE7... yeah... right.. dumb move); yet, I believe that
considering I am taking a hit on this project and they know it, maybe
they might be willing to give me some leeway. I have also been
apologetic for issues that weren't my fault, so maybe he is starting to
believe that I am at fault for everything?

It is not my fault that my client didn't get the okay from is client to
develop until the end of last month, when that was supposed to be the
date it was done; yet, at the same time, I do understand the urgency on
both their ends, and I don't want to come off as an disinterested in
their plight.

How do I tell this guy and his client to appreciate my work and effort,
without pissing him off? I want to retain this guy as sales asset in an
SOA application strategy of mine, not to mention I think he is a cool
guy, but he really is pressuring me, and now he is not answering my
calls. What if I need him to test something remotely? A bit
unprofessional; yet, I understand it may be due to frustration. He has
also changed the language he uses when e-mailing me; such as, instead of
wrap this "one" up, he has started to correct himself and state wrap
this "on" up.

If you have any suggestions on how I may retain this client please
help. This project has made me realize that, although I have had
clients before, I really am newbie when it comes to working on my own
outside of teams, and I am not quite sure how to handle situations like
this.

Thanks,
Anthony

unprofessional; yet, I understand it may be due to frustration. He has
also changed the language he uses when e-mailing me; such as, instead of
wrap this "one" up, he has started to correct himself and state wrap
this "on" up.

If you have any suggestions on how I may retain this client please
help. This project has made me realize that, although I have had
clients before, I really am newbie when it comes to working on my own
outside of teams, and I am not quite sure how to handle situations like
this.

Thanks,
Anthony

Anthony Pace wrote:

Hello to the people that responded, especially Glen Pike,

Thanks for the responses; yet, this project is actually ajax (or AJAJ,
a redundancy I know, considering I am really using Script source
renewal) not flash, and I know how, actually I am very well versed, in
loading data from external sources of any protocol with flash if in
the same domain and sandbox; yet, I am kind of trying to make xss my
friend here; as well, I am also pretty well versed in using XSS
exploits on pages too, in case anyone needs a quick pen test of their
forums and user submission forms for $80.00 to $100.00 bucks, and for
an additional $100.00 I will help you fix it. (sorry for the plug)

I know, I know, evil ajax taking over the flashcoders list; yet, I
figured you guys would know of ways to bypass the CDP (cross domain
policy) nonsense, and thus help me with my concern as well. I just
wanted to know if there were better ways to do this, and if it had
been done better a thousand times before I attempted it using my xss
hackish way.

Regarding the JOB... I totally took a hit in my opinion, and I am glad
to have it confirmed. I am the eternal student trying to save dollars
to go back to school, and that is why I offered my services at a lower
rate.

Actually right now, I am okay with the system I have, as it returns
data very well, and below I have outlined how it works with flash too,
and has, after about 15 min of testing, allowed me to bypass the whole
CDP nonsense. Feelings on CDP... if I am a hacker and I want your
data, then I am not going to use the browser or flash to get it, I am
going to use all kinds of leach programs available; therefore, I ask
why make it difficult for honest developers?

  1. *flash*

 calls js function reloadScript(id,srcURL)

  2. *js*

 reloads script id="toBeReloaded" innerHTML content

  3. *script id="toBeReloaded"*

after innerHTML is updated, (php loops to create a JS
array)unlimited amount of call back functions occur; one of
which being loaded(option); yet, if you listen to the DOM,
callback is not required and the content returned can be
 anything... annnthnnngflushed binary
MP3,IMG,SOUND,VIDEO, STREAMING data... wink wink ;o)

  4. *loaded(option)*

if(option==1){call flash function to update data table with a
 new array being passed}

I also figured out how to make this load sound and video data from any
source, bypassing CDP BS, and have as3 import that data as it flushes
in, and use it as display content; after this project is over, I am
going to have fun hacking with this.

For now back to this god awful project; which, wouldn't be so god
awful if the client of my client wasn't being so up tight abo

[Flashcoders] [JOB] Flash coder needed ASAP -- AS2

2007-07-26 Thread g . wygonik
Hey all

The company i work for is looking for an Actionscript person to work with me
(and a couple server peeps and designers).

We're a social-network development company with 97% of new projects being
100% Flash front ends. Our projects are mostly for network television
properties, and based around user-generated content (think MySpace meets
YouTube meets Food Network -- but all in Flash).

What we need is someone who can jump in, get up to speed in a matter of
hours and use existing FLAs, code, and components and build sites based on
new specs. Design skills are really helpful in seeing designer mock-ups come
to life and keeping things looking good, but an all out animator/illustrator
is NOT what we need.

Where: your living room -- which is hopefully somewhere in the US, because
we can't deal with timezone differences real well. (Or, we do have offices
in NYC and LA)
When: NOW!! Full-time commitment, please.
Pay: negotiable (not my part to deal with)

You: AS2 master, have built some RIA's, some games, some tools, etc.,
knowledge of building and using components, class-based coding, can work
under super-tight-need-it-yesterday deadlines where specs change two or
three times in the course of an afternoon, data stuff like XML and JSON,
building re-usable widgets, can work with ugly "i just needed it to work"
code and not bitch all day about "proper" commenting style. Photoshop skill
is most delightful. Extra bonus for Yahoo Flash maps knowledge, 3D concepts,
Red5, and any of the various styles of throat singing.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might get to meet reality TV stars (the boss
is one). It's a decent gig. And you get to work with me! (joy, i know)

If you are interested, please email me OFF LIST (gwygonik @ gmail [dot] com)
with some links, code samples, general experience, etc., and we'll talk
about it.

Cheers
g.
