[Discussion]Great doubt in to use Flex you can help us

2005-02-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi to the whole community,
we are appraising a project of porting, or rather from a system of
back-end ibm os/400 we would like to develop an architecture j2ee with a
prestation layer in flex. We don't know very well the world macromedia
(Flash/Flex/ActionScript), except some demos to know the potentialities
of Flex.
Then ours great doubt is if we will go to use Swing (we have experience
in this scenario) or a new technology as Flex.
Have we understood that Flex as ui forms, is unbeatable as beauty and
simplicity but the problem that it rises us it is for example possible
to create etc an order client or an invoice???
We have seen that the back-end to call is very easy and thanks to the
protocol AMF the performances are good, but it are possible to manage
the classical events of a classical application, or rather we make an
example:
in a hypothetical forms/flex orders clients it is possible to manage
events type to stop a TextField until the consumer not click on the edit
button? Does Delete/Insert command type you/they should polish up the
whole forms?
To manage dynamic masks in base to the role of the consumer, without
having to write 1000 of forms? To manage the internazionalization? Sync
ui flex with j2ee db2/lock...?
To allow to a consumer that is found in the mask of the orders to be
able to pass to another mask without losing the values written in
precedence? In short according to you flex and mature for a complex and
true application?
To our notice it seems that for tender sync the back-end is
hard-working, but in a real scenery for applications of this type they
are characteristic least to implement; but according to You?
What we have asked both possible with Flex but the complexity?
Then concluding I think that Flex as graphic quality cannot be put in
discussion but as binding with the back-end we are a little worried
and we ask help, please, to Your experience.
If you can give there some suggestions on some point, or you have some
links to also examine of the of code, there would be any thankful.
We have also read the book of Flex but a lot of business logic
you/he/she is written in Action Script, but for us it will be everything
managed in j2ee.
Hoping in one great share of yours, and excusing us for our very bad
English, we wish you good job.

Steven Webster ha scritto:
Devis,
A very short answer to your question from me; to put this into perspective,
we are a J2EE consultancy that have spent far too much of our past adult
lives
worrying about IBM Mainframes, CICS Mainframes, Message Queues,
Transactional
Database development, legacy hardware integration, propagating security
credentials across application tiers (Web, Servlet, EJB Tier, etc) and all
the other enterprise-class problems you outlined.

Furthermore, we've also built thin-client (JSP and all manner of home-brew
variants before JSP 0.9 was even a twinkle in Sun's eyes) applications,
rich-client applications (from desktop apps built with Mainwin in Java,
to rich-client applets (yuk!) built with Java, to Swing/AWT applications
sitting atop mainframes and appservers, to Flash RIA and now to Flex). So,
I think in many ways, we've came to Flex with all the same fears, concerns,
problems, experiences, pains and hesitancies that you have right now.

For all the use-cases you outline in your post, then Flex absolutely cuts
the mustard -- there's nothing you have said you want to be able to
do, that I'd be concerned about doing. I'll caveat this however, by
saying you can build bad applications in Flex, just as easily as you
can build good applications in Flex. You're going to have to pay a
lot of attention to all the best-practices that you're already paying
to attention in the Swing/J2EE apps that you're building right now,
you're going to have to assume responsibility for technical
archticture, for software engineering, and for all the other age-old
disciplines that make the difference between a good piece of software
and a bad one. But ... and this is the sugar coated good news for
you; the choice to embrace Flex as a technology is not going to
impose limitation on you as I perceive you think it might, it's simply
going to empower you to do things better, all things being equal.

We're working with a good number of enterprise organisations like
your own who are fitting Flex into existing J2EE workflows and
developments, and the concerns you express, are the concerns that
I'd expect you to express - and the fact that you are expressing
them means I know you can be successful with Flex. Just as they
are doing some wonderful things with Flex, so I'm sure you can too.

Flex is a presentation server that has been built from the ground
up to be familiar to the workflow that a J2EE developer works with,
and to fit within existing J2EE infrastructure. Not just J2EE,
but there's a fair leaning in that direction right now. I don't
doubt for a second that it can fit within your infrastructure,
fit within your workflow and deliver on your expectations.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
See you on the dark side.
Best,
Steven

 While in the swing the iteration between the gui/enduser and
 the business logic it's consolidated in our team with
 Flex/ActionScript we find us lost, we hope both normal.

Have you looked at Cairngorm ? The prime motivation for
Cairngorm, was to allow us to bring our experience of working
with the Core J2EE Design Patterns (like many J2EE consultancies,
prior to Struts gaining wide adoption, we implemented our own
framework architecture upon the appropriate J2EE Patterns) to
RIA development.

I think if you can understand how to architect an application
with Cairngorm, you are going to very quickly learn how easy it
is to not only hook up a Flex UI to a J2EE backend, but how
*familiar* it is, using ServiceLocator, BusinessDelegate and
Value Objects/Data Transfer Objects.

You don't *need* Cairngorm to build well-architected Flex
applications - it would be arrogant to assume so - but if your
comfort zone is J2EE, then I think this is an essential
starting place to answer some of your questions.

You can download the 0.9 release here:

http://www.richinternetapps.com/archives/94.html

which includes a sample application that hits your J2EE application
(with a MySQL backend) and shows how to transfer data back and
forth between Flex and Java.

Sounds like you guys have J2EE best-practices coming out your
ears, so this is going to be a Eureka moment for you.

 In synthesis we have understood that flex him you are using
 with success, from what I see in the cases of study of your site.
 the only thing that we are still perplexed is whether to find
 material to be studied for seeing whether to give to a
 forms/Flex a similar interaction to a desktop apps, we wish
 build webapplication like dsktop apps, then to take the
 advantages of a desktop app and to insert them in a RIA/Flex/webapp.

We recommend our clients to identify a small piece of functionality
that is representative of a typical problem, and in going from end-to-end
through your enterprise application architecture tiers, touches all the
necessary systems.

So - if you were building a real-time trading dashboard for instance,
you may choose to pick some functionality that listens to a JMS topic,
and build a Flex UI that polls for changes to the topic, fetching data
when appropriate and plotting it in a simple bar-chart. I'd then
recommend that using a technical architecture (such as Cairngorm) to
see how you can build that single use-case of functionality. So,
rather than worry about the breadth of Flex, focus on driving a
spike through an end-to-end solution.

This voyage of discovery will allow you to answer yourself, many
of the questions you're asking here, I believe.

 According to you we can find some material or do we have to
 arm us of patience and does to find one solution of ours or a
 Flex design pattern exist???

Go and download the sample chapter at:

http://www.richinternetapps.com/archives/51.html

This is everything a J2EE developer needs to know about working
with Flex and Java together; this chapter first appeared at
www.theserverside.com

Take a look at the sample application with Cairngorm.

Hope this helps guide you,

Best,

Steven

RE: [flexcoders] Rotate Label???

2005-02-02 Thread Abdul Qabiz
In order to rotate a label, textinput or textarea, you need to embed the
font used in these components.

e.g.

mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml; width=425
height=400
mx:Style
@font-face { fontFamily:myfont;
src:url(file:///c:/windows/fonts/Arial.TTF); }

/mx:Style

mx:Label fontFamily=myfont id=out text=Result _rotation=90/

/mx:Application

This code embeds Arial.ttf in windows/fonts directory.

Look at following livedocs page for more details:

 If I'm right about your question then here's the solution.

 The datagrid has 4 columns. One of them has checkboxes in it.

 Datagrid = myData

 Column1 = select (with checkboxes)
 Column2 = name
 Column3 = age
 Column4 = city

 Var selectedData = new Array();

 For ( var i = 0; i  myData.length; i++ )
 {
 if ( myData.getItemAt(i).select )
 {
 selectedData.push( myData.getItemAt(i) );
 }
 }

 selectedData array will now hold all the items from the datagrid where the
 checkbox is selected. To get other columnvalues you can simply say:

 Name = selectedData[0].name;
 Age = selectedData[0].age;

 Please let me know if that's what you wanted.

 Well, many thanks to you for help me.
 I know about webservice and I have already realized an insert to datebase
 through Flex with simple textimputs or textareas, but my trouble is abouta
 checkrenderer. I must count records of a datagrid, see which of those
 records they are checked, and extract the value of a column of the above
 mentioned record. In .NET everything is very explicit, but in Flex I do not
 know that codes to use in the .as code of my .mxml file.
 I know that to count rows of a datagrid i can use rowCount, but for others
 two tasks I cannot which option use (rowIndex, i don't know)

 sorry for my poor english, and i hope you understand me.

  Miguel,

   Actually i´m learning to use Macromedia Flex and i´m working with
   a checkrenderer datagrid, but in this moment i have a trouble.

   I need to do a insert info a for(...) sentence, but i can´t find
   correct code for do that.

   This is code in .NET

  With .NET, it's quite common for the page-technology to embed SQL
  connection information. This isn't a failing of .NET as such (as
  there are good practices with ADO.NET and the Microsoft Enterprise
  Patterns that can be followed) but is a common 2-tier solution that we
  see people implementing, especially from an ASP.NET / VB.NET
  background.

  Flex does not offer explicit support for SQL; it is a presentation
  tier solution, that assumes that any business logic will be performed
  on the server-side of the wire. So - I would expect you to have some
  .NET code (VB.NET, C#, etc) that uses the ADO.NET libraries to perform
  any SQL queries that you wish to perform, and that this code reside on
  your server. You will then expose that business tier logic to Flex
  (currently) through a WebService interface - if you are using C# for
  instance, this is a very simple thing to do using metadata tags on the
  class that encapsulates your data access.

  Once you have defined a service on the server, Flex can then use the
  WebService tag to invoke that service; rather than build up a SQL
  query on the client (which is a *very* bad, though frustratingly
  common practice) you would instead pass the relevant data (such as
  tipo_mant_id) as an argument in a WebService call, such as
  agregaDetalleMantencionComputador(),
  and receive the results back from Flex.

  Once you have that n-tier architecture in place (Flex is a replacement
  for the presentation tier *only*) then how to invoke web services on
  the server, and how to handle the results that you get back, etc, will
  all be much clearer to you from the documentation and (shameless plug)
  books that are out there.

  So I'm afraid I'd be tempted to suggest that if you want to embrace
  Flex as a presentation-tier solution, abandon all hopes of 2-tier
  (database code from your integration tier intermingled with
  presentation tier code) architecture, and avoid a run-in with the
  best-practice police...

  Hope this helps,

  Best,

The datagrid has 4 columns. One of them has checkboxes in it.

Datagrid = myData

Column1 = select (with checkboxes)
Column2 = name
Column3 = age
Column4 = city

Var selectedData = new Array();

For ( var i = 0; i  myData.length; i++ ) {
if ( myData.getItemAt(i).select )
{
selectedData.push( myData.getItemAt(i) );
}
}

selectedData array will now hold all the items from the datagrid
   where the
checkbox is selected. To get other columnvalues you can simply
say:

Name = selectedData[0].name;
Age = selectedData[0].age;

Please let me know if that's what you wanted.

Thanks

Well, many thanks to you for help me.
I know about webservice and I have already realized an insert to

RE: [flexcoders] dynamic vbox icon

2005-02-02 Thread Benoit Hediard
It depends if you create your accordion segments dynamically (defined in
external files) or if your segments are already defined in the current mxml
file.

For dynamic segment creation, you would use something like this:

mx:Accordion id=someAccordion initialize=initAccordion() /

mx:Script
import mx.containers.VBox;

function initAccordion() {
someAccordion.createSegment(VBox, vBox1, Some label 1,
DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON1'));
someAccordion.createSegment(VBox, vBox2, Some label 2,
DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON2'))
}
/mx:Script

With static segment creation, you would use something like this:

mx:Accordion id=someAccordion initialize=initAccordion()
mx:VBox
!-- Define here the content of the first segment --
/mx:VBox
mx:VBox
!-- Define here the content of the second segment --
/mx:VBox
/mx:Accordion

mx:Script
import mx.containers.accordionclasses.AccordionHeader;

function initAccordion() {
var header:AccordionHeader;
header = (AccordionHeader) someAccordion.getHeaderAt(0);
header.label = Some label 1;
header.icon = DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON1');
header = (AccordionHeader) someAccordion.getHeaderAt(1);
header.label = Some label 2;
header.icon = DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON2');
}
/mx:Script

Good luck!

ok, cool,

the class works, at least, it returns the image I want, but where do I need
to call the methode?
mx:VBox initialize=DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON1');
doesn't has any result,
how does the class knows where (on which object) to link the icon to.

Thanks for your time!

To be able to get icons dynamically, you can create an DynamicAssetsManager
singleton class.
All the necessary icons must be embedded in it (so I don't know if it solves
your problem).

class DynamicAssetsManager {

[Embed(source=assets/images/someicon1.png)]
public var ICON1:String;
[Embed(source=assets/images/someicon2.png)]
public var ICON2:String;

private static var dynamicAssetsManager ;

public static function getInstance():DynamicAssetsManager {
if (dynamicAssetsManager == undefined) dynamicAssetsManager
= new DynamicAssetsManager();
return dynamicAssetsManager;
}

private function DynamicAssetsManager() {}

public function getSymbol(name:String):String {
if (this[name] == undefined) {
trace(DynamicAssetsManager.getSymbol :  + name +
is undefined);
return ;
} else {
return this[name];
}
}

}

Then, you can call this manager from anywhere (usually during view helpers
initialization) to get the icon dynamically :
DynamicAssetsManager.getInstance().getSymbol('ICON1');
...

Hope this helps!

Hi All,

I have a accordion pane with some vboxes as its children.
What I want to do is set the icons on these vboxes dynamically.
But as I understand from the docs, these icons can only be embedded?
So isn't there a way to set the icons dynamic?

Thanks for your time!

Question about error message

2005-02-02 Thread nostra72

 I am trying to figure out the preview part of the flex builder software and I am still running in to some bugs. What I have figured out how to do is to get the browser to turn on but when it turns on what I see is instead of the webpage I get a servlet error mesage. It is listing where the file is located on the page but not what I want on the page. Let me explain this further, I am trying to run a test of a simple "Hello World" application just to show that I can do the previewing right. I know Ihave created a testing site because it has not given me a message tio set it up. But what happens is when I select previewing it in the browser whichI use Netscape instead of a label with the words "Hello World" it shows a servlet error message listing the location of the file. Any tips? Also if am not being specific enough I apologize.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: how can I do this in Flex? -- (warning, best -practice police are in the hou

2005-02-02 Thread Mehdi, Agha
Miguel,

Compare function1 with the one you sent. Notice, that I have
dg.getItemAt(i) instead of dg.getItemAt(i+1) and you can get specific
value from the column by giving the column Name like dg.getItemAt(i).code

When you do dg.getItemAt(i), it returns you the entire row row for that
index. The row is an object containing all the columns you have in the
dataprovider of the datagrid.

===Function 1==
function envia_motivos_fuc(){
var Request:Object = new Object();
var selectedData:Array = new Array();
for(var i=0;idg.length;i++)  dg is datagrid´s name
{
if(dg.getItemAt(i).select)
{
Request.para = dg.getItemAt(i).code  here i´m specified a
parameter
servicio_datos_motivos.send(Request);  that´s webservice
}
}
}
=

One more thing that it'll work if you select only one checkbox in the grid
but if you're doing multiple selections from the checkbox then it'll create
problems since for every single selected checkbox, you're sending single
value to the webservice. It'll make a lot more sense if you populate an
array with all the selected items and send that array to the server.

function envia_motivos_fuc()
{
var Request:Object = new Object();
var selectedData:Array = new Array();
for(var i=0;idg.length;i++)  dg is datagrid´s name
{
if(dg.getItemAt(i).select)
{
selectedData.push( dg.getItemAt(i).code );
}
}
Request.para = selectedData  here i´m specified a parameter
servicio_datos_motivos.send(Request);  that´s webservice
}

This way you send any array with all the selected codes at once, which makes
it easier to manage. Let me know if you have any question.

mmm, i have a question now, how can i get only one column of a row i need to
send it how a parameter, but no all row, only a column

for example

|___select one___|___code___|___name___|
#9632; 101 name 1
#9632; 102 name 2
#9632; 103 name 3

supposing that I select the second row, I want to take code only, that is to
say, 102, and this value I want to send it as parameter through an aspx
file across a webservice (which is already done)

my another problem is I do not know if the function to extract the value is
realized well

that´s code:

function envia_motivos_fuc(){
var Request:Object = new Object();
var selectedData:Array = new Array();
for(var i=0;idg.length;i++)  dg is datagrid´s name
{
if(dg.getItemAt(i+1).select)
{
Request.para = dg.getItemAt(i).rowIndex(i+1)  here i´m
specified a parameter
servicio_datos_motivos.send(Request);  that´s webservice
}
}
}

thanks in advance for all help

How to hide/disable the divider bar?

2005-02-02 Thread Benoit Hediard

Hi,

Has anyone found a
way to hide/disable the divider barin a DividedBox?

I've tried to play
with verticalGap,dividerAffordance and dividerWidth without
success.
I don't want to use
the destroy children method, just to enable/disable the divider
bar.

The most logical way
I've found is to change the verticalGap value (set to 0 to hide the divider) but
it does not work dynamically, only when set in mxml.

When
changingthe verticalGap value during runtime, what method must calledto
redraw/resize the DividedBox?

Thank's for your link and your Cairngorm we are studying the code, only
one thing Steve, if you can you to point out away us the straight line

Today web build a simple registry customer with our j2ee and flex as

We have used amf protocol, it's great for us.
Considering that flex returns us an array of objects pojo, is it correct
to use an autoincrement (simple integer++ or integer--) client side, for
it flows the array? or is it a wrong practice about you?
Our var integer++/integer--, we use her/it to give the effect
Next/Prior/Last/First
However considering that all the TextFields are tied up to the model
which is in turn connected to the back end, when a consumer click new
customer it's correct to clean all the TextFields in this way name.text

other solution in this moment
