Maybe you need a chrome less window, and implement your own exit / minimise (
etc ) handlers ?

Re: [flexcoders] How to display a LARGE dataset of images

2010-08-06 Thread Karim Beyrouti
how about an image pool - so you cache a number of images - better if you have
thumbnails available to load otherwise, i would recommend resizing the bitmap
data ...

2 at once is a lot - if it's a list type thing you want, I found Spark
lists with a custom item-renderer worked well with pools of images - especially
as the spark list uses pools of object for it's list items - so you wont have
to load all that at once.. your app should load the images as required... it's
what i used for the AIR app @ http://gedit.kurst.co.uk/ - but - well,
definitely not tested for so many images.

MXML List I used :

s:List
id=imageList
itemRenderer=com.kurst.galleryEditor.skins.DataListItemRenderer
dataProvider={galleryData.imageCollection}
creationComplete={dataController.imageList = imageList}
left=10
right=0
top=0
bottom=0

dragEnabled=true
dropEnabled=true
dragMoveEnabled=true

borderVisible=false borderAlpha=0.0 contentBackgroundAlpha=0.0

!-- ++ --
!-- DATA - IMAGE LIST LAYOUT--
!-- ++ --

s:layout
s:TileLayout columnWidth=130 rowHeight=130
horizontalGap=10 verticalGap=10 /
/s:layout

/s:List

Item Renderer:

http://kurst.co.uk/transfer/DataListItemRenderer.mxml

And object pool:

http://kurst.co.uk/transfer/DataListItemController.as

won't compile but might give you and idea, the only thing i did not build into
the pool was a size limit.
code is is not commented ( sorry ), but might help... and not tested for 2
images... but that should be the concept.

good luck

 load next image, draw again and so on... However it will work, I would
 imagine that it will take some time to load all the images... I still don't
 understand why would anyone want to view so many images simultaneously... Can
 you maybe convince the customer that seeing 2 images at once isn't the

Re: [flexcoders] Out of curiosity, what would Adobe lose if Flash were open sourced?

2010-05-03 Thread Karim Beyrouti
I think ( just a guess ) - they want to avoid different implementations of the
flash player - with different players supporting different features... that
could cause problems ( sounds like a headache to me ) ... however - if they can
avoid that - it could then also be a question of revenue. i think an open
source player - controlled by 'adobe' could be a great thing.

Also, one thing i have been wondering about lately, and can't think of an
answer... Director shockwave was quite fast and had ok 3D ( a little out of
date now ). Used to really like director...

why can't do the same with the flash player today... i know historically they
want to keep distributable file size low - and reach the lowest common
denominator - however - i just wonder why is this not achievable now days...

[flexcoders] reseting s:List and all list items...

2010-04-25 Thread Karim Beyrouti
Hi List,

quick question:

I am trying to iterate through a spark List component's itemRenderers / list
items and would like to call a function in the ItemRenderers. How would i
approach this?

basically i need to reset a list and remove all active items ( and run a
clean up function in each list item )...

more info (in case you have time):

I am using the s:list component for a thumbnail gallery (air app) and am not
too sure about my approach to using itemRenders for this.

I dynamically generate the thumbnails from larger images - if i do this every
time there is a 'dataChange' event - then the list constantly rebuild the
images ( i guess the spark list component uses a pool of list items ).

The ItemRenderer's thumbnail bitmap is dynamically resized and resampled from a
larger JPG. This is then assigned to a 'mx:Image' component.

When re-assigning new Data - i would like to clean / clear all bitmaps in the
list - to keep a low memory footprint. Hense why i am trying to iterate through
the items in the list to clean / clear the bitmaps. is this the best approach?

If you've made it this far, and feel somewhat inclined to help, here is the
code i am using for my item renderer:

http://kurst.co.uk/transfer/ListItemRenderer.txt

Many thanks

own pool...and had already started - so far it works a treat. It's good to know
i was not going mad with late night coding.

Also removed the mx:image... as it's a bit of an overkill for what a sprite can
do
thanks again - very appreciated

 A quick answer:
 You can use itemRendererFunction to create item renderers (in which case you
 will not be able to use virtual layout), but if you do the pool on your own,
 that might not be the worst approach.
 You can also let the renderers register themselves upon creation in some sort
 of array in the parentDocument - not the best approach regarding
 encapsulation, but would also work.

 If you care about performance I would't use Image component, it is huge
 comparing to Bitmap.
 I did something similar by doing this:
 - created an image loader class that would also take care of caching and
 reusing the images.
 - let every item renderer call that manager to acquire the image it should
 display.
 The manager than had a certain limit for how many images it may store + TTL
 concept, that is the images loaded first, in case there are to many images
 requested would be also unloaded first to give space to the new ones. So that
 it was sort of a compromise between the loading speed and the memory usage.

 Best.

[flexcoders] Accordion - Opaque / transparent background

2010-04-09 Thread Karim Beyrouti
Hi All.

I have been trying to make the accordion's background opaque / transparent. So
it's see through.
The 'backgroundAlpha' property does not work.

Wondering if anyone has any tips here?

Using Flash Builder 4, project is an AIR application using 'Wireframe' theme.

Code:

mx:Accordion
backgroundAlpha=0.0
width=200 right=0 top=0 bottom=0
creationComplete=initAc()
id=testAc

s:NavigatorContent label=Accordion Pane 1 width=100% height=100%
backgroundAlpha=.25
/s:NavigatorContent

/mx:Accordion

Regards
