You are right, I am sorry. I've been under a lot of stress. I had
committed myself to a project utilizing papervision that also depends
on code that has yet to be realized in any adequate form and
unfortunately is beyond the scope of the project yet I need it to get
it done. Little things set me off and my true self comes out when it
shouldn't (I am in fact evil). And since I have not given or received
anything of value from this group in a while, emphasis on given. I'm
going to pull out for a while. It's a distraction that you don't need.

Did you read the thread... I had backups. It's a bug. When you
import any other project into eclipse or Flex builder it doesn't
delete files from your project as part of the import. The reason I
bring it up isn't because I'm a baby, it's because I have a legitimate
concern. Does this behavior happen if I import a project into my
workspace that was created with the same version? I don't think just

an application shouldn't be deleting files without telling you. If
you have nothing to offer the conversation then shut up!

Re: [flexcoders] Cannot embed Flash9 symbols

2008-02-19 Thread Paul Decoursey
What is bothering me more is this... I have reinstalled Flash CS3,
reinstalled Flex 2 and all the hotfixes, reinstalled the Flex
Component Kit and followed the directions for it 10 times now and it
does not work. I cannot load any of the components that Flash is
outputting. I'm getting very frustrated and I have no other ideas of
what might be happening. I've also tried it in Flex 3 to no avail,
which is leading me to believe that the issue is int he swfs and swcs
that Flash is generating.

Does anyone have any clue? I've wasted a day on this, and I can't in
good conscious bill my client for this time.

Re: [flexcoders] Web Service & Enumerations...Is this a bug?...need help!

2007-11-30 Thread Paul Decoursey

Have you tried Hotfix 3? That had a lot of updates to web service code.

I did notice a lot of odd things similar to what was described when I
updated to hotfix 3(I didn't install hotfix 2 until that time). Most
of the issues were due to Flex actually handling the SOAP calls as
they should be verses the close enough hack way they were before.

Re: [flexcoders] Thumb Nail and Indexing

I'd suggest something like FFMpeg or TeleStream FlipFactory for the
video files. For the SWF and FLV you can load back into the Flex app
and generate thumbnails that way.

I've used subclise and I really don't care for it. I have not tried

I can't say anything about the Mac, but I always use the Subversive
Plugin for Eclipse:

http://www.polarion.org/index.php?page=overview&project=subversive

It seems to be less buggy than the alternative Subclipse plugin. Also
it became an official Eclipse project, so in the future it might be
part of the core platform like the CVS plugin.

I'm using Subversive with HTTP and with svn+ssh and did not have any
issues yet.

Using the Flex Component Kit and Flash CS3 you can do what you're
looking for. I just wrote a tutorial about using the FCK to create a
"stateful" skin with transitions. You can read it here :

The tutorial describes how to make a basic transition, but you could
easily elaborate on it to do what you're looking for.

Re: [flexcoders] PDF rendering in Flex

2007-11-06 Thread Paul Decoursey
I think that is probably your best bet at this point. It is possible
to read a PDF in flex, but rendering it is a bit tricky. First if
it's compressed you'll have to unzip parts of it. Once you have it
decoded you could execute the drawing commands on a UIComponent and
display the text roughly the same, but I'm not sure about images. If
they are JPEG I suppose you could feed it to a SWFLoader, but if it's
Tiff, I don't think you can do that. But if you know that the PDF is
not going to have images or just simple images and you keep them
simple then I think it could be possible to build the component to
display it.

Re: [flexcoders] WITH construction ?

2007-11-06 Thread Paul Decoursey
You just illustrated why it's reducing readability. You have to read
a lot more code to understand what is happening in the with
statement. In your example you show x = 20, but where is x? is it
on the object or is it in the function scope or is it in the parent
object scope?

This is why I think with should not be used. In javascript it
improved performance slightly in some unique cases, but I don't think
it's helpful in AS3. The only benefit I see for it is reduced
typing, but that's just lazy in my opinion. Please type it out, it
will help you out in the long run. I think the only time you should
not state the scope of an assignment like that (ie x=20) is when the
scope is local like in a function. Please use this whenever possible
as well, even when you are the only one looking at your code.

Oh and just because other languages have it does not make it a good
idea. Lingo uses && for string concatenation, is that a good idea?

Paul,

apologies however languages such as C# include such a directive
already - its not "reducing" readability at all - in reality I'm
wondering if this is remotely possible in Flex. The issue I'm
wondering about is that if you wrote the code below

var object:Object = new Object();

With (object) {
x = 20;
trace("trap the app in debug here");
}

and placed a breakpoint on the trace line - you'll note several
things - 1) 'x' is defined as a variable of type Number (no var
declaration which I didn't think possible) and outside of the scope
of 'object' 2) object does not have a variable 'x'.

How is it shown that 'x' is part of 'object' rather than an
external variable ?

In C#, the With statement is enacted in that properties of a object
declared in the With construct are referenced in the following manner.

With (object) {
.x = 20;
}

Note the '.' !

Re: [flexcoders] Wrapper .svn copies BUG!

2007-11-02 Thread Paul Decoursey
Totally unrelated. But good guess. The .svn folder from the html-
template is what is being copied. The only way I can see to stop it
is to turn off generating the HTML template, but I need the template
to be generated, I have support javascripts in it.

Re: [flexcoders] Wrapper .svn copies BUG!

2007-11-02 Thread Paul Decoursey
My FB rejected 1.0.x. I do have it installed on my Mac version and I
find that it kind of sucks, but it's not entirely their fault. I
cannot use it for the most part because it seems to do everything
based on the root repository and I don't have access to that. I only
have access to certain projects in the repository (I'm a consultant
and they don't trust me). As a result I find subclipse to be kind of
useless, plus it doesn't solve my problem. Part of it also is that I
have gotten so used to TortiseSVN that I find the alternatives to be
quite lacking. There is nothing worthwhile on the Mac for SVN, I've
resorted to the terminal in fact.

Subclipse doesn't work with Flex Builder, and I wouldn't use
Eclipse for anything else. I'll check it out though. I do think all
these suggestions are nice, but they all just ignore the real
problem, there is an issue with FlexBuilder and it should be

I blogged about something like that at one point, http://
www.devilsworkbook.com/workbookroot/2007/03/clock-digital-in-nature-
in-fle.html

This shows the current time however. But I do have one that counts
down from a set time and fires a timed out event when it gets to
zero. But that one resets when the user does something, I use it for
session management. That one listens for the System Idle event to
update it's time. I think the example I blogged about would be more
relevant.  Hope it helps.

Re: [flexcoders] Date oddities *** SOLVED ***

2007-10-30 Thread Paul Decoursey
Now it makes sense, because our back end, also in java, sends all
timestamps in UTC.

On Oct 30, 2007, at 7:34 PM, Scott Melby wrote:

Whew, took me a while but I was able to get to the bottom of this
date stuff. The problem I was seeing was caused by my Java back
end not correctly recognizing the time zone information from
VISTA. This caused it to return timestamps in milliseconds GMT
(instead of the usual adjusted for local time). A simple upgrade
of the JDK (was running 1.5_09, upgraded to 1.5_13) fixed that
issue. So, it turns out that if your back end is returning time in
GMT (also referred to as UTC) then your flex code will always need
to adjust accordingly (as indicated by Paul below). If you are
fine with your server returning local time (intranet app, etc) then
no adjustment is necessary in the Flex code.

Thanks

Thanks for the response.

Maybe your XP builds were resulting in dates that had
timezoneOffset = 0. If this is the case, the adjustment would
have no effect and you would not notice that you didn't need it.
If that is not the case, then I am really confused.

Thanks again

that it would have to be dependent on the client offset in all cases.

Thanks for the response.

Maybe your XP builds were resulting in dates that had
timezoneOffset = 0. If this is the case, the adjustment would have
no effect and you would not notice that you didn't need it. If
that is not the case, then I am really confused.

Thanks again

Re: [flexcoders] MXML vs. pure ActionScript

I like both. For some things, like components I prefer AS only. But
for larger apps I prefer mxml simply because I can visualize the app
better. I don't think that there is any one better way to do it, it
depends on your strengths and your needs.

Re: [flexcoders] application not expanding to fit content

100% height in html rarely works. the height of the div is the
problem. It has been my experience the it will not expand to what it
could. I have seen some workarounds out there where if you set the
body to 100% height and all parent tags also to a height then it
works, but I have now be successful with that. I have usually
resorted to javascript setting the height after it's loaded.

Re: [flexcoders] Getting Debugger window when running flex application

2007-10-28 Thread Paul Decoursey
I think that this is because the beta player installs to a different
file than the official release. I think that flex is checking for
the official release and doesn't find it. I don't think there is a
way to turn off this warning, at least I haven't found one. I've
reverted back to the official release anyway, I didn't want to
develop against something that we didn't know when it would be released.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: How to set "Script time limit" in Flex 2 (or 3)?

2007-10-28 Thread Paul Decoursey
I had thought that too, but think about it, if you have a script that
runs for a minute users are not going to be happy. You need to break
that up into smaller parts so that the UI can update and the user
doesn't think it's broken. In fact I like the default of 15 seconds,
it helps me to regulate myself so I don't have long periods of
"what's going on?"...

Re: [flexcoders] crossdomain.xml... real or not-so-real security?

2007-10-26 Thread Paul Decoursey
The use case I've heard that makes sense to me that does provide
security is this.

Say you have a bunch of FLVs stored on your server and you let some
people access those from their site. And at some point you discover
that someone has been abusing that privilege and racking up huge
bandwidth charges for you. So you add the cross domain and deny
access to certain sites. Then you can still stream them out, but the
"friend" that posted it to slashdot is no longer able to. Make
sense? It's not a lot of security in my opinion, but it works.
There are ways around it, like proxies, but then those people will be
using the bandwidth themselves as well.

I think the point to the 100+ emails is you can quickly scan the
subjects for what might be of interest. And if you have threading
enabled in your mail client then it's much easier to follow up on
threads that are of interest to you. I tried digest for a while and on
a list with this much traffic it's too difficult to keep up with things
that way. The messages took a long time to download and took too long
for me to scan for relevant info. But back on the off topic, it doesn't
bother me a lot if now and then there is stuff that should have been
trimmed, but those extreme examples seem to be occurring more an more.
it takes but a moment to edit your message, let's all join together in
harmony to accomplish the goal of lessening the bandwidth required to
run this list. let's save some trees, I mean bandwidth.

Those "layers" were a big stumbling block for me, but once I understood
it I don't have any problems with it. I also agree that better examples

Do you know if there are any plans in the future of the language to add
overloading? What about meta-data, could there be a tag you could add to
those calls that would instruct the compiler to do a type check other

Re: [flexcoders] Flex app security on IIS

2007-10-17 Thread Paul deCoursey
This is a bug that I have reported before. The upload request does not
share the session with the other requests on the system. ie, cookies
are not sent that have not been set by any other upload requests. In
some cases I've been able to use URL-Rewriting to share the session, but
it's a pain. My solution has been to allow unsecured uploads by
supplying a token to the request. What I do it have another request
that is on the authenticated session request a token, we use a UUID
generated by the server. We pass that in as a parameter on the upload
request and that server side handler will then map that request to the
correct session. We use tokens because we can expire them after a
single use. We had trouble with url-rewriting because by default all
the servers we were deploying on did not have that enabled by default
and some clients just didn't want to support that.

Really url-rewriting for session management should do it for you.

Re: [flexcoders] not kosher to call function from inline renderer?

2007-10-17 Thread Paul deCoursey
Yes, in this case ClipTile is a Container, most of my itemRenderers are
Containers. If they are not containers then I generally don't have
anything to set on them.

Ok, I always use parentDocument and it always works for me... what's the
deal? I've never used outerDocument. Here is a quick sample:

Can you explain why mine works but his does not?

The inline component doesn't have that method in scope. Try
{this.parentDocument.blobToImage

Re: [flexcoders] Detecting optional elements in XML

2007-10-07 Thread Paul deCoursey
Use e4x, most e4x expressions return an XMLList. Then check if the
result has a length greater than 0. Some of the alternatives are
actually more work computationally, as they do the test for existence
and then run the query later if it exists. Here is an example of where
I use it.

var previewsElement:XMLList = xml.previews;
if(previewsElement.length()>0) {
//do stuff here
}

In some cases I just get the list and iterate over it, then if the list
is empty it just moves on.

You don't have another class or var with the name includeBase that might
be conflicting? That's the kind of thing that has tripped me up in the
past. In the debugger can you verify the value of includeBase?

 My actual code is:

 function filter(includeBase:Boolean) : void
 {
 if ( includeBase )
 {
 // Do a whole lot of stuff here.
 // Including updating bound variables, etc.
 }
 // After if do the rest of my merge process.

 So, my function has several things it will be doing inside of the

 portion of the if statement, and then whether or not it was true or
 false, continue with other processes. After creating my "crazy" test
 function I then came back and modified my function to:
 function filter(includeBase:Boolean) : void
 {
 if ( includeBase )
 {
 // Do a whole lot of stuff here.
 // Including updating bound variables, etc.
 }
 else
 {
 // HACK FOR AN APPARENT BUG!
 // Not sure why, but this if statement will always resolve to
 true unless there is an else.
 var whoKnowsWhy : String;
 }
 // After if do the rest of my merge process.
 }

 Once I did this, my code works great. includeBase of true and it

 false block.

Re: [flexcoders] e4x question

2007-09-26 Thread Paul deCoursey
Alright, I've read the specs, it's not a bug but in fact it's by
design... a design choice that I would not have made. The deal is if
the namespace is not specified then for elements it matches on the
default namespace, but for attributes it matches on no namespace...
makes not sense to me. What also doesn't make sense is that attributes
don't have a namespace unless declared per attribute. They do not
inherit from the element, which is what XML Schema defines, but since
Schema really doesn't come into play here this can be expected.

It's all totally bizzare.

Re: [flexcoders] e4x question

2007-09-26 Thread Paul deCoursey
I have been getting caught up with with one for a few weeks now, I keep
forgetting to specify the namespace. I actually think this is a bug,
but I haven't checked the Ecma requirements yet. In XPATH and the like
if you don't specify a namespace in the query it will return all
elements regardless of namespace. This only seems to be an issue in the
ecma world, and it seems wrong to me. I suppose it could be argued that
this helps us be better programmers and specifying namespaces is better
in the long run. But in the example that you guys were working with it
was the xml namespace, that should just be handled... just my opinion,
but a lot of time was wasted on this and in my opinion it's a bug,
possibly a language level "bug".

I'm guessing that XSLT for AS3 isn't going to come anytime soon. You

Re: [flexcoders] SOAP Service Issue, kind of a big bug

2007-09-17 Thread Paul deCoursey
Alright, I've figured it out. I was trying the property value to
represent the text content of the element, but flex looks for the name
of the element as the text content. Not exactly intuitive, but
reasonable. Some other issues have arisen however. I have a response
that looks like this:

And the profile Element is unbounded, and there can be none at all. I've
noticed that if there are several, like 2-7 (I have not tried more) then
the response objects that flex decodes look fine. But if there is one,
then I get an array for the only element is null, where is the Object?
Any ideas?

[flexcoders] SOAP Service Issue, kind of a big bug

2007-09-17 Thread Paul deCoursey
Ok I have this WSDL:

http://examples.decoursey.com";
xmlns:soapenc12="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-encoding";
xmlns:tns="http://examples.decoursey.com";
xmlns:wsdl="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/";
xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema";
xmlns:soap11="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/";
xmlns:wsdlsoap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/";
xmlns:soapenc11="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/";
xmlns:soap12="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope";>

http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema";
xmlns:tns="http://examples.decoursey.com";
elementFormDefault="qualified"
targetNamespace="http://examples.decoursey.com";>

http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/http"/>

  http://localhost:8084/Webular/metadata/SimpleSoapExample"/>

When I try to create the metas object with the metadata objects this is
the response Flex is generating:

http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/";
   xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema";
   xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance";>

  http://examples.decoursey.com";>

All of the "" should just a a simple
string, not and element and certainly not a nil element. Anybody have
any ideas?

Paul

[flexcoders] Re: WebService problem

2007-09-14 Thread Paul DeCoursey
I have an update on this. There is no problem with extending string
unless there are more than one of the same element, I'm not sure if
it's the unbounded max that causes it. I think that the hotfix 3 had
something in it about this. I will have to explore that option.

Re: [flexcoders] Does Adobe have plans for OplenGL Primitives or not?

2007-09-07 Thread Paul deCoursey
That would be cool, but I can't see that happening. I'd imagine that
adding any OpenGL support would add a significant amount of bloat to the
player. I think that it has become fairly universal, I don't see why
they couldn't make a go for it. but then there is always
papervision, and the Flash renderer is fairly fast.

[flexcoders] WebService problem

2007-09-05 Thread Paul deCoursey
I have this issue when calling a WebService operation. If I have in the
schema an object that extends string the operation will fail and crash
teh browser. The idea is to send an object like this (represented in xml):

This is the title
...

If I send the object with everything except the metadata it works fine.
If I add the metadata it fails. This works from other clients without
any issues. I have tried the flex hotfix 3, but that has other issues,
it fails to load imported schema references correctly. Has anyone had
experience with something like this?

I am working on building a simple example that I can post that includes
the WSDL, the flex client that fails and a java war that provides the
soap service. Once I have that done I will post it, but I'd like to
know before hand if anyone has experienced this. Or if there is anyone
that has a complexType that extends string but does not fail, I'd be
interested in comparing notes there as well.

Thanks

Paul

Re: [flexcoders] its possible convert (not split) String to Array ?

2007-08-31 Thread Paul deCoursey
JSON, what you need is a JSON parser. I believe there is one on google
code...

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Want to export data to and Excel File

2007-08-30 Thread Paul deCoursey
That will not work, unless you are using AIR. A file can't originate in
the SWF, it has to come from a server. You can create the file in the
SWF and spool it to a server and back to the client.

Re: [flexcoders] Want to export data to and Excel File

2007-08-30 Thread Paul deCoursey
NavigateToUrl should work. This is really more of a general Web
Development question though. The real work would need to be done on the
server in some sort of web application. You need to set the header of
the response to the correct mimetype so that the browser can decide what
to do with the file. You can also send headers to will instruct what to
use for a filename. I can't really provide much more guidance without
more details on what you are using server side, and that would really
bring us out of scope for this list.
