[flexcoders] Re: Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-19 Thread sleekdigital

I would be interested in such a list.  I think a lot of developers
will be interested in both framework and application... sometimes we
need to  extend or make a new component to meet the requirements of
our applications for example.

[flexcoders] Re: Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-19 Thread Tim Hoff

I agree with you.  It might be beneficial to have a separate list for component/framework related threads.  It's probably cumbersome to weed through the development questions and answers some times.  I personally joined this list because I was led here by a link at Adobe and the list description was applicable to my Flex usage.

The flexcoders mailing list is for enterprise software developers, developing Rich Internet Applications using Macromedia Flex. The list will discuss methods and practices for Flex RIA development, including MXML and ActionScript 2.0, as well as best-practices including testing, design patterns, J2EE and .NET integration, etc.
However, imho this is a two-way street.  Application developers learn and benefit from component/framework threads.  And conversely, some component/framework developers appreciate the feedback from developers that are using Flex to create real enterprise solutions.  I am slowly but surely digging deeper into the Flex framework and its advanced concepts.  So for me, it's good to have both sides in the same place.

whats wrong with using the official Adobe forums? :)

the Adobe Labs structure is quite cool (AS3, Flex Framework, General
etc), maybe need one for Flex Components too?)

I've actually quietly made some new Flex mailing lists; I've let it
simmer while waiting for Flex 2 to become final. I don't think too
granular of lists works well as there's too much overlap in a lot of
things. But I do see one problem arising with one super list like this
- not only are the spectrum of topics vast, now you got to content with
two major versions of the language in use (1.5 and 2), and so you'll
have to do a lot prefacing of context in every single message.

So... to alleviate that, I created the following:

Flex 2- General :: General discussion regarding anything Flex 2.
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-General

Flex 2- Coldfusion :: Topics regarding Flex to CF integration
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-CF

Flex Builder 2 :: Discussion regarding the IDE, debugging, design,
etc
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-Builder

Flex Jobs :: Recruiters welcome!

In the Flash world there is:

FlashCoders - questions related to coding in flash - usually you've
looked everywhere else first
FlashNewbies - questions for newbies
http://www.figleaf.com/Community/listserv.cfm
ExtendFlash - questions related to JSFL, XML2UI, Commands, Behaviours,
Timeline Effects and Tools
http://www.flashguru.co.uk/extending-flash-mailing-list/

These lists served there purpose great. I could get nearly any question
answered from these three lists except when it came to component
development. There was nothing for that and it was really missed.

I wouldn't mind if we do the same thing for Flex and add a
component/framework development list to the list where we can ask about
list components (eh hehe - couldn't resist):

FlexCoders - questions related to coding in flash - usually you've
looked everywhere else first
Flex2Coders - i really want to add a flex 2 list but only if the adobe
people would join
FlexNewbies - questions for flex newbies
FlexExtension - questions related to extending the flex ide, flex
components or flex framework

Maybe something like that???

Hello all,

The Flex Frame Workers ...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexframeworkers/

To those who replied to this email and others that might have found it interesting, I bit the bullet.

Since flexcoders is on yahoogroups, I figured that it was just as easy to do it here also.

There is a new group for component and framework questions that will be
lead by me(Michael Schmalle, TeotiGraphix) and others in the future.

Anybody that seriously wants to 'dive' into the framework, this is the
place to do it. There are a ton of questions I wouldn't ask on
flexcoders but, on flexframeworkers, will be asked and answered.

Take a  look at my bolg and you will see why it probably is a good
idea to sign up for this list, even if you are not sure 'yet' if you
are a flex framewroker ;-)

Anyway, Mike will be on this list and this is what I do for a living,
lets help each other and turn this into another thriving ecosystem for
Flex2 proliferation!

There was nothing for that and it was really missed.

I wouldn't mind if we do the same thing for Flex and add a component/framework
development list to the list where we can ask about list components (eh hehe -
couldn't resist):

FlexCoders - questions related to coding in flash - usually you've looked
everywhere else first
Flex2Coders - i really want to add a flex 2 list but only if the adobe people
would join
FlexNewbies - questions for flex newbies
FlexExtension - questions related to extending the flex ide, flex components or
flex framework

Maybe something like that???

Hello all,

The Flex Frame Workers ...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexframeworkers/

To those who replied to this email and others that might have found it
interesting, I bit the bullet.

Since flexcoders is on yahoogroups, I figured that it was just as easy to do it
here also.

There is a new group for component and framework questions that will be lead by
me(Michael Schmalle, TeotiGraphix) and others in the future.

Anybody that seriously wants to 'dive' into the framework, this is the place to
do it. There are a ton of questions I wouldn't ask on flexcoders but, on
flexframeworkers, will be asked and answered.

Take a  look at my bolg and you will see why it probably is a good idea to
sign up for this list, even if you are not sure 'yet' if you are a flex
framewroker ;-)

Anyway, Mike will be on this list and this is what I do for a living, lets help
each other and turn this into another thriving ecosystem for Flex2
proliferation!

Peace, Mike

Steven,

I understand what you are saying, but the fact of the matter is; the more water you put in juice, the less zing it has.

I'm not trying to take over the world, I am doing something that will either work or not work.

As far as Adobe monitoring 'this' list, don't if you can't. This is not
why I did it and I definatly don't expect Adobe to answer questions and
get 'fragmented'.

There is nothing you could say to me, that would make me think this
list is sutable for the questions I want to ask. Besides, I have asked
many(search the archives) and they have not been answered.

I figure this, If I can get a 'more' consolidated list of users that
has deep questions in them that are getting answered, then it has
succeded. As Flex2 moves forward, there are so many avenues it could
lead.

One final note, pardon me if I used the flexcoders list inappropriatly,
I could have just posted it on my blog and got plenty of interest there.

Thanks, Mike

Steven,

I have a question;

Isn't a move like this (creating a framework/component) list, like
refactoring in OOP? Essentially, this thought came from intuition about
2 months ago when my 'development problems' were not being met.

I see a way to grab a 'niche' of developers like myself and let us play
off of our own intelligence. This means developers looking at questions
of a list completly related to components and the framework see only
questions about framework programming.

I am not an application developer and do not want to be. So, comming
from a component developer's perspective, I see this as completly
necessary and for the most part required.

If I am nieve, I will learn.

Thanks,

My post was meant simply to respond to a recurring thread
since this list first started, as to whether we should have one list or multiple

flexcoders become irrelevance for a majority of the membership, there's no
immediate benefit from breaking our current flexcoders list into separate
lists.  Sheer volume of messages isn't really the issue - whether we
receive 100 messages a day from one list, or 50 messages a day from 2 lists,
doesn't make the parsing and responding to the lists any easier or any more

I'm not sure what questions you have been asking that

This is the problem I am struggling to explain. This wasn't entirely 'my' idea.
There were many developers that expressed some interest in this.

Since I am talking to you, I am sorry for posting this on flexcoders. We
wouldn't be having this conversation that feels like a do while loop gone wild
if I hadn't posted it.

As far as my questions unanswered; I am sure engineers at Adobe are busy, this
seems obvious.

There still hasn't been any form of communication created better than face to
face.

Just walking down the trail enjoying the scenery and ahh, wasp nest, run!

Thanks for you time Steven,

Re[2]: [flexcoders] Re: Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-29 Thread Andriy Panas

Hello Steven,

I support the fragmentation of flexcoders into separate mailing lists.

1st factor:  Flex community is growing fast
---
2779 messages were posted to Yahoo! Flexcoders mailign list in May 2006 alone,
while there was only 1839 messages in May 2005.

2nd factor : Subscribing to any new Yahoo! based list and tracking
updates from this list is very easy.
---
For example, I am subscribed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailing list as well ;) and this does not do me any harm.

3d factor : The more sources of knowledge  - the better is for researcher
---
For example, there are bunch of remnants of USENET groups hosted at
Google servers:

    * macromedia.flash.flash_remoting
    http://groups.google.com.ua/group/macromedia.flash.flash_remoting
    * macromedia.flash.data_intergration
    http://groups.google.com.ua/group/macromedia.flash.data_integration?lnk=lr&hl=uk
    * macromedia.flex.general_discussion
    http://groups.google.com.ua/group/macromedia.flex.general_discussion
    * flex.general_discussion
    http://groups.google.com.ua/group/macromedia.flex.general_discussion
    * macromedia.richintapps
    http://groups.google.com.ua/group/macromedia.richintapps

Only the strongest community will survive :)
