Re: [Flexradio] audio punch

2007-06-05 Thread Ahti Aintila
John, Gerald and All,

John is right about the commercial broadcast like frequency response
of the SDR-1000 transmitter.

Instead of John's statement about the traditional amateur radios, I
would like to say that in their frequency response basses are already
somewhat attenuated, which means that the higher frequencies are
pre-emphasized up to a certain corner frequency, beyond which the
frequency response goes down rapidly.

That will add the audio punch, which I like. I sincerely believe that
this is also the explanation what Stig was asking for. Another
additional property of the SDR-1000 decreasing the punch, is
obviously the accurate feed forward control of the peak power that
prevents transmitting signal going to the clipping level.

As you know, software defined radios can be put to different tasks. To
me it is mostly a measurement instrument like a spectrum analyzer and
an excellen receiver - especially having now the Janus/Ozy connected
to the radio. Sometimes I would like to use it also as an efficient
ham band transmitter, but according to my (not so humble) opinion Flex
has so far almost completely ignored the needs of serious DX hunters
by delaying the introduction of a multichannel equalizer combined to a
feed forward compressor that was already started almost four years ago
by the initiation of Phil Harman.

I think, it is a shame, if Flex-5000 will be entered to the
marketplace without at least a promise of a quick update to this
optional feature.

My very best regards to all and especially to Gerald,
Ahti OH2RZ

It simply is in the adjustments. Traditional amateur radios have
pre-emphasis in the audio, i.e there is a certain amount of bass already
there. The SDR1K is flat as a pancake. When you add bass, either externally
or with the built-in EQ, you are simply adding pre-emphasis.

The SDR1k was designed to be flat just like a commercial broadcast
 transmitter.

 Hello, please stop this. :-)
I dont want any discussion around ESSB / and or DX-pileups modulation. Whats
 best etc.
My point is only to state the fact that SDR-1000 handle bass-less modulation
 much
less punchy than other traditional transceivers, f.example my TS-870 or
 IC-746PRO.
Same power-meter used. Thats it! If there is an explanation I would like to

 Stig and Jim,

Dale is telling the plain truth, if your main interest is getting your
signal through in noisy conditions and DX pileups. The basses convey
very little speach information, but eat up the limited power of your
transmitter. Unless you want to broadcast a Hi-Fi music program on ham
bands use a good quality multi-channel equalizer to attenuate the
lower frequencies of your modulation. And if you want real information
carrying audio punch, you may use a PROPERLY MADE compressor or even
RF clipper. However, never use compressors and/or clippers, if the the
 basses are not attenuated.

Almost four years' time already I have tried to convince our Flex
software wizards and gurus to implement an integrated audio processor
that would enhance the speech signal intelligibility in noise at least
as well as explained in the following ancient articles. Sorry for
this repeated use of the bandwidth, but please, please, read carefully
 and understand these:
 http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/filtclip.pdf
 http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/speechproc.pdf

My understanding is that these functions can be implemented by the DSP
means much more elegantly than 30 years ago by the hardware means. I
sincerely hope that some of our software experts would take my request
 seriously.

The CWX utility keys the radio like a common morse key, not dot and

the built in iambic keyer. If you have to reverse the paddles and
don't want to do that reverse the dot and dash wiring on your paddles.

Re: [Flexradio] anybody using a sdr with Writelog

2007-06-05 Thread Edward H Russell
My radio computer is down at the moment, so can't do screen shots.
But the setup is really easy. In the vCom control panel I have only
the top row checked in the center box. On the left I have COM3, and
on the right COM13.

After setting that click UPDATE DRIVER at the bottom. That will open
a DOS box and activate your config. Then you can close the vCom
control panel.

In PowerSDR CAT setup select COM13

In Writelog port setup under COM3 select Kenwood rig.

That did it for me. Of course if you have something on COM3
substitute another port.

Hope this helps,

As for CW and rtty, there are just limited port numbers available.

I use a virtual com port to connect PowerSDR with Writelog. This
saves having to use any real com ports.

The only hitch I had was that Writelog only has four serial port
options, and the default vCom setup used higher numbered ports. I
fixed that by changing the port number assignments in the vCom setup
utility. Another approach would be to edit the Writelog ini file.

In my Writelog setup PowerSDR is my second (Right) radio. I have a
950SDX set up as Left. This works great.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR5000 Microphone compatibility?

2007-06-05 Thread FlexRadio KB Admin
Jerry,

There several different flavors of pin outs for the different models of
radio from a particular manufacturer that you listed below. The closest
this pin out match is Yaesu, but it is not 100% pin compatible since the
FLEX-5000 only needs pins for PTT and the mic input where other
manufacturers use the additional pins for other functions.

The microphone connector is the ubiquitous standard 8-pin Foster connector
found on just about every HF transceiver

Good news.

Does its pinout match a microphone found in just about every ham's shack?
There are probably tens of thousands of Yaesu/ICOM (maybe Kenwood also)
mikes out here in the real world that were included with the rigs we already
have. Same 8 pin connector, but will any of them work with the SDR-5000
without rewiring? Which ones?

All,

It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that I'm not going to have time
to play with the HPSDR stuff I bought (and I have a Flex5000A on order) so
I'm putting it up for sale. If anyone is interested, I'll bring the
equipment to Hamcom this weekend or I can ship it.

I have the following:

1 Janus assembled and tested (ESD package never opened)
1 Ozy assembled and tested (ESD package never opened)
1 Pinocchio kit (new in package)
1 Atlas (assembled by me and tested for proper LED function with power
supply but never tested with boards)
1 Atlas bare board (plus some excess resistors and capacitors from building
the first board, no connectors)
1 picoPSU-120 120 watt ATX power supply (used only to test the Atlas card
above)

Lot price $390 pickup or $400 shipped in CONUS only.

Contact me off reflector if you have any questions.

Being an Ex radio announcer and musician (guitar and bass) and sound

Punch in sound reinforcement means mid bass Punch...like a kick drum

that a Bassy sounds is wasted. in 2 ways... its wasted on 90% of the
hams listening who do not have the capability of hearing below say 150
cycles (their setups) and...most importantly MY POWER OUT IS WASTED!
I run an AL80B that puts out about 1000 watts. I do not have the exact
figures but this is what I have found to be true. If you are running
from 3300 - 0 hz and you have a Microphone that goes LOW...like a Heil
Goldline etc etc ...80% of your power is being used to transmit the low
frequencies below 250 cycles. Im guessing here but its roughly 70 to
90% per application depending on your setup. Think about it? add in

working the low bands and...its the BOTTOM OF THE SOLAR CYCLE...lol

Being the Rocket Scientist that I am and it doesnt take me long to look

get out on 100 watts at the bottom of a solar cycle. Don't use up most
of your power on some ego trip... Cut your feedline losses and roll the
bottom off and PUNCH thru the noise floor. Also one trick I use is to
turn the ALC way up ...all the way up 10/50/5000 ... push the EQ fader
up to about 90% and adjust with headphones the soundcard input and mic
gain on the flex... it will get you up there and the Mic Meter will not

although all other settings listed below enhance the signal. I plug the headset
directly into the Delta breakout box just to reduce the number of wires used.
It doesn't really matter but using the panel plug on the SDR requires wiring a
Yaesu plug and still attaching a stereo patch cable from the back of the SDR to
the breakout box. I use no external hardware but position the boom mic about an
inch away from my mouth and just below my lips. The mic is not as room noise
resistant as I would like so because of my soft voice, noisy computer and AL82
amp, I always use the Noise Gate. Here are my settings yours may need to differ:

  Mic Boost=NOT checked (not needed)
Latency=not checked
Mic Gain=55, Noise Gate= -35 (this depends on your room noise)
(Heil C5 Headset, other mics may differ)
NOTE: When using these settings, be sure to use the Leveler or EQ on
the TX EQ monitor or you may over-drive the transmitter.
To use Leveler and ALC the NOISE GATE MUST BE ENABLED (Feedback Will occur).
  Leveler=checked, MaxGain=12, Attack=3, Decay=5000, Hang=5000
ALC: Attack=10, Decay=3, Hang=5000
  TX Equalizer=checked, Preamp=6, TXEQ1=+6, TX EQ2=-6, TXEQ3=+8
ESSB:= -100 -3200Hz, Compander=2, Compression OFF

Re: [Flexradio] New Digs for my SDR1000

2007-06-05 Thread Thompson_Peter
Nice package!

Maybe it's obvious from the pictures - is this the 1w or the 100w
SDR-1000? What other Flex boards make up the set you installed?

Was the power supply home-brewed - what are the details? I'm sure lots
of people would appreciate learning about and maybe emulating the
design.

 Hi All,

While anxiously awaiting delivery of my new Flex 5000A I decided my
SDR1000 could use a new home. I moved it from its humble apartment
into a nice duplex with wonderful neighbors.

Are there any other openings in Gotham city? Sounds like a nice job for

Re: [Flexradio] What is audio punch?

2007-06-05 Thread Mike Naruta
Up here I listen to AMers on the DX-60 net (3.88).
It's not unusual to hear good audio on rigs and
even some broadcast transmitters that have been
converted to 75 meters.

Every so often someone comes on with full-range
audio that catches my attention because it sounds
as if he's in the shack with me. Guess what rig
they're running? Yep, an SDR-1000.

I love listening to Hi-Fi AM and SSB. My Delta 44
goes into a Marantz with a pair of huge speaker
systems. Sounds great. Of course, I can always
narrow the filter when the band gets crowded.

[Flexradio] Gearing up for the Flex 5000

2007-06-05 Thread Ken
Hello,

This is the second email I am trying to send. I am not sure if it is
getting to the group.

If this works, I would like to know what is a good choice of speakers to
purchase for the up coming 5000?

Also in the last email I had asked if anyone knows of a way to stretch
the PowerSDR screen to fit a 22 inch monitor?

I did not get any replies, so I thought maybe my emails are not getting
out??

Thank you.

Re: [Flexradio] Gearing up for the Flex 5000

2007-06-05 Thread Tim Ellison
There is an article in the KB on speakers. It is applicable to the
FLEX-5000.

http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10244

No. PowerSDR is a fixed width program. To make it fill the screen,
lower your screen resolution.
