Re: [Flexradio] Which Firewire card for Flex5000

2007-07-22 Thread Tim Ellison
Roger,

The KB article you referenced is still applicable. I have used both the
ADS and the SIIG with a FLEX-5000 beta unit without any problems. These
cards use the TI chipset.

The manufactured of the FireWire interface in the FLEX-5000 recommends
the Lucent AGERE FW323 chipset. One example of a Firewire host
controller with that chipset is Syba (PCI bus) p/n: SD-LUC-4F
http://www.syba.com/product/43/01/11/2/index.html

The KB article will be updated with this and additional information
later this week.

Subject: [Flexradio] Which Firewire card for Flex5000

Hi,

I am anxiously awaiting my Flex-5000 and want to be ready with Firewire
card installed in my Linux / Windows XP Dual boot PC.

The Flex-Radio website says 'coming soon' for Flex-supplied Firewire
solutions, but I want to be ready when the Flex-5000 arrives and so
ideally I would like to have either:

1. the option of buying the card from Flex and having it shipped with
the Flex-5000 or

2. the Firewire card already installed in the computer when the
Flex-5000 arrives.

Is there any chance of option #1?

If not, what is the current recommendation for a good FIrewire card?
Does the February 2007 knowledgebase article
http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10250
apply here? Of the listed choices, is one preferred over the others?

Thanks in advance, and

the 300Khz filter option addresses an END USER ADDITION of a filter on
the RFE board. This is an unsupported MOD option for those hams who need
special BP filters for LF operation (I think).

The explanation is on page 71 of the 1.8.0 Operations Manual:

"Enable 300kHz Filter: Engages the custom
filter bank on the RFE on low frequencies.
This is only useful if the custom filter
bank is populated with a low frequency filter
(not typical)."

please read and search the Operations Manual and Knowledge Base for
solid answers to most questions.

from page 86 of the Operations Manual in the Noise Reduction section:

"Block LMS: We have implemented a fast Block
LMS (least means square) routine. This routine
is faster than the original routine, gives more
taps in the filter, and will work on I/Q signals,
which enables BIN (binaural audio) to remain available

For more information about LMS algorithms, one might start with Wikipedia:

[Flexradio] two questions

2007-07-22 Thread FireBrick
I've read the manual on these two options but really don't quite understand
what they do.

1. On the Setup>General>Options menu.

What effects, benefits, whatever do I get by enabling or not using the
300kHz filter.
What does it do? I've seen no difference in anything I do.

2. on the Setup>DSP>Options menu.
What effects, benefits, whatever do I get by enabling or not using the Block
LMS option.
I read the manual, but I'm old and dumb and don't really understand what LMS
is?

Anybody care to tutor me?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000 RX Antenna Loop Configuration question

2007-07-22 Thread Tim Ellison
It does have a lot of usable gain on 6m, and I have several 6m single
and double hop QSOs in the log using the FLEX-5000 as proof, but if you
are going to do serious weak signal work on 6m you will probably need an
external preamp like most 6m rigs.

Well I would sure hope the new 5000 has some usable gain/ a decent
preamp on 6 meters so a external preamp is not needed like with the
1000...

Phil,

Go to the Knowledge Base and read these articles.

http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10218

Then came back and fire away with your questions. I am sure you will have
some. Everybody does when they start out doing digital modes with PowerSDR.
These articles will provide you the basics of how to run digital modes with
PowerSDR. BTW, sound cards are no longer needed along with hardware
interfaces between the radio and the computer. That should pique your
interest.

Re: [Flexradio] USB Adapter

Tim,

Nice to have information for the next laptop I buy, if any. I forgot
to mention that this laptop doesn't have a fire wire port either, so
the single PCMCIA slot is occupied with a PCMICA fire wire
card. Otherwise, it runs PowerSDR + Firebox at 35%. Next you are
going to tell me about a dual PCMCIA slot PCMCIA card :-) Anyway, I
think I can get the correct driver with information from "Marino"
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Tnx for assistance everyone; I would be lost
without it. I'm not out of the woods yet but progress is + however slow.

BTW, what is the SVN Repos URL? I entered the one from the web site
doc, but SVN doesn't like it.

Please, NO! We've already gone the route of blocking of cell phone
frequencies on scanners: a change from 'you can listen to anything, just
can't tell anyone'; blocking 10M on linears for fear of CB use; the RIAA
wanting to ban sales of A/D converters, FCC conferences on SDR-lucklily
defended by Bob and Flex. Our nearby town had an open policy on towers
until someone's atty. suggested a clarification of the policy before
putting up a new one: now the limit is 35 ft.

My second rig was built without help in 1953 on 1X2 wood rails from the
ARRL handbook. Entire metering available consisted of panel bulbs in
series with the plate circuits and open wire antenna leads, if you don't
count the #2 pencil I drew arcs off with to see if there really was RF
there. The first was a model A coil and a Lionel train transformer built
from a Tom Swift book, but we won't go there.

This is a case of: "It easier to get forgiveness than permission". Let's
continue to stay out of trouble and under the radar with present policy.
Or we will swiftly have problems.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000 RX Antenna Loop Configuration question

2007-07-22 Thread vtnn43e
I have not been on 6 with my 1000. Getting an external amp, preamp and
sequencer has always looked like a pain in the butt to config. Now the 5000
comes along and eliminates these problems. Looks like my 1000 will be going on
ebay to pay for a 5000.

BTW, when I first got my 1000 I still owned a Kenwood TS-850 and a Yaesu
FT-100D. I was skeptical that the TS-850 would have a better receiver. Boy was
I wrong. Both are gone now, sold on ebay. I can't even imagine using a
"regular" radio now. Why someone not want to own a radio with a panadapter is
beyond me. Seeing activity over 96khz is amazing. Never having to buy filters
is just too cool. And now this function that lets one have the preamp inline.
No other rig that I know of has ever had this ability.

Real radios do glow in the dark. Mine has one red LED on the front!

[Flexradio] svn 1350 problem to be aware of

2007-07-22 Thread FireBrick
I reported this as a possible bug, but I want to warn others using this beta
to be careful.

I found, and repeated, that if I manually use the slider to lower my drive
level to less than 50 watts, and then closed PWSDR 1350.
Upon restarting the program the drive power was changed to 75 watts or
sometimes full power.

What I just found out...upon restarting, the power is at 75 watts, when I go
from Standby to ON, it raises to full power.

Be Careful

Zack,

You have it absolutely correct. Cool, isn't it?

I am using that configuration on a beta FLEX-5000 right now. I have my
6m antenna on ANT2 using the RX loop. My HF antenna is on ANT1. I use
the Expert Antenna Selection setup in PowerSDR to assign this
configuration specifically for 6m. It automatically changes to use
other antenna connectors when other bands are selected.

But, you are not limited to 6m. The RX loop can tap off of any of the

For hams building their own equipment, there's no real requirement to
prevent out of band transmissions by automatic means. The FCC trusts
licensed hams to only turn the knob where they should. Likewise,
bona-fide R&D work can radiate incidentally (but you DO have to be
careful.. no experimenting with 1kW output amplifiers into antennas
without the appropriate Part 5 license)

The non-trivially-modifiable-hardware/firmware kinds of requirements
apply to equipment offered for sale.

This puts folks like Flex-radio in the position of providing a means
to restrict certain kinds of operation (out of band transmit,
scanning on receive), but there's no reason why someone can't freely
modify the widget to do this. In the case of PowerSDR, I presume
that it would simply require modification of some configuration
tables (since the band limits are different in various parts of the
world, they can't be embedded in the "code" which is the same for
all). I suggest then, that a bit of tinkering with MS Access would
reveal all and let you configure the system as needed for your
particular transverters.

It's a bit trickier for the 5K (given that there's a closed firmware
component) but I suspect that there are ways to do it. Flex can
probably supply the needed information if you can show a legitimate
need. Or, it might be embedded in PowerSDR.

Interestingly, hams just have to use good engineering practice, and
aren't required to demonstrate compliance, so, while it's nice to
have test equipment with traceable calibration, it's not legally
required. You can't be careless and cavalier, so if you want to try
and skate close to the edge, a note to Riley Hollingsworth to explore
the enforcement standards for "good engineering practice" might be useful.

(But, my cat's whisker and galena crystal didn't indicate any out of
band emissions.. Why did I receive a citation? )

[Flexradio] Flex-5000 RX Antenna Loop Configuration question

2007-07-22 Thread vtnn43e
Am I reading this right? It looks like the Flex-5000 does not need to use a
sequencer to have a 6 metre preamp in line. So I could have my 6 metre antenna
connected to one antenna port (lets say ANT 1) and my HF antenna to ANT 2. Then
I could have a non rf-switched preamp (lets say a DEMI 6MLNA) looped through
RX-1 & RX-2 for receiving 6 metres on ANT 1. And no external switching is
required for transmitting to keep the RF amp from destroying the pre-amp?

http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10400

RX Antenna Loop Configuration (RX1 IN & RX1 OUT)
One of the interesting features of the FLEX-5000 is the Receive only loop. You
can configure PowerSDR to take the RX signal from ANT1 (SO-239) and route it to
the RX1 OUT BNC connector and back in to the transceiver using RX1 IN. This
will allow you to easily place receive only devices in-line to the RX signal
chain. Examples of such devices would be a 6m pre-amplifier for weak signal
work, a preselector for attenuating strong out-of-band signal sources, or a
“wavetrap” for specific frequency interference nulling.

Mark,

In fact, I have so highly modified my SDR to be an IF system for my transverters

the FM portion of 2M) and I am fortunate to have the equipment and facilities
here to LEGALLY VERIFY compliance with FCC regulations 24/7.

This was a concern of mine with my early production 1K because of the EIRP I can
produce on VHF/UHF/MW. It is ALSO a major concern of the FCC regarding Software
Defined radios in general, as has been discussed on this reflector in the past
few weeks.

Having been in Flex's position in the past, I understand the predicament. But,
as the saying goes, if you don't ask

Phil, K3IB

Re: [Flexradio] transverter operation question

2007-07-22 Thread Lee Mushel
And What did Eric Say about the transverter operation? And my Dentron
transverter for use on the 500KHz stuff arrived yesterday. So hopefully
Gerald will take note that the next generation of radios should cover at
least DC to infrared.
