Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008
That band plan is a really awful thing. Why have a Flex Radio? The plan calls for 2.7 kHz SSB bandwidth and 6 kHz AM (and not much of that). You sure don't need a Flex radio to do that. Perhaps we can derail this thing. Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008
Jon, Take it positively. Isn't it good that you have the excellent digital filters in your Flex Radio? With the 2.4 kHz SSB filter you can pass safely your 300 Hz to 2.7 kHz audio modulation to the ionosphere and rest safe that you don't splatter around with your unnecessarily broad transmission and disturb your fellow hams on the neighboring channels. And by the way, I really wonder that some still, after more than 60 years of amateur SSB, want to use double sideband with full carrier outside anywhere else than in Faraday cages of some Radio Museums. Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008
The Flex's ability to receive, and to transmit, bandwidths greater than 2.7 KHz make it my favorite radio, by far. Fortunately out here on the West Coast, bands such as 75 meters are not at all congested. If the bandwidth is available and you're not interfering with anyone, what's the harm of running a SSB signal that's 4 to 5 KHz wide? It sounds *great* on the Flex. Give it a try. Once you do you'll realize that 2.4 KHz audio, by comparison, sounds terrible. As for AM - some of those old boatanchors truly sound amazing and are a joy to listen to. And it's also a step back into history, envoking a different era of ham radio. Why run AM, you wonder? Heck, you might as well ask, why run CW? Both are outdated (in my opinion), but both can also be great fun. This is the new IARU Region 2 band plan that goes into effect January 1, 2008. It has not been adapted by the FCC and is not actually law, nor does it automatically become part of the FCC regulations. I believe it will by 2010. Just in time for the sunspots to start increasing and better conditions. The great thing about owning a SDR, the software can be changed the same day it goes into effect. [Flexradio] Band Plan
Hi, Very similar to the frequency by bandwidth plan RM-306 ARRL proposed and FCC turned down with most of the same problems that caused the FCC to turn it down. Screws CW and digimode operators. What happened to the 7070 US digimode subband? I operate digimode DX on 7035, so now Region I III will share it with Region II, so goodbye DX. Provision for PIII, which probably is inevitable. Note they are out of SSB operators hair at expense of CW and narrow band digital modes. All the same as RM-360 except no one got to make comments or oppose it. That's democracy for you. You can see ARRL's behind this. CW code practice on 3525 and 7025, or are they going to discontinue that too? Lousy magazine anyway. Suggest we write FCC so they don't make it law, and then we can ignore it Read comments on eham.net Chas W1CG. ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008
Hi Scott, Sounds like good thoughts. Here's the way I feel about band plans: There is a good analogy between hunting regulations and communications regulations. There are antique hunting weapons and modern fire arms. It is universally accepted that different seasons make for safety and maximum results. Generally speaking different seasons for archers, black powder, modern firearms etc. Modern Firearms tend to get the bulk of the hunting season. Similary there are antique communication modes and modern communication modes. It must be accepted that different spectrum allocations will make for minimum interference and maximum results in the communications world. Generally speaking different spectrum for CW, AM, SSB and modern digital modes . Over the long term, digital modes ought to get the bulk of spectrum. Now there is a serious problem with ARRL's attempt to allocate spectrum by waveform bandwidth. One can no more separate communication modes by bandwidth then one can separate hunting seasons by muzzle velocity. There is too much overlap. My two cents worth... Hi Tim, Thanks for your fast answer... It would be nice if the powers that be could revisit the keymap and bring it up to the current release of PowerSDR. Seems like there are a number of vacant slots in the Alts Ctls, not to speak for three key combos... I suppose I could make a recommendation if I knew who to make it to... Likewise CW memories don't seem to have a correlation with CWX. (Might it be necessary to be able to switch focus between the main and CWX windows as well as reassignment of keys?) Isn't it good that you have the excellent digital filters in your Flex Radio? With the 2.4 kHz SSB filter you can pass safely your 300 Hz to 2.7 kHz audio modulation to the ionosphere and rest safe that you don't splatter around with your unnecessarily broad transmission and disturb your fellow hams on the neighboring channels. And by the way, I really wonder that some still, after more than 60 years of amateur SSB, want to use double sideband with full carrier outside anywhere else than in Faraday cages of some Radio Museums. [Flexradio] Try this please
Try this with your SDR 1000 or SDR 5000 PowerSDR version 1.10.1 or later. Set SDR in CWL or CWU Set break in delay to 5000 msec Connect SDR to dummy load Tune your signal in on a 2nd RX. Set your power on SDR now to Zero. Send a dit on the SDR. Do you hear a tone that remains on for as long as your breakin delay is set for? (This tone may be slightly off from the signal you first tuned in.) Let me know what you get. Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008
Particularly when well EQ'd, the fidelity and intelligibility is greatly increased even at a 40Hz to 3.5Khz transmit band-pass. One does not have to second guess what is being said by the other station, as at that band-pass it is starting to sound like they are right in your shack sitting next to you while conversing. Being unsociable is either knowingly transmitting into someone else's band-pass, or transmitting a broad signal in crowded conditions, both of which says a lot about the individual operator as opposed to the bandwidth he is currently occupying. Remember, this operator is on a Flex, and can easily adjust their transmit bandwidth on the fly. 73, Mike W5CUL -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Maarten Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 10:02 PM To: FlexRadio Reflector Subject: Re: [Flexradio] New Bandplan effective Jan 2008 What is wrong with 2.7kHz bandwith on SSB?
