Re: [Flexradio] SVNs and new database. Was: SSB Tx Audio Punch

2008-01-06 Thread Tim Ellison
No, it is not a requirement to create a new DB for every SVN that contains a
PowerSDR change. See the KB article about when a new DB should be considered.

Are we supposed to start with a new database for every new SVN, or
simply keep the database used with SVN versions separate from that used
with the release version? It'll be a pain changing antenna, CAT, VAC and
other settings for every new SVN I download.

2008-01-06 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Alan,
It's not necessary to change the database; however, you should consider
doing so if you are having problems.

Save the old database under a different name. Create a new one-its done
automatically when you start PowerSDR. If the problem goes away, you know it
was related to the old database. If you still have a problem, it wasn't
database related so you might as well import the one you saved and look
elsewhere for a solution. In this way you won't have to load new settings
unnecessarily.

cool! At least thats my vote!

Before I forget, John, there *is* an analog meter display on the Console
(my original Console had two different analog meters, and I ditched one
of them when I went to my new code ). The existing analog meter is also
in the Flex console, and it's an "edge" style meter which can be
selected to replace the default "LED" meter. You can select this edge
meter via the Setup menus (I'm not sure which one - it might be
Setup>Appearance>Meter).

If you go to my blog at http://k6jca.blogspot.com/, you'll see this edge
meter in my Console. Was this the one you were thinking of?

Jeff,

Thanks for posting your console mods! The panafall (waterpan?) display
is very cool and I'm enjoying the new snap feature.

Very nice indeed! Thanks for sharing it!

Also, your comments on the 'comb' effect on the waterfall got me
thinking. One of the reasons I've been enjoying the Flex radio is that
it provides some really interesting input for the visual sense
that "ordinary" radios don't. I'm sure RTTY and other digital ops have
a similar sense of enjoyment in understanding some of the visual
artifacts that would otherwise go unnoticed if we were "only" listening
to signals. I've loaded "CWGet" on my machine and enjoy watching the
CW as it comes in - seeing the cyclic fading provides a different
perspective than merely listening to it.

Anyway, thanks again!

Alas, the old, large, boatanchor-style s-meter is no more. It became
much to difficult to maintain my original code after Flex adopted some
of my features (I'd get a tremendous numbers of "merge" errors when I
tried to merge my code with their new code base), and so I decided that,
if I was going to continue playing with the code, I'd start off with
their new code base as my basis. Because I never used the old meter
(although very cool, it's scale was not linear, and therefore not
accurate), I decided not to carry it over to the new code.

By the way - I just uploaded (minutes ago), a new .exe to the SVN
branch. There was a small bug in that the pan/waterfall combo choice
would disappear from the display pull-down menu if you selected SPEC
mode. And while talking on the air with friends this morning, we
discovered that, if playing back wave files over the air, we really
should turn off the "TX EQ" button. So I modified my front panel
"Playback" feature to temporarily turn Off the TX EQ (if it's On), but
only during Front-panel playback. At the end of playback it's put back
to its original (pre-playback) state.

Kudos', Jeff always comes up with those nice little extra's that polish the
display. He's got quite a list of enhancements.

Like John I'm a nut for that analog meter if it can be brought back.

Thanks Jeff!

is fantastic for CW and digital modes use. The other features are great
too. Gave me that "ohhh man, cool" moment when I first used it.I also

Re: [Flexradio] Java GUI for SDR-1000

2008-01-06 Thread John Melton
I mistakenly put a version of the sdr1000 hardware code that did not
support parallel ports. I have updated it on java.net so you should be
able to do an 'svn update' from within the java-sdr directory and it
will update the binary. I have only been using the USB cable, so that
one slipped through.

The jack output implies that you already have jackd running! Also jackd
is being started with -dhw:1 do you know if that is the correct device?
If it is the only sound card in your system you would need to change
the configuration entry from -dhw:1 to -dhw:0.

[Flexradio] ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP

2008-01-06 Thread FireBrick
Unfortunately, family commitments have limited my RTTY ROUNDUP time.
But:
I still hold High Score in zip code 60706, Single Op.

I did find that the TuneLatency/VAC issue did NOT appear.
Previously, activating the Tune Button to operate a auxiliary antenna tuner
or change antenna switch would result in a noticeable delay when starting a
transmission. A quick disabling of VAC and re-enabling would clear that
latency till the next use of the Tune button.

Apparently (while I didn't do a lot of band jumping) this anomaly has been
fixed.
Even when I purposely tested for this, I did not experience the anomaly.

The increasing delay of transmitted characters appearing on the screen
anomaly still exists.
With each transmission of a software rtty buffer, the printing of the
transmission would slow.
Again disabling and then enabling the VAC button would reset the delay to
zero where it would slowly build up again.

Again a big thanks to Steve Nance and his DDTUtility program that allows
automatic amplifiers and antenna switches to follow software band switching
was a boon to contesting.
I also made great use of Steve's program this past week chasing DX on 160
and 80.

PWSDR Tune Steps still need more user adjustable setting for fine tuning
frequency.
The present options of 1Hz, 10Hz are really too slow for cw or digital
contesting, and the next steps of 50Hz and 100Hz are far too fast for cw or
digital fine tuning.
Continuously variable or the addition of 5Hz and 20Hz tune steps would be
more appropriate.

don't think I worked any Flexonians in the contest but the 5K's adjustable
infinite filtering makes contesting much easier.

Thanks guys.

[Flexradio] Java GUI for SDR-1000

2008-01-06 Thread John Melton
I have created a Subversion repository at http://java-sdr.dev.java.net
with the source code for Java GUI for the SDR-1000.

I have uploaded several documents for setting up a Fedora, Ubuntu and
Mac OS X system (note this only runs on Intel Mac OS X currently),
Netbeans and some very basic details of using the GUI.

Please remember this is a work in progress. There are several functions
not implemented yet. In particular there are still some problems to
resolve with transmitting and I would recommend that you only run it in
receive only until we have resolved these issues. It is possible to
damage the PA if this is not setup correctly.

Regards,

John g0orx/n6lyt
