[Flexradio] no more BSoD's

2008-03-16 Thread FireBrick
After making that change to XP settings so I could see the error causing line
prior to the 'dump', I was able to find and correct the com port
incompatibility and no longer have those crashes.
Thanks to all who helped with suggestions.

Not sure why I never received a indication that that com port number as already
assigned (although not in use).
But the problem is resolved and all is well again.

[Flexradio] Mics for flexers

2008-03-16 Thread Robert Dennison
Hi all,

Have three questions about mics, but first let me say I'm a cw guy thru
and thru. Grew up on Telegraph Rd. Claim it permanently warped me...
(Absolutely true, Telephone Rd. ran parallel to Telegraph Rd a mile
South.)

Still I do like to have a mic for each rig. Just haven't bothered to buy
for my 1K. So here are the questions:

1. Given that the PowerSDR equalizer has a built in preamp and 10 bands
of equalization, why does it make a hoot what's used for a mic? Just
equalize and heat to taste...

2. About a 6 months ago a Radio Shack mic was recommended. Can anyone
remember the Model Number?

3. One of the neat things about the Panadapter is you can actually see
the SSB waveforms. It astounds me at the number of SSB sigs out there
with huge amounts of bass boost. Is there a reason? I seem to remember
that most of the intelligence in a voice signal is in the high frequency
fricatives?

Thanks in advance for helping out CW guy!

There's some mic specialists on this list who will no doubt cringe at
my oversimplifications below, but, I'll leap in:

There's more to mic differences than raw frequency response (otherwise
recording studios wouldn't spend kilobucks on mics). Polar
sensitivity (i.e. the mic's antenna pattern) can have a huge effect
on the sound one gets, partly because it changes the ratio of direct
and reflected sound. There's also mechanical effects (breath noises,
pops, etc.). Not the least is sensitivity.. a mic that's only
sensitive from 500-1000Hz and is down 20 dB at 2kHz, isn't going to be
equalizable, no matter how much gain you have.

Indeed, a lot of this can be done with clever DSP. Of particular
interest these days are phased array schemes that use multiple small
mics that adaptively track the source of the voice to create sort of
the ultimate in noise cancelling mic, without needing a boom hanging
off your head. (think astronauts or divers with their head inside a
helmet, or, for a more conventional application, video conferencing).
However, as we used to say when building motion control stuff, no
amount of closed loop control can make a wet noodle into a steel bar.

Hi Jim,

We haven't chatted for a bit, but sounds like you're having fun..

You make good points... to summarize: paying big bucks for raw
frequency response should be low on the list compared to polar
sensitivity and mechanical characteristics. To which I would add style
of operation (eg. headset) were I to use it intensively.

Am I close?
