Re: [Flexradio] CW tip for Pretty Betty Console

2009-05-13 Thread NZ8J
Thanks John!!

I just got the new version going and being a cw op only that was the
first thing I ran across. I was in the middle of trying to determine why
that was happening on the new version and not 1.18.0 using the same
buffer/sample settings when your email arrived It fixed the problem
here running about 15 ms delay although I would have thought a quad core
with 4 GB of ram should handle it...That does have me a little concerned
that the computer I just bought with the thought it had plenty of
overhead for future cpu intensive features might not be robust enough??

Anyhow thanks for taking the time to send out the email about this
issue. I really like the new look...

Wanted to pass this tip from Eric for CW users of the new skins console.
Really helps a lot.

The new skins console is CPU intensive, especially on fast CW break-in.
I was having problems on keying for short break-in delay setting . The
RX-TX-RX graphics on the screen were really soaking up the CPU and
caused keying problems when less than 30ms for CW QSK ops. Eric advised
to click the new option "Disable UI MOX Changes". This option
significantly takes care of the excess CPU jump for fast break-in CW.

The option to activate the "disable UI MOX Changes" is in the
Setup>DSP>Keyer.

Just an fyi guys. There is a patch for PowerDesk (file manager) that
stops the crashing on context menu.
Evidently it affects Windows Explorer too. Applied that and SVN is
working fine.

Thanks for your suggestions.

2009-05-13 Thread Jim KJ7S
Thanks Carl, I was surprised at how nice the "skins" were compared to the
excellent "defaults" and it was fun to get yet another "look" from PSDR. I did
notice a few anomalies with the "version", which included some Slider vs.
numbers/levels that were in some cases not jiving with the slider positions.
In another case, it seems that sometimes the database is having some trouble
updating and "holding" when it tries to write, which will sometimes cause a
lockup, or at least a loss of the changes. I haven't tossed a bug report yet
as I haven't quite figured out how to do that (Time for more Knowledge Base
reading ?)hihi. 73's tnt. Jim KJ7S

This solution was just figured out a few days ago, and I'm sure all the boys
who update the bug tracker are out at Dayton as we speak repeating the mantra:
Click Tuning Click Tuning in between grease dogs, bad coffee and
pepcid.

As far as updating .Net goes, I just let "Windows Update" figure it out and
kept updating until there was no more to update.

[Flexradio] SIMD from Missouri

2009-05-13 Thread Bob McGwier
I believe in SIMD but I had a rude awakening today. My P4 HT socket 478
processor does not have SSE3, much less SSE(I wish).

I would like for people to download (using svn)

branches\n4hy\SIMD_ID\Source\SIMD_ID\Release\Identify_SIMD.exe

or if you have x64

branches\n4hy\SIMD_ID\Source\SIMD_ID\x64\Release\Identify_SIMD.exe

and run this and make sure it delivers the answers you expect and does
not blow up. There will be run time identification of architecture and
optimized routines speeding up the worst offenders such as agc soon.

Just when you thought we were going to give you a breather..

Thanks,
Bob

I was looking at the Pretty Betty SDR and suddenly lost most of the volume.
I did not push any buttons, just looking. The Panadapter trace dropped way
down to the base line. Now when I open SDR 1.18.0 the volume is still almost
gone. Has something happened to the radio???

Re: [Flexradio] Tortoise Crash

2009-05-13 Thread k4elo
Yep, I'm sure Eric.

Circumvented the problem for the moment - downloaded PrettyBetty
with my notebook and transferring it with a usb drive.

However, I will continue to investigate the problem as I would
like to have SVN capability on the main computer.
Lots of reports of similar crash behavior on the Tortoise list.
Looks like it is always some program incompatibility as you
suggested. Just need to find out which one. I have several
shell things on here like Mingw and msys used in C++ development.
However, since Tortoise runs fine on the notebook, I can compare
the context menus and see what program is not installed on the
notebook and maybe that will be the culprit.

Re: [Flexradio] Pretty Betty Title bar still blue?

2009-05-13 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Thanks Beppe. Does this mean that in the images I see on Flex's home page,
the title bar color is determined by the windows theme instead of the skin?

If so, isn't there a way for the application to set the title bar color for
the PowerSDR window alone? I'm sure I have seen applications that do do
this. Anyway, not to distract at all from the tremendous amount of work you
guys have done in this area (and more!). Not at all a high priority, just a
thought to really put icing on the cake.

Terrific job,

Wayne,

I'm wondering if you installed the x64 version on a 32-bit OS or vice
versa

(win32 on 64 bit machine). If I were you, I would uninstall tortoise,
reboot, then reinstall (making sure you have the right version for your
OS),

and reboot again. I suspect that will fix you up.

If that isn't the issue, it may be some kind of conflict with another
shell

integrated program. Look to see what else shows up in your context (i.e.
right click) menu while tortoise is uninstalled.

Re: [Flexradio] Error with Pretty Betty

Tim, the bug _was_ on the Bug Tracker (number 2041, posted on 29 Jan
09). So no process has been circumvented.

But from the date I reported it through to today, that bug has remained
open. Thankfully though, _because it was posted to the reflector this
time,_ Lee came back with a proposed solution, and it worked!

- Jeff

P.S. And as of a few minutes ago, Eric has closed out my original bug on
the Bug Tracker. It's fixed.

Re: [Flexradio] examples of 10 new skins

2009-05-13 Thread Edwin Marzan

When Flex gave us the power to change the colors on the console it was a great
thing but I could never figure out how to make the color combinations look
better than the default. It is apparent that the new skins are the result of
significant research and talent from true professionals. For those of you who
care only about performance I would like to say that if I have to look at this
while I operate the radio it should be pleasing to the eyes. This definitely
adds to the "WOW" factor of my radio and I sincerely appreicate the effort.

Great work!

Subject: [Flexradio] QST to all Flexers - New PowerSDR "look and feel"
version released for test

To all Flexers,

There is a brand new version of PowerSDR, code named "Pretty Betty" that
has been released for testing. This version of PowerSDR utilizes
different "skins" to create multiple visual presentations of PowerSDR.
With this new feature, it is possible to create a different "look and
feel" using a series of graphics to represent the different control
surfaces on the PowerSDR console. Eric and Beppe (IK3GIV) have been
collaborating for a few months now on the logic to present the user
definable skins and the graphics to create several very stunning skins.
You change the skins using the drop down box in the
Setup->Appearance->General menu option.

If you have SVN configured, you can download this version using the
following URI:

svn://206.216.146.154/svn/repos_sdr_windows/PowerSDR/branches/ke5dto/PrettyB
etty/bin/Release

Just do a SVN checkout using the path above to a folder you create and
you will have the new version of PowerSDR downloaded to that folder.

For those who are not familiar with SVN code checkouts, here are a few
KC articles you can review.
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50243.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50245.aspx

Please note, that this version , like all versions in the
PowerSDR/branches section of the SVN tree is ALPHA/BETA code and you
might find a few things that do not work 100% correctly yet. If you do
run across something, PLEASE report it using the Bug Tracker and do not
report bug reports to the Reflector. They will get lost in the "noise"
and the problems will not get addressed. You can access the Bug Tracker
here:
http://support.flex-radio.com/BugList.aspx?it=b

This is an early Dayton hamfest "present" so enjoy.

Re: [Flexradio] Pretty Betty

2009-05-13 Thread FireBrick
I think that all versions of PWSDR, whether v18.0 or latest SVN have a
Equalizer option for receive.

If LSB or USB are enabled
There is a RX EQ and TX EQ buttons to the right of the Mic Gain, Compander,
Vox buttons.
These enable/disable the equalizer settings you select in the Equalizer Menu
in the top line, just under the Windows Description Bar

Setup - Memory-Wave - EQUALIZER etc etc.

What is this "BCI Rejection" button I see in these images? I don't see it when

[Flexradio] Pretty Betty Title bar still blue?

2009-05-13 Thread Joe - AB1DO
When running PrettyBetty, the window Title bar still shows up blue, yet on
Flex's home page I see that the title bar is actually in the color of the
skin.

I am running XP Home SP2, with windows and buttons (under Windows Display
Properties->Appearance) set to Windows XP style. I know I have optimized XP
a long time ago and cannot remember if I did anything that would prevent the
title bar of the window changing color. Any thoughts?

[Flexradio] Pretty Betty and Vista x64 operating systems

2009-05-13 Thread Tim (W4TME)

To all,

Just a point of information. Pretty Betty uses the new VS2008
development environment and as such needs .NET 3.51 framework to run.
Also, not all of the components of the VS2008 versions of PowerSDR are
compatible yet with the x64 operating systems (Vista and Win7), so you
may encounter errors running "Pretty Betty" on those operating systems
at this time. Development efforts are underway to eliminate the issues
preventing the it from running on Vista x64. You should have no
problems with XP or Vista x86 (32-bit)

Like all SVN versions in the "test" branch, it is alpha/beta code and
there will be bugs in it until all are vetted out. Please keep entering
those bug reports into the Bug Tracker, This is how we get the product
ready for production as quickly as possible.

Thanks to all who have provided feedback to date. All of it is very
valuable.

I delete the XML files in folder */Skins/Default
Now this works!

To all,

When reporting any issues with PowerSDR, *please* use the Bug Tracker.
http://support.flex-radio.com/BugList.aspx?it=b

It collects the important information like what radio and operating system you
are using, which is critical information needed in debugging any type of
problem.

Reporting bugs on the Reflector will *not* result in getting them addressed.
The development team works through the bug tracker database and not from the

Eric and the team can get them analyzed and if necessary, fixed quickly.

Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] Sampling rate and buffers for CW operators?

2009-05-13 Thread Joe - AB1DO
You can actually see the effects on filter width at various sample rates and
buffer sizes in the Owners manual, appendix A.

In the section Filter Effects you see that the minimum filter width possible
is proportional to the sample rate and inversely proportional to the buffer
size. And on page 203 a series of graphs visualizes the actual filter
shapes, actually measured (with a FLEX-5000), at various sample rates and
buffer sizes for a 25Hz filter.

The narrowest/sharpest filter possible is indeed for 48kHz sample rate and
4096 DSP Buffer. The 96kHz/4096 filter shape is the same as the 48kHz/2048
(96/4096 = 48/2048), etc.

It all becomes rather dramatic at 192kHz (for a 25Hz filter) and as the
illustration shows, at 192kHz/4096 it is pretty much pointless to select
25Hz and 50Hz filters as the minimum possible filter width is 70Hz (with a
Blackman-Harris window)

Of course, whether you can get away with a 4096 buffer size and 48kHz sample
rate depends pretty much on your system set-up, as it is the highest latency
setting, as the same Appendix also tries to explain.

It'll be great to have all these interdependencies gone with N4HYs multirate
code, because this is probably the one single, most confusing issue for
PowerSDR users.

(Besides, it makes the manual thinner too and I won't have to overwork my
poor brain anymore trying to illustrate how all the interdependcies work ;-)

Lee is using the optimal CW settings for filters. The 512 TX setting
actually reduces RX latency. My only difference is the 96khz sample rate,
which I change to 48khz if I need sharper filters. 96khz is pretty good
except in the sub-100hz region.

I work weak signal low band DX on CW

I use filters as narrow as 25hz routinely

I'm set up at 48khz DSP CW set at 4096 on RX 512 on TX. Audio buffs set
at

512

The filters are noticeably steeper to the ear at these settings

[Flexradio] Error with Pretty Betty

2009-05-13 Thread roland etienne
Hi all,

Trying to run svn Pretty Betty version, I have a fatal error at the end of
initialisation, on two different PC:

The OS is XP sp3, and PSDR 18.0 runs fine

The error is:

Input string was not in a correct format.

At System.Number.StringToNumber(..)

At System.Number.ParseSingle(..)

Etc..

Any idea?

Thanks for the fun!

73, Roland f8chk.

Re: [Flexradio] QST to all Flexers - New PowerSDR "look and feel" version released for test

2009-05-13 Thread Giuseppe Campana

Hi David,

thank you for comments.

The new console is fully sized as traditional console,
try to expand it to the maximum of your screen for an impressive
radio front panel ;-)

Hi Beppe,

Congratulations to all of you...the long wait has been worth it.

As you say, there is still a lot of work to do in tidying things up
and working all the bugs out but it will be worth it in the end.

Do you have plans to make it look as good on a large screen as well
as a small screen??

Thank God for the Italian sense of STYLE!!

2009-05-13 Thread Sergey Abramov

Beppe,
This will work for SDR-1000?

Sergey RW3PS

Hi Flexers

I want to say thanks to Eric and Matt for all the work done to
implement my graphics on new Console.
Being able to make PowerSDR even more " real radio" has always been my
desire, from a long time.

The team, Eric Matt and me, has worked very well, I think, but there
is a lot of work to do for complete "the opera",
what you're looking at is an important part of the new console's skin,
but not all.

Of course.stay tuned !

Some words about the skins:

- Every skin needs particular colors table for text, pan's line, ecc ecc
- I suggest not to use too many colors to obtain a realistic effect.
- use colors similar to the theme of skin (light blue on blue skin,
light green on military skin, ecc ecc)

Ok, now enjoy your new Flex, and how FRS always said; "you have a new
radio every new software" !

Yes..Tune in excitement !

To all Flexers,

There is a brand new version of PowerSDR, code named "Pretty Betty"
that has been released for testing. This version of PowerSDR
utilizes different "skins" to create multiple visual presentations of
PowerSDR. With this new feature, it is possible to create a different
"look and feel" using a series of graphics to represent the different
control surfaces on the PowerSDR console. Eric and Beppe (IK3GIV)
have been collaborating for a few months now on the logic to present
the user definable skins and the graphics to create several very
stunning skins. You change the skins using the drop down box in the
Setup->Appearance->General menu option.

If you have SVN configured, you can download this version using the
following URI:

svn://206.216.146.154/svn/repos_sdr_windows/PowerSDR/branches/ke5dto/PrettyBetty/bin/Release

Just do a SVN checkout using the path above to a folder you create
and you will have the new version of PowerSDR downloaded to that folder.

For those who are not familiar with SVN code checkouts, here are a
few KC articles you can review.

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50243.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50245.aspx

Please note, that this version , like all versions in the
PowerSDR/branches section of the SVN tree is ALPHA/BETA code and you
might find a few things that do not work 100% correctly yet. If you
do run across something, PLEASE report it using the Bug Tracker and
do not report bug reports to the Reflector. They will get lost in
the "noise" and the problems will not get addressed. You can access
the Bug Tracker here:

This is an early Dayton hamfest "present" so enjoy.

fail (BYP not on) and subsequent tunes turn on the transmitter for a
couple of seconds and then back off again (no BYP light) - 1.18.0 is
working fine.

Best of, however, they are affordable.

Way to go Flex for going the extra measure.
