Re: [Flexradio] 3 Gb RAM? ( Was new PC components for 1500?)

2012-11-20 Thread Michael Tondee
The PC came from the manufacturer with 3GB. The configuration is two 1GB
sticks and two 512MB sticks occupying all four slots. It worked fine
that way for the last few years and only recently started exhibiting
this behavior. I first ran a 5K with it which I had to sell and then
later a 1500 which I eventually ended up selling because I thought I was
getting a 3000 but "life" intervened and that never happened. The
erratic behavior of the PC started sometime after the 1500 was sold.
Now that it looks like I'm going to be able to get a new 1500, I wanted
to sort it out if I can. I appreciate everyone's suggestions but the PC
is several years old and I'm due an upgrade. I've always built my own
PC's in the past, this was my first "name brand" in quite sometime. I
think I'm just going to pull my new PSU and my drives out and put them
in a new case with a new mobo, processor and memory. I have been
corresponding with Neal about that, hope I haven't driven him crazy with
questions. As I said, I've built PC's in the past but building an SDR PC
is a slightly different animal. Neal has already steered me away from
what I originally though about getting. He has suggested components but
I'm still trying to work the price down enough to satisfy the CFO ( XYL)

Thanks everyone,
MIchael, W4HIJ

You may be experiencing problems by having an odd memory configuration. Many
PCs really prefer to see even values of matched RAM (same size and speed). Your
BIOS may not be able to support the memory you're using, or the differences
between the chips may be causing irregular operation. I'd recommend getting a
matched set of RAM modules and trying that. You'll need to consult your
motherboard docs to see what speed and capacities are supported.

If you are concerned about the sidebands or carrier that you see (I think I
have seen it as well), I just created a narrower transmit bandwidth with a
high pass of 300hz and a low pass of 2000hz (or something like that).

The "blips" every second or so are the sidebands from the frequency
modulation when JT65 changes tones. Remember, every time you change
amplitude, frequency, or phase, you get modulation sidebands.

I am not sure what you mean by "tails". If you are seeing many spectral
lines other than the carrier at time other than when JT65 is switching
tones, you may be overdriving the TX audio section. Start by setting the TX
meter in PSDR to read mic level. Make sure that the mic level (actually the
audio input level) never exceeds 0dB. I normally set VAC TX gain to produce
-1dB for MFSK modes like JT65, WSPR, Olivia, MFSK-16, etc. For PSK31 or
other digital modes that have a significant amplitude component I use -2dB
or -3dB to ensure I have headroom and won't clip the signal in the audio
stages.

Could you not send VFO A audio on the Left Channel VFO B audio on the
right channel (more of a question than a statement) and then manage those
in VAC?

Again, that would take the some work in the VAC bridge.

Worth exploring.

would have two independant audio sources for psk/sstv/rtty etc where they fall

Why not use the VAC repeater and split the audio. That is what it is there
for. Then, you could use both at the same time. Then both applications
are full time connected.

I have had my HRD RX audio coming out my speakers and then fed that audio
into the Skype IN at the same time as a example.

You will then have to sort out the PTT lines, but that shouldn't be too
difficult.
