Makes no difference SSB OR AM
The issue is that when I enable an audio input, I can see the noise
increase and I can hear 60 he noise.
I'll do a complete screen capture tomorrow nigh.

Re: [Flexradio] Strange Noise in 5K Audio Chain - Follow Up

2013-01-08 Thread Steve Sterling

Bob-- I am confused. Seems normal to me.

Take a 100 watt audio amp. Like for your stereo. Turn the input to a
low-level device that takes lots of pre-amp gain equivelent to a mic,
like a phono input (or mic if it has it). Don't plug anything into it,
leave it unterminated. Now turn the volume up as high as it goes!
Surely, if you don't blow your speakers out, you will hear some noise.
There is low level noise from power supplies and the Brownian motion of
the electrons themselves. Plus with an unterminated input, you have
capacitively and inductively coupled low level noise from adjacent wires
or circuit board traces.

Also, the pictures show the level of this noise way way down RF-wise.
Essentially that picture shows the levels as if you had hooked a
transmitter into a sensitive receiver, and keyed up. Actual transmit
signals at 100 watts would be way way above the top of the grid. Sure,
turning off the audio input stages lowers it much more, but that just
shows how clean the Flex transmitter is.

level is increased. The level reaches the shown amplitude once the input
level is set to 40% or higher.

DRIVE was set to 0
Even with DRIVE set to normal level, no output is indicated on the RF PWR
meter.

I'd be interested to see how many people can duplicate this. It's easy to
try:
Set your display to Panadapter
Set DRIVE to 0
Disconnect your microphone
Disable all audio sources in the MIXER window
Key your transmitter
It should show virtually no output on the Panadapter display

Now ...
With NO mic connected
Open the Mixer and enable the mic of your choice
Set the level to 50, or higher
Key the transmitter
Does your Panadapter show the "noise"

If I listen to myself on another receiver it sounds like 60hz, but my power
supply is clean.
Unlike one of the other reports, I have not received any reports of bad
audio.
I'm very curious to see if others can reproduce this, especially if you are
not using 2.5.3

[Flexradio] noise floor on 15 meters

2013-01-08 Thread Don Baughman
Check to make sure the preamp is turned on for 15 meters. If it is off the
noise floor will rise by the gain of the preamp on that band...about 15 db.

Re: [Flexradio] Strange noise in 5K audio chain

2013-01-08 Thread K0DAN
I don't believe I have any RFI issues here. I am running an Astron RM60M has
has never had any problems that I am aware of.

The "background noise level issue" described DOES here. I can reduce it by
about 30dB by muting all inputs on the mixer, but cannot make it fully
disappear.

I think it is a new phenomena, along with my SSB and AM audio sounding
muddy, over-compressed, bubbly etc. I have been using Rob W1AEX's audio
chain flow chart for several years and have had great audio. Recently my
audio went to hell and I have been having a really tough time getting back
to where it was.

This may be coincidence, but I only recently changed PSDR from 2.3.5 to
2.5.3 and from where I sit it seems that the audio chain changed
significantly.

Others with this problem might check to see if MIC BOOST is defaulted on...I
thought I had mine off, but discovered it's on...right out of the box
that'll add about 15DB gain to the audio chain. I use the balanced input.

Considering all of the RF ingress issues and EMI issues I have AND
considering I am using a Astron 50a with my Flex 5000a, I definately want to
know if there is any issues with the Astron.

While setting up a new PR40 on my Flex 5K, I’ve discovered some sort of
noise getting into the audio chain. With NO mic connected, if I key the
transmitter I’m seeing some “noise” that will cause about a 50% vertical
column on the spectrum display. If I disable all audio inputs in the Mixer
window, the noise disappears. Likewise, if I decrease an active input to 0,
the noise goes away. It's definitely not RF since I can set the DRIVE to 0
and have it occur. Even when the noise is at worst case, there isn’t any
output on the wattmeter. Listening on another receiver, it sounds like 60
hz from the power supply.

The power supply is an Astron RS-50A. I seem to recall some issue that had
to do with a jumper (or lack of one) between the negative output and the
50A’s chassis ground. Anyone ever run into this situation?

That is to ask is there anyone providing Band Data to the FL-7000 amplifier
from a Flex 5KA ??

This would be a cool setup. The FL-7000 has an internal power supply and
auto tuner. Has anyone done this?

I had a couple of them over the years and they were very picky about
working with other rigs (I was using FT1000D and never felt satisfied with
them!)

There should be no obvious problem with using them, let us know how you

[Flexradio] Phase2 Display on Flex-1500

2013-01-08 Thread David McClain
On my Flex-1500 the Phase-2 display always shows up, almost off-screen, in the
upper left of the window pane. I understand that it is showing the raw,
unfiltered, ADC/L and ADC/R. So when I go to the meter to select those two
readings, my Right channel reads about 5-6 dB lower than the left reading --
hence the offset in the Phase 2 display.

Is this something that I should be concerned about? as in send back to the
factory for adjustment? or is it just fine the way it is?
