Re: [Flexradio] Audio Rack and the 5000

What problem are you talking about? I certainly don't hear it? Must be
specific to your own setup (computer/power supply).

Well, some people just cannot hear it. But, I guarantee it. You put it
on the air and I will hear it. It is in all of the 5000s' Sorry about that!

Re: [Flexradio] 3000 or 5000?

2011-12-10 Thread Kent Tiburski
I concur with Brian. I have owned the 3000 but sold to upgrade to the 5000
for the ability to do VHF/UHF and a second rx. That's the rub with the 3000
but then it was designed as a "portable DXpedition" rig (which it does
extremely well!). The 3000 is a great home station rig too, it's only
drawback is noted above. What are your requirements? That would determine
which is suited best for you. What's really cool is the ability to run in a
contest and those mega stations next to you don't even bother you and you
can hear the weak ones!

No. You will find sensitivity and selectivity comparable. But the 10dB
greater dynamic range of the 5000 will allow it to operate normally with
signals down near the noise floor even in the presence of very strong
nearby interfering signals. If you live with a Big Gun nearby who floods
you with 60dB over S-9 signals, you will definitely want the 5000. If you
are not dealing with that kind of potential interference then you probably
won't notice the difference.

Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun

2011-11-27 Thread Kent Tiburski
Steve,

Nice looking pic! I bought a 3000 and really liked it. Had issues with
the newer Power SDR (Beta 2.0) that just kicked my butt, but that's old
news. Having said that I liked the SDR concept so much I've upgraded to the
5000 over a year ago. I can't say ANYTHING negative about it. My best
friend who is an engineer, also owns a 5000, told me some interesting facts
about the radio. Sherwood Labs has the 5000 as one of the top tiered radios
for RX. But when you read the notes about the radios, the flex beats out
the rest of the crowd! It IS the best sounding radio on both RX and TX I
have ever owned!

By the way I use a two monitor system here also. I use two 23 inch 1080p
monitors here. I had issues with the no "knob" configuration but quickly
overcame that! I saved the QST that had the FT-5000 review. The author had
a sidebar that said "it would be nice to be able to click on a signal and
QSY" (not exact). I thought, dude get a FLEX!

One of the reasons I bought the 5000 is the ability to configure your
system. 3000 is nice, but it is what it is, nice entry into SDR for sure.

I'm in the process of upgrading my antenna system and shack. Pics to
follow in a few months. Thanks Steve!
