Actually, there's an addon to HRD's logbook, called HRD Utilities which automates the LOTW process, both uploading and downloading. After every major session, I just click the icon and it looks at the log, finds all the Qs which have not yet been uploaded, does the encryption/signing, and uploads to LOTW. All I have to do is type in my LOTW password. Another button downloads all confirmations received since the last time, and updates the log entries to indicate that a LOTW QSL was received so that the award tracking screens are correct. I've been using this for a few years now. I use MiniDeluxe with HRDLog and DM780. If you do PTT by COM port RTS, it doesn't have the problems of PTT via CAT. I especially like the HRDLog feature where you select a bunch of Qs, hit LookupGoogleEarth, and it plots those QSOs on the Earth globe. Works very well. HRD doesn't do contesting well, so for that I use N1MM and export contest logs in ADIF, then upload them into HRDLog (and from there they get to LOTW). /Jack de K3FIV ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Fwd: Voice keyer through PSDR truncates end of audio on output, progressive worsening
Hi Mack, Have been using the new system for a while now. I jumped for joy when I found I could record on the fly within N1MM. Using Line 1 2 of VAC, not computer input for Mic. The beginning of the recording is the only issue I have had, can't seem to get it quite right so I tidy that up with Audacity. I also found that I had to reduce the tx gain on the VAC tab. Otherwise it is great and works just the same as traditional type rigs. I don't operate many SSB contests (mainly CW) but I have pretty considerable experience with the N1MM audio interface. I wrote the Flex KB article (needs updating) and was one of the beta testers for the new N1MM audio interface. The new N1MM audio interface allows two SEPARATE sound sources to be chosen. I have it set up with my computer soundcard for microphone input and VAC for output. All sample rates and delays are left at their PowerSDR/N1MM defaults. This feature is new to N1MM in the past month or so. Therefore when I want to record a voice macro I use the N1MM editor with CTRL-SHIFT-Fx where Fx is the function key to record and CTRL-SHIFT-Fx to stop recording. Then all sounds play back perfectly within N1MM without delay or truncation. I could never get things to work correct when using Windows Audio or Audacity to record the sounds. Give this a try and see if it works for you. I'll try to get the KB article updated in the next couple of weeks. 73, Mack W4AX --- On Tue, Jul 5, 2011 at 6:30 PM, Jim Jannuzzo jsqu...@msn.com wrote: I thought so- I believe you having the same sample rate up and down conversion issue that I was having on digital modes, and that 44.1 k is not where you want to be. I forced the VAC sample rates and the Windows sample rate to a multiple of the sample rate used in one of my digi programs. Since many Flexers use N1MM, they can contribute the sample rates for their wav files and for VAC. This will take FlexWire instructions from the 5000, 3000 or 1500, although I have not had it tested on a 3000. Currently PowerSDR only sends instructions out the FlexWire port for bands that are identified in the XVTRs form. Data values are identified in the UCB form where the FlexWire output is selected. This interface board is a fully constructed and tested surface mount board consisting of a DB9 FlexWire connector and short cable to the small board which plugs into the UCB. The board uses the same I2C chip, the PCA9555, that is used internally in the Flex products. The output of the chip then is routed through a header set of pins to the existing UCB. The user needs to install a supplied header on the UCB. I have been using this interface along with the PowerSDR code for over a year now (along with a handful of others) and it has been working without a hitch. My station has automatic switching all the way from 160 meters through 24GHz. VHF and above selects the appropriate transverter via the interface and UCB. The low bands are switched using band data from N1MM using DDUTIL to share logging and DXLAB. Completed FlexWire interface boards will sell for 25 dollars shipped in the lower 48, elsewhere plus additional shipping. I will accept Paypal at this email. Please see the definition of a Release Candidate is provide below for reference. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from so many customers who were pleased with the new CW keyer and the ease of upgrade. Given that there have been over 6,400 downloads to date, the number of reported bugs are minimal. We have already fixed a number of the more important ones and have two remaining known issues that we plan to fix before going to a general availability (GA) release. The two remaining issues we are working are as follows: 1. Some, but not all FLEX-5000 customers are experiencing random and intermittent TR or tuning receiver drop out. This is a firmware control timing problem that I previously reported on the reflectors. This problem does not exist in the 1.18.6 official release and appears to be timing related on some specific PC/FLEX-5000 combinations. This problem is being actively worked by the engineering team. 2. We have identified a potential cause of ALC overshoot in the DSP software and are working on a solution. This is mainly an issue for customers running legal limit amplifiers that require drive levels below full power (e.g. 50W or so) of the radio. We will keep you informed when we have resolved these remaining issues. We have developed a hardware modification to the 160m transmit filter section in response to a half dozen customer reports of a spur 2.4 kHz above the CW transmit frequency. This is only an issue if the station is running legal limit power CW on 160m with very large antenna arrays. In the legal limit case the CW spur would still be only on the order of 6 mW (we have measured approximately -53 to -57 dBc), which might be heard by other similar big gun stations with quiet antennas. On 160m SSB or AM it is really a non issue. For new production radios starting around December 2010 with Rev Q or higher HTRX boards, the modification is installed on all new radios. We only install this ECO into existing radios upon specific request because in our opinion it affects so very few people. If you fit this operating criteria, we are happy to install the ECO. I also have been using Flex for contesting (the 500A) as a single op for some time and find it to be a very capable contest radio once you learn the idiosyncrasies of setting it up with all the external software/hardware. One thing I will add is that from my perspective the focus issue was a real burden, that is until I got a hold of Beppes T-mate. Having it sit alongside the keyboard is just great. This allows me to use the VFO, RIT etc without losing focus of the logging software. I realise some will say it is sacrilege to have an external VFO but when you are logging a few thousand q's a weekend you need the least amount of distraction possible and in normal everyday operation I do not use it. In comparison I also run a FTDX5000 with a pan adapter and this is a great combination but in a contesting situation I find that the pan adapter is not used all that much as I do not do much SP and like you mentioned, most of the work is done on the logging programme. If you SP then it is IMHO streets in front of the K3 panadapter and as for the Flex panadapter, there is no equal. I definitely agree that in the future most stations will have a PC panadapter of some description (Flex is way ahead in this department). Surprised me that the new Kenwood does not have IF out. The next step for me is to have a complete separate computer setup for each radio as swapping radios and reconfiguring all the software every time I change rigs is a real PIA. Meanwhile I will continue to enjoy both styles of radio. Thanks Flex for the latest software update. I recently upgraded to 2.0.16 from the stable release and found it is a big improvement. Tried 2.0.8 and for some reason or another my system didn't like it so I reverted back to the stable release but this latest version works a treat and I don't know whether it is my imagination or not but everything seems to run smoother. I look forward for what's to come in the future. Regards Laurie VK7ZE PS In the real world, Flex filtering is still the best there is. -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Jack Haverty Sent: Monday, November 15, 2010 7:34 AM To: Drax Felton Cc: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Comparing Flex to K3 for contesting On Sun, 2010-11-14 at 12:47 -0500, Drax Felton wrote: Very interesting post. I wonder how the Flex compares against the almighty Elecraft K3. I've been contesting with the Flex-3000 for 18 months now, and like it a lot. I haven't used a K3 in any contest, but the K3 certainly seems to be the standard for serious contesters. Most of the contest stations seem to use a K3, often 2 or 3 of them, as well as more as spares. If you look at the posts on the 3830 contesting list, there's lots of discussions of stations and how people use them in contests. I've thought about getting a K3 for contesting - but I'm not a serious contester at this point, and maybe will never be one. Here's what I've learnedIMHO of course. In contesting, the Flex doesn't compete against the K3. You have to look at the whole station as it is used in contests. A serious contest station might have several K3s, many antennas and amps, switching gear, rotor controllers etc., and a software complement as well - Writelog or N1MM, Internet spotting support, and maybe even a CW Skimmer. A Flex-based contest station would have a similar complement of components. Even a simple contest station has several pieces of hardware and software. The comparison has to be between the total stations, not just between one of the components. The Flex panadapter is very cool - but contesters are now adding the Elecraft panadapter to provide similar functions. I's not nearly as good as the PowerSDR display, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a PC-based add-on K3 display that enables the use of standard widescreen LCD displays through the same K3 interface. The comments from contesters after they first use a K3 panadapter indicate that such a display will become standard for contest stations. Once you have experienced being able to see the contest, you can't survive blind mode anymore. In contesting, the primary station interface today is the computer, just like with the Flex. But the software that provides the user interface is the logger, e.g., N1MM or Writelog. These contest-optimized programs are highly tuned to contesting, and do far more than just logging. During contests, there's little need to actually use the knobs and buttons on the radio - i.e., either the K3 front panel or the PowerSDR screen. Everything is done through the logger. Many stations use multiple radios - SO2R or Single-Op-2-Radios, which are operated simultaneously in a highly coordinated fashion. Multi-op stations often have several such stations, all interconnected by a LAN, and coordinated by the software

There seems to be lots of suggestions for the BobSmeter. How about the Tmate thru DDUtil? I went through the whole process of changing to DDUtil and VSPManager and DXLabs only to find that I could not get Tmate to run and DXlabs was not to my liking, HRD and DDUtil don't have a great love affair, what a frustrating experience! Have ditched the whole lot again and reverted to previous set up and it now runs real well. Now I am back to running VSPE with PowerSDR, HDR, DM780, Skimmer, Tmate, Bobsmeter and N1MM all at the same time with no slow downs, hangs, latency or whatever you like to call it, still use the internet, email and every other programme I want - a happy marriage again after a week of turmoil. [Flexradio] Flex 5000A and WPX
Hello, Just a short note whilst it is still fresh in my mind(what's left of it). I have just completed nearly 2000 qso's as a single op the WPX contest with the Flex 5000A. I run a small contest previously just to make sure I was familiar with everything. To be fair I did not use the second receiver this time around as I had enough to contend with without it, the point and shoot screen opened up a whole new world for me. The receiver I simply cannot fault, as the say - bloody terrific... Transmit audio - bloody terrific. The downside, always has to be something - the most annoying detail was when I was running a pileup, logging one after the other at a rate 0f 250p/hr or better you don't remember some of the minor details - log the contact, someone comes up alongside creating a bit of noise, you grab the mouse and hit a narrower filter button, back to the keyboard and start typing - OOPs forgot to bring the mouse back and click on the logging programme again, the radiois taken off into the never never land because what you thought you typed into the logger was actually telling the radio to do something. This little detail is the same of course whether it's the filter, vox button, noise blanker or whatever. Now there is probably actually nothing at all that can be done about it and people will say you just have to be more careful. That's fine to say but I don't contest 7 days a week, so it is not second nature and it is one more step that takes time in a busy environment. Don't get me wrong either, I am not having a whinge. Maybe there is someone real smart out there that can fix it - as the control of the radio is software, one idea was to possibly have a contest mode where the radio is only in the background until you actually physically do an adjustment and then it reverts to the background automatically. I know that sounds back the front to what you would normally want - but in this case as opposed to normal operationI want the logger to be the main focus. I hope someone understands what I am saying and may have a suggestion or two.. All in all the radio performed flawlessly and gets the thumbs up. It's a keeper. Tnx 73 LaurieVK7ZE PS Neal, if you wish to arrange a sked on PSK one day, I would be happy to try on the long path with that sort of power. Have had SSB qso's with quite a few stations running 50W from indoor/attic antenna on the East coast of USA. When using the DIG modes on PowerSDR I have a terribly wait before it actually sends after keying and after it finishes sending a long wait before it returns to receive,. Obviously I have something set wrong and any suggestions to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Re: [Flexradio] VAC with N1MM?
Mack, I found that by using the computer soundcard as you would if you had a traditional rig hooked up that it works fine as long as you have the VAC and the VOX activated on PowerSDR at the same time. NO hardwiring needed. The only downside by using this method is that if you wish to use VOX normally then you have to remember to turn off VAC first. Have been using this method all week and it is working fine. This is a maintenance software release of PowerSDR 1.18.x and contains several critical bug fixes. It is recommended that you upgrade to PowerSDR v1.18.4 at your earliest convenience. You can download the PowerSDR v1.18.4 installation software using this URL: http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=312 It is recommended that you review the PowerSDR release notes prior to installing a new version of PowerSDR to make sure you have the proper versions of .NET, firmware and FLEX Firewire driver recommended for the release. In addition, a list of bug fixes included in the v1.18.4 release are listed in the release notes. The v1.18.4 release notes can be accessed from the Knowledge Center using this URL: http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50444.aspx Remember, it is always a best practice to allow PowerSDR to create a brand new database with each new release. Re: [Flexradio] FW: HRD and delays.
Jose, I am sorry but I beg to differ. DM780 will run quite ok as standalone without the logbook, it needs HRD to read frequencies and have radio control thats all. Logbook will also run as stand alone without HRD as long as you don't wish to have frequency readout/input and rig control. Myself and others I know have done this many times, in fact at times I intentionally run DM780 as standalone because then I have less latency problems, no automatic qrz lookup etc. Cheers Laurie/vk7ze -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of José Dumoulin Sent: Wednesday, 30 December 2009 8:54 AM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] FW: HRD and delays. You can have al facilities from DM780 without having to run HRD. Use Commander from DXlab website for CAT. Use DM780-DXL from DXlab website to make DM780 think it is connected to HRD. Take care ! In HRD LogbookRadio paneOptionsuncheck Automatically connect to HRD. Do this before running DM780 ! With this setup, no delay on PTT and very fast execution of CAT commands from DM780. Even if you set PTT control to HRD in DM780. At least for my SDR-1000 but I guess it would be OK for other FlexRadios. To all, I am watching this thread with very strong interest as SO2R was one of the main reasons I recently purchased this radio. From Flex website the FLEX-5000 fully software defined radio becomes a true SO2R solution in a single radio enclosure. Info on N1MM configurations has also been of interest. For some reason or another cannot get K9DUR to install correctly so VAC in N1MM would be a godsend. Thanks everyone for all the interesting information. Great group.
