I'm thinking about trying a 10Mhz Rubidium standard with my Flex 5000.

On eBay, there are many used FE-5680A units for sale. Look to be from China.

Anyone tried one? Will they work or are there disadvantages or issues I should

Just curious...anyone using the latest version of VAC. ?I used the 4.9 version
a long time because 4.10 was buggy with the Flex. ?I upgraded to 4.11 since the
consensus of the group was that it was fully functional. ?No problems here.
?Now that 4.12 is out I haven't heard anything on it. ?Maybe it doesn't have
any significant improvements or changes. ?I'm just usually in the habit of
keeping all my software up to date as long as it's proven to work consistently.

[Flexradio] 4.0 sortware regreat

2012-09-23 Thread MILLER, Tom
Ihave reached the point whit the latest version that a am sorry that I up
graded. Some timing issue in my computer now locks up the unit completely and
then tells me that I need to upgrade the firmware. When I see this I must
close everything and power down both the computer and radio. Then power up the
computer then the radio. Then is seems to work fine, well I guess I did
something to offend the fire wire hardware as it cannot be reconized during
start up. I have uninstalled every thing flex older versions etc. I may of
missed some of the firm ware removals but I do not thanik that is my present
problem. I suspect that once again I have blown up the firewire drivers. Now
whi9ch one I have no clue. I havae the radio grounded to the pc and the pc
grounded tp the power supply. I have a spare fw card here someware but I
cannot seen to guess what safe location I legft it in. I also failed the last
time the 5000 was in for repairs to get spair chips so I could install them
here without incuring the expense of sending the 5000 back to austin.
I was having a nice qso with KF5DRR Shorthy when Iwent to check on some thing
on the internet and that locked it up. Before Iwould have just gotton so
distortion and with a simple stop restart of PSDR all this would have been
right in the world. Now it has goo completely away. I have a 5 pound hammer
handy and if it were not for the cost of the equipment it would have become a
pile of scrape metel this morning.
Well and return for the flex to the factory and an express order of a dozen of
so TI chip Set fire cards is in order-.
I guess i need to contact my doctor about a heavyduty supply of ZAnnax 20MG
pills might be in order to prevent damage from my incompitance. Al thought the
is a calmming effect with just letting it out on the keyboard and transfering
it to the readers.

[Flexradio] Front Back Top/Bottom

2012-05-18 Thread MILLER, Tom
I agree that the 6000 is shown backwards. At least it is not upside also like
the 5000. The Printing on my 5000 is upside down (not really but having the
coax connectors at the top of the radio makes switching antennas around much
easier).
My radio sits on my shelf facing left and the bottom is up.
The front panel of the 6000 could have the switch etc stay there for regular
folks and an extra set on the back for us not normal persons.
How can I convince my wife that I need to spend 7000 bucks on a radio. Maybe I
can convince my boss it is something we need for work. Hmmm

[Flexradio] Display

2012-01-10 Thread MILLER, Tom
Is there any plans to allow for the rearrangement of the PowerSDR screen. I
would like to see the two meters (RX1 and RX2)on the top part of the screen so
that I can view both at the same time. For example: VFO A, RX 1 meter, VFO
Steps, RX 2 meter, VFO B I guess the way the screen is setup now so there is no
difference in the upper part when going between 1 rx and 2 rx's. I always run
with both receivers so this would not matter.

It would be nice to be able to select and drag the boxes around. I guess this
is like having the case upside down (coax connectors on bottom not in the way)
and the back facing out (hard to put the earphone plug in the mick jack).

I guess I will dream on.

I saw a posting not long ago from a guy who hung a wire antenna by using a
golf ball with some type of small turnbuckle driven through to hold a
fishing line. Today, I tried using a golf ball and a cotter pin that I
bought from Home Depot. I used a C-clamp vice-grip to hold the ball as I
drilled a hole through the center. The cotter pin fit perfectly and was
nearly flush with the golf ball on both sides. I bought a couple hundred
yard roll of fishing line and pulled about 100 feet onto the ground, cut it
from the roll and tied it to the cotter pin. I'm not a great athlete but I
was able to zing the golf ball about 40' up into a willow tree and pull my
rope through.

I've been at my present QTH for about two months and my temporary antenna
had been a single band 40 meter end fed dipole at 20' but now I have a 2
band end fed (Par Electronics EF-20/40) at 40'. This is a nice improvement
and it was much cheaper using a golf ball than buying a super-de-duper,
tennis-ball rocket launching contraption to accomplish the same thing.
Admittedly, the super-de-duper tennis ball rocket launching contraption can
get a line 100' into a tree but if your needs are more modest, I recommend a
golf ball, a cotter pin and hand launching the golf ball. It works in some
fairly challenging situations.

Now the outer covers of the ear muffs are disintegrating. If anyone

1. How did you get the old ones off and put the new ones on?
2. What kind of replacement muffs did you use

I can't speak exactly to the Yamaha's but having serviced a bunch of Sennheiser
HMD-25's?and Beyer DT 190's and 290's, the ear pads USUALLY are kept in place
by
the elasticity of the plastic they are made of.??In other words, on both the
Sennheisers and Beyers there is a plastic skirt around the back of the padded
area that is simply stretched over the hard plastic housing of the ear cup
which
holds the actual driver.? You just grab it on one side stretch that side off
the
housing and work your way around removing it. In the words of the old saw,

[Flexradio] Latency

2011-02-25 Thread MILLER, Tom
In fooling around with the new version of PowerSDR 2.0.19 RCV1 using XP, I
noticed an odd behavior when running rcv a on UCW and rcv b on LCW (I like to
notes when the two signals are off frequency slightly) I noticed phase shifting
between the two receivers. I am running a HB 40/80 dipole at 30' and a
Butternut mounted to the fence 60' away. I think the phase shifting is caused
by the signals arriving at different times, but there seemed to be an almost
echo (or delay) when the signals came to the ears. Rather interesting
listening to 25WPM code (not coping that fast) and would imagine it might odd
at higher speeds. Is there enough latency to produce the echo in processing
time between the two receivers.
Sorry I cannot remember the exact processor but it is dual core 3.6GB xenon
with 2GB ram.
I rathered enjoyed the phasing and the echo as it made for a pleasing sound on
the cw.

Spoiled by the fantastic Flex 5000A now for almost 2 years. The Icom ProII now
is the late night bedroom receiver so when the fall asleep I can listen and not
bother her but still be in bed.
I thought that when I brought the PROII it was going to be the radio I would
run for years, but alias spinning the dial has been replaced by a cheap 2
button mouse and thumb wheel. Lots of radio stations I would never heard on
the old icom. After 40 or so years of Ham Radio I was getting bored and since I
purchased the Flex it is hard for me to stay out of the radio room.

Just need to add in the below 1.8 filtering so I can listen to MF and LF maybe
a little VLF? I would like to try to hear KSM on 500KHz on Saturday but the
BCI is just way too strong. Maybe we get a couple of assignments close to
there. That would be fun. I have heard only a couple of the close stations
running under the ARRL license, but that was with the pro.

Thanks Flex and everybody else for helping make one of the best radios
(software defined or not) I have ever seen

[Flexradio] W1sqlpsk and Hamscope

2010-10-17 Thread MILLER, Tom
Problem with W1sqlpsk is the soundcard selection, I must not understand how to
do that using VAC, the problem with Hamscope is that it does not decode very
well. I have used it with varying success in decoding the weather sent by KSM
on CW. Signals that are nice and strong seem to decode as if they were noisy.
I have changed levels many times and have used the narrow and AFC options
also. I try to keep the signal level in the middle of the window.

[Flexradio] fixed filter bandwidths

2010-04-19 Thread MILLER, Tom
Now that I figured out the easy way of getting CW to come out of the radio with
two different tones (although the difference I can only change by using the CW
pitch (which changes both) by using the on R2 CWL and R1 CWU. But I would like
to increase the band widths without having to use the VAR 1 or Var 2 and having
to adjust them each time I change modes.
Is there a way to modify one of the exsisting bandwidths (I really do not need
7 fixed band widths although they are very nice) so that I can keep for CW a BW
of say 1.2kHz?

[Flexradio] ERBTEC 300w ss AMPS

2009-12-31 Thread MILLER, Tom
I picked up some ERBTEK P/N 86-0113-2502 amp boards. Before hacking them so I
can use them as amplifiers, I was wondering if someone had figured out how to
bias the transistors easly? I talked to an engineer there a while back was
told that the transistor were biased using and external (to the board) cpu to
determine the bias requirement before the board was used.
The board has a CA2820 broad band amp (catv) 400MW driving a pair of MRF134
driving a pair of MRF148 and finnaly driving a pair of MRF150.
I was thinking of putting 4 of these boards together and I thing I could get
1kw out. ( I know that I would have to add band pass filters)
Any thoughts bofore I start hacking?
Tom
The reason I ask the question here is for the SDR-1000 had low power out.
I will share the answers to those who want the info.

Re: [Flexradio] Is Betty Pretty or Not?

2009-11-28 Thread MILLER, Tom
I would like the ability to move each control to any place on the screen. To
be able to modify the placement of controls/displays for the type of operation
I am doing at the moment would be very helpful.
For example if I am testing antennas to have both s meters next to each other
would great so I would not get eye strain trying to read the meters at the same
time.
Space inbetween the two panadaptors with the band box for both displays so I
can change bands on the 2nd receiver easier.
And the other missing function is having some memories with out having to use
another program.
I like coke better than pepsi and dr pepper is in a different class altogether.

watercolor we had purchased for about the cost of three
Flex5000A's. He told me that I had been seriously taken advantage
of! With great difficulty I had to keep a straight face. And we
won't get into the subject of the grand piano! Still, I know that
at least half of the people I see on the street would never purchase
things like that even if the cost was not a consideration. While
it may be difficult for many Flexers to accept, the appearance of
something is a very important consideration when thinking about
pride of ownership. How many of the automobile ads you see on TV
even mention details of performance? But they do mention
style. You really can't argue one position or the other. It's
very much like prefering Coke or Pepsi!

I prefer Dr Pepper, choice is a good thing.

As has been mentioned before the old software took a lot of extra
PC power but that is being remedied. Another issue to consider is
many men are partially color blind, I'm not but I can understand
that having the ability to change the colors, a person could adjust
them to make the display easily seen to them.

The last example that Beppe showed as his favorite is very easy on
the eyes for me, but the change I would like is to make would be to
make the controls more symmetrical, common controls in the center,
the respective individual controls for the receivers on the right and
left. The two receiver meters close to each other at the top.

We are all a little different.

Maybe if those who are interested in gathering for a net should send out a QST
to this list indicating where and when. Then it should evolve into a net. I
personally don't think limiting it to just one day a week for an informal is
the best idea since not everyone who would like to participate might be

Re: [Flexradio] UNSUPPORTED... WHY BOTHER?

2009-08-07 Thread MILLER, Tom
I have installed Flex radio on three computers. The first two were older
slower computers and I did not do much to deal with issues to help with running
Flex at 192 with both receivers going. I did by a nice Dual Core box which
suits the Flex just fine, without doing anything.

However my point is that Flex sells the 5000C with a computer built in and
there are no issues with that. If you want the cheap route then you may have
problems/issues that need to be dealt with. (kinda like a crap shoot) You then
can pretend it is a regular box radio and cable to your present computer and do
your digital thing the you do now.

I was getting bored with Ham Radio recently (before I bought the FLex) and find
now my wife is upset with me as I spend far too much time playing with the
Flex. It is really cool now to know that those carriers that sweep the band
are the ionospheric scanners that determine that MUF. I can click follow them
up in frequency and see that they turn off when passing the WWV frequencies.
The display is better for the displayed (maybe I can connect to the IF out on
the analyzer hmmm) bandwidth than my fancy HP spectrum analyzer (minus the
frequency range). I can watch most the entire band for activity and plug in
CW Skimmer (run the program) and see who is on CW. See all the beacons on six
and see the calls displayed. Slick

I have a two button mouse with a thumb wheel, I no longer have to hold my hand
up or reach up to adjust the frequency. I have 2 (tiny compared to some) 19
monitors connected, I can have the main Flex screen up on one and have the ATU
and Antenna displays on the other with the KST2Me chat page in the background.
I can even operate the radio without my glasses on, it is hell when you get
older.

I really loved my ProII but the one the ham shack is no longer connected.
If you feel that setting up an unknown computer is too much effort, then buy
the 5000C.

I hover the mouse pointer over the digit in the

can jump in 10 KHz, 100 KHz, 1 MHz steps. No
spinning needed.

Re: [Flexradio] OT

2009-06-23 Thread MILLER, Tom
I have a TI lugable PC with TI's version of VGA, but alas the FAT file is hosed
and will not boot,
I had access to 3 or 4 for FD one year and hand entered a logging program for a
hand book (not sure where) that was in basic took a lot of troubleshooting to
find all my typos.

Re: [Flexradio] F5K, first operations and 6M test

2009-06-15 Thread MILLER, Tom
I concur on locking the panadaptor (even if it means having some blanked out
trace). My brain has problems with tracking signal on the panadaptor when
changing freqs, although the more I used it the less the problem was. AC5TM

Subject: [Flexradio] F5K, first operations and 6M test

OK, still in my learning curve here. I had only made a handful of contacts
on my 5K prior to the contest. Some questions/observations from this weekend.

I found ANF almost completely ineffective in the default position. I tried
playing with the adjustments and couldn't find anything usable. Anyone
have settings that work?
My Shuttlepro2 does not tune the VFO for RX2. If I click on the RX2
panadapter with the mouse, I can wheel scroll with the mouse, but nothing
from the SP. Works fine with RX1.
The S-meter for RX2 is 26db higher than RX1. The pan adapters for both
show a noise floor of ~-140dbm. Using an ARR preamp on the RX1 link. RX2
is using RX1 tap.
During the contest I switched live from 192KHz to 96KHz so I could use both
receivers (I have a slower PC). I also changed the buffer settings in the
firewire driver and PWRSDR live. Is this acceptable to do? The reason I
ask is that later in the contest I noticed severe image problems. Powering
down the 5K and rebooting the computer resolved the problem.

And for the final question, how does one click tune signals that are not
visible? I could not find a setting of the waterfall and agc that would
show the weakest signals unless I reduced the pan adapter to the tightest
settings (which defeats the advantage of the panadapter. I found myself
using the ShuttlePro more than the mouse as I was finding more stations
using conventional tuning. These signals were perfectly readable, but
barely visible on the waterfall.Click-tine was great for the stronger
signals.

A couple of comments:
Running the logging program on a separate computer from the PWRSDR radio,
and two other computers for WSJT on the flex and a separate 2m radio made
for a lot of confusion and fumbling. Still have a lot to do to improve my
setup (better computer so that I can integrate the digi programs and PWRSDR).
I agree with NU8I's comments on the need to be able to lock the
panadapter. I would also like to see separate waterfalls for RX2.

[Flexradio] Flex-5000

2009-06-14 Thread MILLER, Tom
I the box thru the paces over the weekend, the ease of operation and the
panadptor make it a winer. The receiver is a little hard of hearing, but the
audio processing made ther difference.
I had some high Q rates on sat and still was able to pick some off using the
second receive.
Nothing but great audIo reports.
Only complaint is the auto tunner it sometimes takes three atemps to get the
antenna to give good matches.
This is on badly missed antennas

Re: [Flexradio] Possibly OT: Any routers that aren't noisy?

2009-06-03 Thread MILLER, Tom
See what voltage the router runs off, if 12V then hook up to radio power supply
if not try finding a different power supply and try that. The new wall warts
are switchers and are a BIG HF noise problem.

Subject: [Flexradio] Possibly OT: Any routers that aren't noisy?

I see reports of different wireless (802.11N) routers being noisy, and I
was curious if anyone on the list had found one that actually *wasn't* ?

Among others I've tried, my current one is a D-Link DIR-655 . It works
very well in most other respects, but is the noise source from hell on HF.

FWIW, I've used liberal amounts of mix-43 ferrite on both power and
Ethernet cables and while the treatment has reduced the noise by
probably 20db, it's still 20-30db more than I can stand.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim, N7CXI

Re: [Flexradio] FLEX5000 ATU issue

2009-05-29 Thread MILLER, Tom
I am also having problems with ATU. It takes a while (few seconds to tune) and
then either times out or states that no match can be found. But when I transmit
the fwd power is around 10 watts and 1 or less reflected and raising drive so
the power reads 60 or more watts the reflected reads 1 or 2 watts (or less
after adjusting the BigIR). The SWR meter position does not change from
0.0:1.1. However sometimes the radio does say that the antenna did tune
properly.
Any suggestions?

Subject: [Flexradio] FLEX3000 Tune Tx issue

HI,

My first steps with my new flex3000 were fine, no problem at all to
install the software and make it run fine on Rx on a VISTA Athlon x2
4400 computer.
Now, I am encountering a big issue on Txing :
tests on a dummy load when pressing the button tune are providing a
'regular' 10w (setup for tune is 10w)
tests on a real antenna (Steppir BigIr) show high VSWR and 30/35w out
when depressing the tune button (tests were made on 30 and 20m and the
antenna ROS was checked with a ROS and a miniVNA at less than 1:5/1)
All inputs are muted and nothing is connected to the Mic connector, VAC
has been disabled for the tests , tests on LSB or FM lead to the same
results.

What I am doing wrong ?

[Flexradio] Updates

OK, I got my 5K last week and I have it working. Why can I not select

software (not sure and just do not want to load anything)?

[Flexradio] New update

2009-05-23 Thread MILLER, Tom
I have had time this morning to hookup and rum my new 5000 on my lap top
computer. Toshiba Satellite Pentium (R) 3.46Ghz with 1.37GB ram, internal Fire
wire interface. Works good does not like the 192K sample rate locks up every
once in a while. Running 96K smaple rate with 512 buffer I have done nothing to
the computer to improve the operation. Just loaded the software and plugged
the unit in.
The hardest part is trying to remember where all the controls for all the
features are, I guess that is CRS.

[Flexradio] Flex-5000 first timer

2009-05-21 Thread MILLER, Tom
Received my Flex-5000 yesterday. I had planned to take all last night to get
it setup (or at least attempt) and spend some quality time playing with it as
my wife had left town on a trio for two weeks, but alas it was not to be. She
had a fall at DFW after flying from New Orleans (our home QTH). The took here
to the hosiptal and I glad she is ok with some bumps and brusies. So I had to
drive over to Dallas to pick her up and take her back home as she cannot fly
for a few days.
There is a good side to this. I did get a chance to spend one hour with the
unit. I loaded the software following the quick start book. The unit started
right. It is not the best computer only a D with 1.5GHz ram and running
MacAffe. The radio worked on the first try. Yes it does lock up if I try to
do too much at one time. If I kill Mac and increase the RAM I suspect that
will solve those issues. One hour of time is not really a good sample of how
it works but the GUI is really fun to use. The point and shoot is really fun
to use. Now I hope I have time this weekend to really get to try it out fully
and fix the issues I have.
I have been watching the posts since I joined and love the most of the issues
posted.
Thanks for all the support given unknowingly over the past week.
