Invest in some mix 31 chokes and add them at the antenna feed point, at the
radio and on the FireWire cable.

Reviewing this will help you out.

I did some tests with my vna and it confirmed that those chokes will do the

Re: [Flexradio] Microphone Recommendation?

I am happy to hear that everyone is learning something about transmitted audio.
It can be a can or worms dicussion. :)

I just purchased a Koss headset with a boom mic for about $30. I love the
headset, but the mic audio is really muddy. I don't have it in front of me,
but I think it was called a UB40.

Fortunately, I have a couple Heil Elements that I will use as a replacement.
Too bad you can't just buy elements anymore. I used my ProSet for CQWW, and it
was really starting to annoy me after about 3 hours of the contest. It seems
to be squeezing my head.

The Flex does allow for some amazing opportunities. Good luck on Sweepstakes

I personally have a PR40 for my Flex5K. I was instructed to use the TX EQ and
compander to tailor the audio on the 5K. I have been told that my audio was
distorted with the TX EQ and compander. The audio on the PR40 seems very
pleasant without adding any external tailoring, as I have been told by
friends in my local roundtable weekly ragchew.

I purchased the PR40 to help reduce my RF ingress issues with my 5K. It did
help, but I have been also told that the audio in my 5K is the same with my
expensive PR40 than a mainstream Yaesu microphone that I was using before
 purchasing the PR40.

Yes, the Heil PR40 looks nice, it has great specifications, but I would
challenge people to put on different microphones, (if you have access to
them) and compare the audio between the microphones. You might just save
yourself a bunch of money, as a more inexpensive microphone might just serve
 your purpose.

My two cents from my experience.

Mike, I played the sounds on the Heil site url you supplied. I sort of agree

available mikes (your Swiss Army knife approach, I think) with or without
different down stream eq's. My claim is that once you have electronically
captured an accurate representation of the op's voice this representation
can be electronically manipulated to get the result of any existing mike or
mike to come along in the future. This is my use of Swiss Army knife, eq
(and or other electronic manipulation) to get whatever characteristic(s)
desired. The required mike is one that can accurately capture a
representation of the op's voice. Once that is achieved any effect possible
to achieve by means of other microphones can be duplicated with electronic
processing of the accurate signal from the Hi-Fi mike.

Thanks again for the URL to the recorded sounds. That audio clip tends to
make my case for me, a good mike, many possible results, a Swiss Army knife
of different results available through processing.
The Heil PR 40 may not be the highest of Hi-Fi mikes but it is sufficient
for my purposes and apparently for a bunch of Flexers. Maybe not perfect,
 but good enough.

I hope to catch your melodious tones on the HF bands.

I was on the phone with Bob from Balun Designs. He suggested a dual core

You haven't mentioned anything about ground buses yet? Do you have you in

Why do you think that you have to rewrite your microphone? What type of mic is
it? Can you try another mic? Also, disconnect anything from the radio that
you are currently not using?

Is the computer ground strapped to the radio? Is the radio power supply
plugged into the same power bar as the computer?

Start simplifying things first and then add more bits.

Don't blame the radio as many others have great success. We just need to sort

I initially had some RF ingress issues, but I put ferrites on all
audio and power lines, as well as microphone cables. I have no
issues now and work the bands up to 70cm with no reports of any RF
on my signal. I have some external digital processors, BHI, that I
use as well, so there are lots of audio cables external to the
Flex. I also use the Tokyo Hy-power 2m amplifier without RF issues.

My main issue was with the fan noise of the VU5K, but I found by
carefully balancing the audio and using the DExp control that I
could keep the background noise out of my transmitted signal and I
no longer get audio reports asking about the noise in the
background. Having the panadapter when doing weak signal work is
really nice, as these can be so easily missed.

Unfortunately, no wide-range transverters exist, or if they do they're

Re: [Flexradio] Keyer out

2011-11-24 Thread Mike va3mw
You can measure them with a voltmeter.

Volts for open circuit and amperage for closed.

Then you will know for sure, although I'm not really sure why you are asking.

Re: [Flexradio] Worst case scenario

Lol Neal

I thought crap like that only happens to me!

Why is it we always go for the worst outcome first?

I have been building and testing a computer today and everything was going
smoothly until it just turned off. Would not power up no matter what!

So, I unplug everything from the motherboard and bring out the PSU tester,
which shows a bad power supply. So, I plug in the bench PSU and try the
computer, no luck. So I put the power supply tester on the bench power
 supply and it shows dead.

This is too much stuff dead but my first suspicion is that the PSU tester
isn't good so I throw it away and look for my spare one (not found).

Then I look down and see the power cord is not fully plugged in. AHA!

So I unplug the bench PSU and get the PSU tester out of the trash. Plug
the original PSU back in, hit the power button and nothing happens! So I
plug the PSU tester into the original PSU and still no reading. Well, maybe
the original PSU really did die!

So I am looking in inventory for a replacement PSU and see I have none
available (the bench PSU is very underpowered for anything but testing).
But, I figured, at least confirm the motherboard isn't dead so I plug in
the bench PSU and hit the power button, nothing.

Usually at this stage its a sign I need to walk away because frustration
will start to blind me. So I push back my chair to leave and then see the
power cord for the power outlet on my test bench has worked its way out of
 the power socket.

Why didn't I check that at the beginning and save myself an hour of
frustration and picking my PSU tester out of trash twice???

At least its up and working normally again!

Re: [Flexradio] Band data from a Flex-5000 to the Elecraft KPA500 amp?

2011-06-22 Thread Mike va3mw
Why not use the SGC 500 if you only need 500 watts?

I was disappointed that the Flex series of radios did not follow the
SDR-1000 in having a direct output for band data signals. My SDR-1000 is
directly connected to a Quadra and can bandswitch it independently of
DDutil, etc. My 5000a requires a parallel port and DDutil to do the same.

It appears that Flexradio had intended to make an interface unit for the
5000a/3000 that would have plugged in to the flexport (name?) and allowed
them to do this, but it must have fallen through the cracks.

Since band data is produced by PowerSDR and not by the radio hardware it
makes sense to have the band data come from the computer. There is no
standard for outputing band data to devices. The closest thing I have found
is the Kenwood CAT command set used by Kenwood, Flex, Elecraft, and others.
Some older radios use analog voltages (older ICOM and Yaesu radios) and some
also use BCD (binary parallel). Still, serial is the most flexible and the
 most compatible.

I would be surprised if the KPA500 does not accept the Kenwood CAT commands
to set band as that is what the K2 and K3 normally generate through their
serial ports. It appears that you can connect to RS-232 connector #8 on the
back of the KPA500 for this. (Probably, I am guessing but I have been able
to control other Elecraft devices from the computer this way and they do
suggest that it can be controlled from a Kenwood radio via this connector.)
If that is the case then you just need a serial connection from the computer
running PowerSDR and the KPA500. If you wish to use digital mode programs
like fldigi or Ham Radio Deluxe you will need to use DDutil to repeat the
 CAT data to the KPA500.
