[Flexradio] Receiver sensitivity of the SDR1000

2007-02-18 Thread Stephen Victor
Hi. I am a complete newby to SDR, and am considering purchasing an SDR1000.
When reading the specifications, I have noticed that the MDS is -130 dBM, which
seems to pale in comparison to other popular rigs such as the IC756proIII,
Orion2 and K2. For anyone who has used these other rigs, do the numbers
translate into a real disadvantage in sensitivity, or they just numbers?
Also- is receiver MDS something that can be improved with later editions of
software?
Many thanks and 73
Steve WA2DTW

Re: [Flexradio] Receiver sensitivity was "deaf receiver"

2007-02-03 Thread Lee A Crocker
I had a situation in my early SDR where the diode
protection across the preamp was not present. I
managed to blow out the preamp from a strong RF field
in my multi transmitter station. My RX was deaf to
say the least. The fix was easy put in a new amp and
add the diodes. So check to see if the diode
protection is present. My other SDR had the diodes
and exposure to similar RF fields has caused no
problem

Ross,

It should be -107 dBm. Mine fluctuates around -107 to -108.

I appear to have made the 1 watt receiver operate.

Can someone tell me please, using the 1microvolt output on an XG1 what db
reading one could expect
at the moment using the panadaptor on avg, the signal peak is 32db above the
noise.

what sensitivity should I be looking for.

Thanks and best wishes to all Flexers

Re: [Flexradio] Receiver Sensitivity

2005-09-26 Thread Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio

Bob,

Depending on the signal source, you may
not hear an audible difference between the various Preamp modes because the AGC is
normalizing the audio to roughly the same levels.  Note that the software compensates for
the various Preamp modes by adjusting the display and s-meter in order to
accurately reflect the signal as seen by the antenna.

Generally, the best way to test receiver
sensitivity is to do a level calibration (requires a known level signal source)
and then check the signal level at 14.0MHz in 500Hz with no signal present,
Preamp on High.  Depending on which
preamplifier you are using, you should get something in the -130 to -127 range.  If you
see something much higher than that, let us know.

Is there a simple way to confirm receiver
sensitivity?

My receiver front end seems to have lost
sensitivity;

I don't hear any change when switching
Preamp from "Off" to "Low."  There is a slight
change from "off" to "Med."  There is an
very slight increase from "Med" to "High."
However, "High" is down significantly from comparison with my
FT-1000D (about 3-4 S units).  The difference many times between hearing
and not hearing.

It's been my habit to disconnect the
antenna when not using the radio.  To trouble shoot, I've changed the
entire antenna input (changes coax and switches / exchanged connections with
the FT-1000D) line-up to the SDR with no change.  My guess is the receiver
front end (Preamp) is out.

Using PowerSDR V1.4.5, Computer -
Gateway 3.2 GHz with Delta-44

Thanks,

Bob

The High Preamp
initialization was an issue before the Beta 1.4.5 Preview 1.  This should not be an issue going
forward.

John,

I Tried different versions of PowerSDR...
no difference in receiver sensitivity.  SDR runs several S-units behind
the FT-1000D.

Now that I think back several weeks ago,
when turning on the SDR, if the Preamp was in the "High" position, I
had to first turn it to the "Mid" or lower position before I would
hear anything from the radio.  I thought it was a software
thing...  It doesn't do it now.

Bob,

I can confirm Willi's advice. I had the same problem. My solution was the
USB to PIO adapter. You may possibly try to increase the LPT delay, if you
don't want to use the adapter.

Hi Bob,

I had once problems with reduced sensivity. Make sure that you can hear a
distinct relay click each time when you step through the positions of the
preamplifier from off to high gain and back. Missing relay clicks indicate
that you may have a problem with the parallel port connection.
