Brilliant! Well done! While many argue from opinion, you demonstrate.

But I would like to make one point here -- that it doesn't matter whether
the radio is an SDR, hybrid, or pure analog, if you remove unwanted signals
before they get to the active stages, the receiver will work better.
Period. So, if you are dealing with strong, unwanted signals, you should
remove them in order for the receiver to perform its best. Some sort of
input filtering (preselection) is advantageous.

A Google search for "longwave converter" will turn up many sites selling
converters. Many of them are far less expensive than the Heroes
converter and have received good reviews.

I too have considered their VLF converter, but after experiencing the rather
broad front end of the 5K in that part of the spectrum, I'm cautiously not
expecting too much. I contacted Heros and they admitted that you might have
issues if you live in areas near broadcast stations.

It is very useful if you have a lot of near by strong signal

interference causing intermod mixing on the ham bands. It is more

useful on the FLEX-1500 and FLEX-3000 as they do not have individual ham

band filtering like the FLEX-5000 does.

2013-01-13 Thread Ken Alexander
The front end of the 5K isn't an issue if you are using a receive
converter. The front end of the converter is what you have to be
concerned about, specifically, it would be best if the converter had
it's own low pass filter to prevent overload from local mediumwave stations.

The converter output is in the 3.5 to 4 MHz or the 4 to 4.5 MHz
bands...where the 5K has it's own filters.

I did promise a while back that I'd put a video up for it or at least in my
case the "Heros SCR Preselector-CAT". Since I use one with a Flex-5K I can
vouch that if you're using tuned antennas there really shouldn't be a need
for one. If however you are using nonresonant antennas or in proximity to a
transmitting station then you might be surprised at the improvements that
can be had. With the greatest of respect to Tim's comment I don't consider
Taiwan's Premier radio station to be very close to me in the UK however it
is the station which causes me the greatest problem! Or at least it did
until I got the Heros Preselector. And just to be clear, the incoming,
coaxial cable has two line isolators so there is negligible RF getting back
into the shack (Tested with spectrum analyser and current probe).

I have just managed to put the video up tonight and it can be found at

Tim,

Thank you. As I own a 5000a and thanks to your answer, I guess that it is
one accessory I do not need for my ham shack.

Thank you.

It is very useful if you have a lot of near by strong signal interference
causing intermod mixing on the ham bands. It is more useful on the
FLEX-1500 and FLEX-3000 as they do not have individual ham band filtering
like the FLEX-5000 does.
