I did get an email from the ionosnode folks in Boulder:

---
Dave,

We are indeed operating two ionosondes at our facility on Broadway, in
Boulder. I will look over your plots. As a favor, would you attempt to
time stamp the phenomena for me?

One of our older radars is initiating a sweep at these 15 minute intervals
00, 15, 30, 45 of each hour.
Our second radar is initiating a sweep at these 15 minute intervals 05, 20,
35, 50 of each hour.

Each broadcast sweep takes ~ 3 minutes.

Regards,

Rob

Great, let us know what happens. If it's not local, it might be an ionosonde
station. Sure looks and sounds like one, but the interval's too short.
However, if it's a local, low power test, they might be changing the
intervals from the norm.

While I agree that it makes more sense that it would be something like a
switching power supply, but the signal is strongest when connected to my
outdoor antenna +20 or so. I've done indoor sniffing with a loop antenna and
I barely pick up the signal if at all.

We're on 2 acres and the closest neighbor to the antenna is 300 or 400 feet
away.

I'm gonna keep plugging along ..

The folks at NOAA as well as several other local Amateurs I've been in
contact with have been very impressed with the Flex 5000 Panadapter and
Waterfall display.

Shoot -- ran 5000 from battery operated notebook, it's not the PC's or

A correction on the repeating pattern, it's every 80Hz or so, the 170Khz
repeating was the 2nd Harmonic.

Re: [Flexradio] 40m qrm with harmonics

2008-11-29 Thread David Beumer WA3FDB
Actually it's multiples of 80Hz or so.. The harmonics are a multiple of 170.

That being said, I do have a Netgear managed switch that I will check out.

Thanks

You may be on to something.. I have since found the same pattern at
around 5 Mhz with harmonics in 30m .
I have also found they are in multiples about every 170Khz or so ..
 They
swoosh through every 15 seconds or so.

Mulitples of 170KHz? I have that. It turned out to be my Linksys managed
ethernet switch.

An ethernet switch could be the culprit. My next guesses would be be either
an internet cable modem or a switching power supply. David, how close are
you to Boulder? There is a new digital ionosonde station in Boulder, with a
4Kw amplifier, undergoing testing as of November 22, 2008. It's a VIPIR,
Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar installation.

[Flexradio] 40m QRM

2008-11-28 Thread David Beumer W0DHB
Folks

I'm trying to track down the source of some nasty QRM that appears as an
4khz wide carrier that meanders through 40m with 2nd ,3rd and 4th harmonics
on 20, 15 and 10. I've got a screen shot of waterfalls of 40m (Top) and
20m(bottom) showing the signal at URL: www.wa3fdb.net/40mQRM.htm

I'd appreciate any clues as to what it is .. I don't believe it is anything
internal to the 5000A.

It is strong enough on 20 m that it prevents digital mode reception.

I'm located about 40 miles NNW of Denver, grid DN70kc .

I'm also checking with folks in a 10 mile radius or so to see if they can
hear and/or see it.

Thanks

Dave - W0DHB

David,
If you are using any UPS equipment or any other switched mode power
supplies, try to switch them off.
