[Flexradio] NR Settings

2013-04-22 Thread Ted Trostle
T
he settings I use on my Flex 3000 are Taps 58, Delay 8, Gain 10, Leaks 1
.
Your mileage may vary depending on the quality of the external speaker or
headset used. I have used these settings since v.2.1.2

It is very true that one can encounter many kinds of noise on the various
bands, but for the most part what I am trying to eliminate, or at least reduce,
is the background hiss to bring out the signal from the noise. The hiss is
relatively constant and can be lowered by using some kind of sampling and
subtraction algorithm. The BHI does this successfully and can make weak
signals much more readable. I would think that this should be achievable in
the PowerSDR software as well with a little bit of further refining.

I for one have no intention of fiddling with every signal I encounter setting
taps and leakage, delay, etc. I work mostly weak signal VHF and UHF and as you
know, signals can come and go very quickly depending on the changing
propagation conditions. There is really not time to be adjusting this and that
to tune in a signal.

My bottom line is, if BHI have been relatively successful in this regard,
then the Flex should be able to do likewise, especially so, considering all the
other wonderful things they have done in software defined radio.

2013-04-21 Thread W8BYA
Hi there Terry. Thank you very much for jumping in on this topic. So far I am
with you in every way. I have been given several different opinions on values
to use and will try them out soon. ref the external DSP unit, I was kind of
hoping that the Flex would be able to perform any kind of DSP needed to
accomplish the required NR. But, in all fairness, even my ole FT-1000 MP NR
really stinks. I have yet to find one time where I thought it made the signal
easier to copy, IMO. TU agn es 73.

  Hi Gedas

I have tried just about every combination of the NR parameters and have only
succeeded in creating a more distorted and basically unlistenable sound.
Reducing AGC-T is much more effective in reducing noise, but you also lose some
sensitivity. With all the other sophisticated capabilities of the PowerSDR
software, the NR is surely one of the more disappointing features. With the
signal in the digital domain the software should be capable of much better
noise reduction than is presently available.

I have had much better luck with post rig processing, using a BHI Neim1031
Mark II processor. These units are made in the UK.
http://www.bhi-ltd.com/index.php/products/noise-cancellation-products/noise-cancelling-in-line-modules/neim1031-mkii.html?view=item&layout=item
This unit connects to the audio output of the Flex and is very successful in
reducing background noise. It has 8 stepwise levels of noise reduction and a
built in amplifier that is very effective. This same unit is available in the
US through GAP Antennas and known as "Hear It"
http://www.gapantenna.com/hearit_inline.htm This is the same unit as the BHI
but with the controls oriented horizontally rather than vertically. It is a
very effective unit especially for weak signal work.

The PowerSDR Console is a bit cluttered but it would be nice if one could
adjust the settings on the fly while listening to the noise by using a set of
sliders. One could then save these settings into memory to be recalled whenever
the offending noise is present...

Re: [Flexradio] NR Settings

2013-04-21 Thread Terry Maurice

Hi Gedas

I have tried just about every combination of the NR parameters and have
only succeeded in creating a more distorted and basically unlistenable
sound. Reducing AGC-T is much more effective in reducing noise, but you
also lose some sensitivity. With all the other sophisticated
capabilities of the PowerSDR software, the NR is surely one of the more
disappointing features. With the signal in the digital domain the
software should be capable of much better noise reduction than is
presently available.

I have had much better luck with post rig processing, using a BHI
Neim1031 Mark II processor. These units are made in the UK.
http://www.bhi-ltd.com/index.php/products/noise-cancellation-products/noise-cancelling-in-line-modules/neim1031-mkii.html?view=item&layout=item
This unit connects to the audio output of the Flex and is very
successful in reducing background noise. It has 8 stepwise levels of
noise reduction and a built in amplifier that is very effective. This
same unit is available in the US through GAP Antennas and known as "Hear
It" http://www.gapantenna.com/hearit_inline.htm This is the same unit
as the BHI but with the controls oriented horizontally rather than
vertically. It is a very effective unit especially for weak signal work.

Try these

Taps 64
Delay, the largest you can set it to
Start gain 10
Start leakage 1

[Flexradio] NR settings for SSB

2005-11-13 Thread Trevor Smithers
I've been playing around with the NR settings in 1.4.5p3 to see if I could
obtain a
reduction in noise without the audio sounding as if its coming from the end of
a long
pipe. I find the default settings Taps 65, Delay 50, Gain 50, far too
aggressive - it just
appears to reduce everything to sort of echoey mush.

Adjusting everything down to 40, 25,25 makes some improvement but not nearly
enough for my ears. I'd be interested to know what settings others are using
for NR.
What I'm really after is a slight reduction in noise (I believe its essential
to still hear
some band noise) and the audio signal to be left untouched.

As an aside, I connected a BHI NEIM1031 (GAP Hear It In Line Module ) in line
with
the speakers I use, and on the level 4 setting (15dB) it produces a significant
reduction
in background/band noise with no reduction in the intelligibility of the audio.

I do realise of course that this approach is not the same as reducing the noise
before
it gets anywhere near the speakers as the SDR software does.

Anyway, would be interested in any comments on the settings being used by
others.
