[Flexradio] Remote Operations

2013-08-20 Thread Barry Winters
I have seen some exchanges of emails on this subject and want to share my
recent experiences. There was an article in a recent QST about using Chrome
Remote Desktop app as a method for remote operation. I tried it and it works
extremely well using both a home wi-fi connection and an internet connection
using wireless phone hotspot.

I am a long time user of Chrome browser, so I have that running on all of my
computers. I downloaded the app from the Chrome store (free) and installed it
on three computers. First is the MacMini running Windows 8 Pro to drive the
Flex 3000. (Bootcamp). Second was a 17 HP Envy also running Win 8 Pro, and
third was a MacBook Air running latest OS X. The MacMini was set as the target
machine. I now regularly work the Flex remotely from my living room, one flight
up from the radio/computer room. I do run only digital modes due to poor
hearing. I use HRD's DM-780 and the Logbook (version 6). So far I have done
about a 100 QSOs using this approach. Most with the HP but probably a quarter
of them with the MacBook Air running OS X. Since Chrome runs on all major OSs,
the host PC doesn't care what the remote OS is, it just connects between the
two systems.

I have also made connections using a wireless hotspot device. In that instance
I did encounter some slow down since the connection speed was not at 4G or LTE
levels, but it worked.

I have also run the Flex radios from a Surface Pro tablet. The surface has 4GB
ram and runs Win 8 Pro x64. The major weakness is screen size and ram. The size
of type faces is quite small-not bad if only a foot from eyes but more
difficult if sitting on table so you can use a keyboard. Their is some
occasional very short freezing as RAM gets maxed out (running SDR, DM-780 and
Logbook). But it works. I have moved to the MacBook Air as my primary field PC
because the 13 screen is much easier to read. When running the Flex 1500
directly I boot to Win 8 Pro x64 using BootCamp. Once again I am only doing
digital through this system. However, I have a friend with a MacBook Air and a
1500 who does CW and some phone.

I assume your Flex-1500 was connected directly to the Surface Pro rather
than using it remotely. By the way that can't be done with the 3K or 5K
radios because there is no Firwire interface for it. I'd like to
understand why you would max out 4GB of ram. My shack desktop (a Dell
Vostro 420 with a 4 core processor) has only 4GB of ram and I am running
PowerSDR, 7 of the 8 DXLab applications, CW Skimmer, PstRotatorAZ, and
Google Earth. With all of that only 55% of my 4GB is utilized. Why would
the Surface Pro be maxed out with only PowrSDR, DM-780 and Logbook
running on it? Is DM-780 or Logbook really chewing up all that memory?

[Flexradio] Remote operations

2010-05-17 Thread adam grossmyer
Hi guys, once again I have another question for all of you, I hear talk
about remote operations and I am curious, has anyone run into a problem
with the 3000 on a remote setup getting stuck in transmit mode? What I
would like to do is, log into my PC via a little program I like to use
called Logmein. Oh I should mention that this would only be used for
digital modes. Anyway I can log into my PC from anywhere and see both of my
monitors from 1 screen, I can turn my antenna via the rotor program in HRD,
and I can log everything at that time as well. I am just worried about a
possible disconnect in the middle of a transmission and the transmitter
being stuck in the keyed position. Any thoughts?

Is that why your suffix is MOX?

John,

There is a wonderful set of articles in the Knowledge Base describing
how this has been done.

Start here: http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10083

Subject: [Flexradio] Remote Operations

Is there anyone one the list who is operating their station totally
remote
that I can confer with off list? I have been a subscriber to the
reflector
for a long time, my equipment is 1400 miles from were I live and I am
wanting to discuss the possibility of changing out a TS2000 for an SDR.
