Re: [Flexradio] Test

2015-02-08 Thread Tony Estep
This thread has drawn more posts than any in a long time.
The same topic came up a while back and eventually there was a response
from Flex saying that things weren't gonna go back to the old way. For me,
the new scheme seems to have little to offer, so I'll just hang out here
and read the few posts that trickle in.

Re: [Flexradio] Test

2015-02-08 Thread Peter G. Viscarola
Yup... the "community" web site is now the focus of almost everyone's attention.

Mark me down as "not a big fan" of the new site. I use it because there's
really no alternative.

The discussions HERE on this list over the years were variously engaging,
stimulating, frustrating, informative, histrionic, rude, funny, and
interesting. I learned a lot here.

The general organization of the Community site just somehow doesn't seem as
conducive to free-flowing back and forth discussions. It's "post a
question/problem/idea" (you must choose a category) and get a response. The
new site IS however nicely conducive to people pontificating on topics about
which they know little and randomly complaining to Flex.

Never mind, now I'm just randomly complaining. Gad! I think my post could be
summed up as "I remember the good old days, we had an active email reflector,
and ..." -- THAT is scary.

The new web based forum has a feature to send all posts as emails so I don't
have to scan the web site to see if anything is happening but if I want to post
I must log in first which is not quite as convenient as sending an email.  You
can post screen shots and the search is pretty good and you can edit your last
post if you see you made a mistake.  The flex staff post frequently when not
crushed with work.

The problem is that when running the demo, there has to be a hardware
component that performs the A/D and D/A conversions and this is your PC
sound card. Vista and to a lesser degree Win7 have made it difficult to
use generic sound cards for this purpose.

You can get it you work with a lot of "fiddling" with soundcard setting.

The FLEX-x000 SDRs have their own internal A/D and D/A converters so this
issue is moot when you have radio hardware attached to the PC running
PowerSDR.

PowerSDR v2.0 will be 100% compatible with Win7 x64, so it will not have
the problems listed below because it does not use .NET 1.1

Is there a solution for this? I see the notice that there is a known
compatibility issue with the latest update to Vista.

I am trying to run the test drive version of PowerSDR with Windows 7, 64
bit on an HP desktop, quad processor, 6GB. PowerSDR requires Microsoft
NET Framework 1.1.4322 which in turn will not install - it has
compatibility issues with Windows 7. I have just ordered my Flex 5000 and
would like to work out the PowerSDR installation before the radio arrives.

[Flexradio] Test Drive/Demo PowerSDR

2009-12-16 Thread budirving
Is there a solution for this? I see the notice that there is a known
compatibility issue with the latest update to Vista.

I am trying to run the test drive version of PowerSDR with Windows 7, 64 bit
on an HP desktop, quad processor, 6GB. PowerSDR requires Microsoft NET
Framework 1.1.4322 which in turn will not install - it has compatibility
issues with Windows 7. I have just ordered my Flex 5000 and would like to
work out the PowerSDR installation before the radio arrives.

AB1KK

[Flexradio] Test SVN 3171 fails RX image & level calibration

2009-06-17 Thread Dave
Now that the test branch is back in business I attempted to do an rx level
and image calibration with clean install. Driver at 96000/1024. PowerSDR
started and set to 96000/1024 then run calibration. It fails at 12 meters
with the red X in panadapter display.

Test Branch SVN 3160 works fine. SVN 3166 and 3167 still appear broken. Any
idea what happened between 3160 and 3166 to cause the problem?

There have been two major improvements in CW recently in the test

I can also now set the Sample Rate at 192K and Buffer to 1024 with no

Re: [Flexradio] Test Branch SVN 3166 improved QSK?

2009-06-14 Thread John Sweeney
Same exact thing here as WX7Y Bret, the temporary work around is to sequence
through the sample rates. Need to do this every time on start up, a large
change in frequency or band change. Cycle through the sample rates and it
will start operating. I'm sure this will be fixed up very soon. (it is
Alpha code)

Anyone else notice improvement in the QSK? I sure do.

Same exact problem here EXCEPT if I would go and reset my Audio sample rate
to 4800 it started to work except the SQUELCH was up and squelching the
receiver, I then went to 9600 sample rate and every NOW was working then I
went back to 19200 sample rate and it now works BUT when I shut down
PowerSDR and brought it back up, I had to do it again and this time it took
several sample rate switching back and forth before it finally sinked with
the Driver(I think) and worked like it is supposed to.
So every time you start PowerSDR we will need to do this until they fix the
bug.

Hope this helps track it down for others.

Subject: [Flexradio] Test Branch SVN 3166 improved QSK?

The latest Test Branch SVN 3166, which according to the change log,
"redone vfo initialization", seems to improve the CW QSK significantly.
The TX>RX transition sounds better on the audio, no pop, now smooth
sounding. My Delay at 15ms seems best and quick.

I can also now set the Sample Rate at 192K and Buffer to 1024 with no
issues
, whereas before I had to use 192/2048. I don't understand what N4HY
is
doing on Test branch SVN 3166, don't know if it is supposed to impact
the CW QSK, but it appears to improve the fast QSK.

I was kind of wondering about that. I knew they
could "lock" after a fashion, but I didn't know
how they did it or what the performance
was. And, as I think about it, I'm not sure that
it would make much difference in a two tone
measurement, assuming you're doing some sort of
long term power spectrum measurement to see the
spurs. Of course, if one claims the biggest spur
is 60-70 dB down, that's a non-trivial
measurement to make. (depending on what the
power spectral density of the noise you're
measuring the spur above is.. if the tone is at
-10 dBm, and the spur is at -70dBc (-80dBm), your
sources have to be substantially quieter, and the
measurement bandwidth narrow enough to see the
spur above the noise floor...) I'll have to
think about it in the HF case. I've been looking
at many GHz, and things are sort of different up there.

Damn. I merely hit reply and generated some embedded HTML. My apologies
for the QRM. What I tried to post to Jim Lux was:

>> I assume you've got the 8640s locked to a common source (or each other).

Highly unlikely -- the 8640s are free-running oscillators with
excellent short-term phase noise. Signal is derived from a cavity
oscillator. The have a rudimentary frequency stabilizer which can lock
the last digit of the frequency from an internal counter, but the
frequency can wander +/- 1/2 digit. Hence, the two-tone measurement is not
made with coherent oscillators.

I assume you've got the 8640s locked to a common source (or each other).

>Combiner/attenuator/filter network port-to-port isolation is in the 70-80 dB

What's the match into the radio or the combiner? For instance, in a
worst case, with a total reflection and no atten after the combiner,
the port to port would only be 0.8+16+3.5+3.5 + 16+0.8 = 40.6
dB. With a more believable -20dB mismatch, it's still only 60dB port to port.

Gen:filter:pad:splitter:reflection:splitter:pad:filter:Gen

The output attenuator on the signal generator helps too, at least as
far as generator caused IMD. That is, a -50dBm signal from Generator
1 being fed into the output of generator 2 putting out at +10 dBm
isn't going to be a big deal, hopefully.

One might want to look at spurious signals coming *out* of the device
under test, too, particularly with a direct conversion receiver like
these.. I haven't measured it recently, so I don't recall the levels,
but, at least on my SDR1000s, there's a fairly healthy signal at the
DDS frequency coming out of the antenna port on receive (at least if
no preamp is on) It's enough that if you run 3 SDR1000s through 20dB
pads into a combiner, you can see the DDSes of the other two radios
on the third. Again.. detectable doesn't imply causing measurement
error, but it's a trap (or a potential stalking horse for someone
wanting to claim your performance isn't as good as you claim).

Re: [Flexradio] test results?

2007-08-09 Thread Gerald Youngblood
I covered this topic in an email to the reflector on Monday. The number
quoted is two tone, third order dynamic range at 2 kHz tone spacing. With
the preamp off, the input tones used are -10 dBm to the antenna terminals.
IM3 is measured using a Minicircuits ZFSC-2-1-12 combiner with 16 db of
attenuation on each of the two respective input connections to the combiner.
Each input also has a Minicircuits BLP-15 low pass filter to eliminate
mixing of the generator harmonics. The generators are HP 8640Bs. The
output of the combiner goes to a 40 dB Kay step attenuator.
Combiner/attenuator/filter network port-to-port isolation is in the 70-80 dB
range on 14 MHz as I recall.

[Flexradio] test results?

2007-08-09 Thread Jim Lux
I see reference on the website to test results being in, and better
two tone, etc., but I couldn't find the test results. I searched the
KB for two-tone and found only the FAQ, which just says "better than
the SDR-1000".

I did find some numbers on the 5000A details page, but no details of
what frequencies were tested, etc. Says "top performing narrow
spaced..." and then "incredible 105 dB on 14 MHz", but it's not clear
what is being described here. Is that the IP3? Or a dynamic range,
or what? (leaving aside the issue of whether IP3 has meaning in a
digital system or in a system where you're not modeling the
nonlinearities with low order polynomials).

It might be nice to have a "spec sheet" that one could point to, and
with standard definitions of the terms (i.e. a pointer a description
of how *we* define a particular number)

I ask this because it came up when someone asked me about the
performance, and I just pointed them to the site in general. Then,
in another context, the question of how do you measure things like
small levels of IMD, when your generators may actually create the
distortion (e.g. how do you do the combining, etc.)

Speaking of major re-writes when is dual receive going
to be turned on? I sure would love a receiver on the
DX and a tranceiver on the pileup, with the ability to
hear both audio streams in the headset, preferably one
in one ear and the other on both ears.

2006-08-10 Thread Joe - AB1DO
An example of how this may work was presented by Beppe IK3VIG in Apr 2005.
(see < http://www.radioamatore.it/sdr1000/mypowersdr.html > ). The graphical
designs presented by Beppe sparked what has become the current major
software re-write to split Radio and GUI functions, enabling the writing of
skins by users as Mike points out below. An image does indeed speak a
thousand words.

Re: [Flexradio] Test Drive report

2006-08-10 Thread Mike Naruta
Well, let's compare it to an Icom IC-7800 for example.
Looking at the front panel I count 37 rotary knobs,
10 LEDs, and 82 push buttons. That doesn't include
the stuff on the display, which also has two analog
meter simulations, each with six scales.

The software re-write in progress is separating the
user interface from the signal-processing. This will
make it easier to have different "skins". For the
HF CW ops there can be a cleaner panel without FM, DSB,
transverter, microphone level, etc. A skin for the
AM ragchewers doesn't care about general coverage,
25 Hertz filter, CWU, etc. Some will have the received
signal power meter, others won't.

If I get a chance to write a skin, I'll change those
acres of push-buttons to pull-downs. Won't that be
a clean panel?

Chris,

One of the great strengths of the Flex project is that both ends of the
software (the back-end, or business end that is related to the RF,and the
front-end which is the GUI. or user system control interface, that you see
on your computer screen), is being developed under a cohesive development
tracking and reporting system. Not to mention the open source, which
additionally is a tremendous project strength.

Log into the Bug Tracker and Feature Tracker part of the web site. You will
see a Feature request (
http://support.flex-radio.com/ReviewBug.aspx?id=273&it=F ) that directly
addresses some of your concerns. Feel free to add your own comments. The
development team at Flex is looking at these comments.

To prevent un-necessary "reflector chatter" and useless non productive
message threads these Feature and Bug reports are held to that part of the
web site, where they can be dealt with in a professional development
environment. Chris, to be honest, it has taken all my powers of personal
reserve to adhere to the protocol of using only the above mentioned Feature
and Bug Trackers and not allow myself to "bubble over" into the reflector
about the subject matter of your first paragraph that I quoted above.

Enough said that I was concerned enough to have had previously penned a
private note to John and Eric expressing my concerns. about just the
subject matter that you mention.. the issue of what I used to refer to (in
25+ years of software development) as the "gee-whiz factor".

Anyway, not to worry,.. no Gin and Tonic necessary. You sound like your
first look already has you hooked! You are in the right place at the right
time.
