Re: [Flexradio] 6300 Remoting that really works?

2014-05-13 Thread Dr. Howard S. White
I have been remoting my Flex Radios (5000, 6700) for years via my iPad

Now I have a 6700 which I have controlled from 17 different countries so far...

The 6700 series is very easy to remote power on and off over the Internet.
https://community.flexradio.com/flexradio/topics/succesful_6000_power_on_standby_control_on_the_lan_solution_with_wemo

The 6000 series is by far the easiest radio I have ever used for remote
operation.

Thanks, Matthew. The real question here is not that part of it, but power
control. I don't want to leave the radios on all the time and (in fact) I want
to be able to sequence the power on sequence however I require it to be done,
now or in the future.

With the Flex 5000, particularly it's On/Off switch, that doesn't seem to
be really possible. With the 6000 series, I am learning, it appears to be
possible, which is what I am looking for.

I have three basic elements to solve; yours is one (I also know of another
solution that works well with Elecraft), another is the whole internet thing (I
have a MiFi at the shack, with port mapping, so probably have to do VPN,
working on a solution there), and then power control.

The other elements outside the rig seem comparably under control. I can do A/C
power control, antenna switching, and amplifier control with the right
products. It's power switching the Flex rigs that have heretofore been the
biggest unanswered question.

The RCA input handles shutdown. If the Remote On feature is enabled,
grounding the RCA powers up the radio. When the RCA is not grounded, the
radio will shutdown. When the feature is turned off, the RCA state does
not interfere with normal operation of the radio.

Checkout the REM ON (Remote On) RCA plug on the back of the FLEX-6300 (also

2014-05-12 Thread Michael Walker
Hi Larry

Good points. I have been remoting since 2006 and my solution with a TS480
and a RemoteRig is flawless. I have to go 6 months at a time without
touching my radios/computer.

I just sold my 3000, so it looks like I will jump on a 6300. My goal will
be to have it running remotely by September so it can 'stand alone' all
winter.

Re: [Flexradio] 6300 Remoting that really works?

2014-05-12 Thread Larry Loen
I'm interested and concerned about the ability to run the 6000 series
remotely.

For reasons I won't bore you with, lack of a really good remote power
on/off capability -- such as Elecraft unquestionably has for 6300 scale
money -- may be a deal breaker for this long time Flex owner as far as the
6000 series goes.

I still have no solution for the 5000 (sticking a toothpick into the on/off
switch is not a serious answer -- I want and need to do power sequencing).

Where does the 6000 series really sit with this? I can't tell. Remote
operation is becoming increasingly important -- and popular. But, those
that seem to know (one of whom has been doing remote operations since long
before it became popular and owned a 5000) is very dismissive of the
current state of the Flex art here for both the 5000 and 6000. That long
time ham moved on to Elecraft and I've seen his shack. It works and works
like a dream.

The 6000 series "should" work. It's an internet "addressable" device. I
should be able to "remote" everything that counts now. But, I need the
physical power control and sequencing.

I'd even pay a decent amount of money for a factory-supported, optional
add-on. Something where I could hook up a USB cable or even just a relay
cable and do the on/off processing. Or, supply power and issue a CAT
command. Many things would be suitable. But, they have to be serious
excursions into the power aspect of it. My shack and radio needs to be
powered off when not in use. I will be able to leave only one or two very
low power (cell phone level) devices powered on when I am not operating;
they can run the "on" sequencing when I need it. The radio itself must be
power sequenced.
