Re: FLUXLIST: Mr T. versus Everything

2000-10-08 Thread David Baptiste Chirot

I always wondered if Mr T didn't get that line "I Pity the
Fool"--from the famous song of that name--

the phrase had become after it came out a popular expression

The most famous version is by Bobby "Blue" Bland--

it's a great song and was huge hit--(in r and b market mainly)

My boyfriend is a big Bobby Bland fan, had long thought the same
thing... For reference, the song hit 46 on the Billboard pop chart in
February 1961 (always handy to have a copy of the Billboard guide for
points like these).

Tangentially, I came upon a whole mess of old Bobby Bland '45's at a
Salvation Army in Atlanta recently (though "I Pity the Fool" was not in
the stack)...Of course "I Pity the Fool" could just be a common phrase
in Southern Black English that white folks wouldn't recognize,
engendering both the Bobby Bland song AND Mr. T's tagline.

Maybe there's a Mr. T info. archive where we'd be able to find that out.

FLUXLIST:Gett better School stuff

Hope you feel better, Dave!

It seems that every body's sick, three of my teachers were out the last two
weeks.

By the way Micheal Asher is one of my teachers, and a guy by the name of
Martin Kerslers- He has had stuff in the Getty at a show called departures
and at LACMA right now, among other places. Pretty cool.
I love Micheal's work, I think it is some of the most brilliant stuff. And
Martin is real interested in the body, very cool also.

's 's to everyone and especially to Reed but
especially to Dave.

there's something obscene though about mixing decaf with Liquor.
Belize Tropical Brandy, Creme de Cocao, #1 Barrel Rum, Amaretto,
White Creme de Menthe, Kahlu'a, Baileys, Frangelico, Grand Marinier,
Tequila, or any of the above together in an unholy marriage with sanka,
America's Conservative Coffee Company's (decaf), Nes.de.café,
Harvest Dixie Gold Decaf, or decaf starbucks, etc...

similar to this: a friend of mine who had been a steadfast vegetarian
for years, has recently taken a version of personal ethical
relativity to this new burger eating kick he is on. barbecue, ground chuck,
steaks, sausage, most cuts of most meats. it keeps him free from
accusations of taking any kind of moral highground.
what fascinates me though is his putting bacon on a veggie burger.
many people I run into draw the line there. there is just something
disturbing about it for vegetarians and omnivores alike.

FLUXLIST: unholy marriage

2000-10-08 Thread scott rigby

speaking of which, (this is a research question)...
does anyone have any information on any history of
marriage or weddings and art? I know of many
"married couples" who make work together. I am thinking of
Koons and his wife, the Kabakov's...
but what about work that has specifically included a wedding,
or work that has focused on this in any way?
I thought I would look into Fluxus because of the exhaustive
art/life overlays etc., but so far - no luck.
this one has me a little stumped. if anyone has any sources,
vague, informed or otherwise, please enlighten me..
many thanks,

scott,

g.hendricks also documented his divorce in a something else press book
called 'ring piece.' it is available at art metropole.

discussions of maciunas' wedding to billy hutching can be found in Mr Fluxus
(which i believe is still in print). there are only one or two images that
i'm aware of - of the couple changing into each others wedding outfits.

george maciunas has a fluxwedding (just before his death), which followed
the previous flux divorce of geoff hendricks and his wife bici. hendricks
still resides over fluxweddings. he told me about two women who married at
the ceremony for al hansen's funeral. they sawed a chair in half (similar to
the fluxdivorce) and then tied it back together.

yers,

dave
