IY HP-ROMAN8 Dear Ian, XFree86 uses the ISO 8859-1 (``Latin-1'') character set for Western-European languages, which is derived from DEC Multilingual. For historical reasons, HP uses the HP ROMAN-8 character set. While it would be easy to add ROMAN-8 support to XFree86, XFree86 does not currently support the ROMAN-8 character set, which we believe to be obsolete. The simplest workaround would be to add aliases for ISO 8859-1 fonts to the ROMAN-8 names; please see the mkfontdir(1) manpage. You should be aware that doing this will break accented characgters. Since you obviously have a HP machine around, the best solution would probably be to run a font server on the HP machine and add this font server to your XFree86 configuration. This way all the fonts on the HP machine would be available to applications that use your Linux box(es) as X server.
