RE: Free Visual tool for making fo files

2004-05-24 Thread Richard Sweeney
I tried XSLFast, it crashed the WHOLE machine (Windows XP) within about
2 minutes of using it. After the reboot and the 2nd crash I gave up on
it. If anyone has had more luck with it I'd be interested in how good it
is.

The only free tool I know of is FOA (Formatting Objects Author). There
are a
couple of commercial products, but none of them are very good. I find
them
more of a hinderence than a help, but please judge them for yourself:

FOA

http://foa.sourceforge.net/

Commercial

http://www.xslfast.com

RE: Including images from a servlet

2004-01-20 Thread Richard Sweeney
Sorry to be a pain, but I'm not having much luck with this. This is what
I've done so far:

After creating the driver, I've inserted the line

org.apache.fop.configuration.Configuration.put("baseDir",
"C:/stylesheets/fop");

and in the stylesheet changed the line to

However, when I transform it, I get the message:

[ERROR] Error while creating area : Invalid Image URL - error on relative
URL : unknown protocol: c <---(that's actually where the message ends)

I've tried some variations of the baseDir path, but I get the same message
just with a different protocol on the end (e.g. /stylesheets/fop/logo2.jpg)

Has anyone encountered this before?

You can set the base directory for which relative paths will be resolved
against. This can be done using a configuration file, or set in a
program. See:

http://xml.apache.org/fop/faq.html#servlet-baseDir

Including images from a servlet

2004-01-20 Thread Richard Sweeney
Hi,

I'm using FOP with a servlet. The servlet generates XML which is then
translated using XSL or, if the user clicks print, will take the XML and
generate a PDF. In the XSL-FO I have an image that appears in the produced
PDF and reference it like so:

if I do it this way though then the image is searched for in the current
directory, usually the Web Server's bin directory, so I usually have to
write it like so:

is there a way to make it search for the image in the current directory,
i.e. the same one as the XSL-FO stylesheet?

Thanks

We have all been wondering why .NET isn't implemented in Open

You should see that the from: address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], you reply
to this address and it gets distributed to everyone on the list. To ask a
question you send a message to the list at the same address, but you already
knew that :)

RE: Scaling images

2003-11-19 Thread Richard Sweeney
Hi,

I used

which produces a slightly scaled image. I've tried adding width and height
and just reducing the pt size to about 96 and 93 respecitvely (the original
size is 129x124). This give a more pleasing image but I was wondering if
there's a better way of doing it.

On another note, you'll notice that I've written "/stylesheets/ING.bmp", I
create my fo file from an xsl stylesheet and I can only read the image if I
hardcode the complete path to the image, which lives in the same place as
the xsl file. Is there a way around this?

Thanks

Richard,

How are you setting the size. Can you post the external-image tag you
are using.

Only Width and Height attributes are supported in FOP.

Subject: Scaling images

Sorry if this question is asked alot but I'm having difficulty with
images.

I was given an example layout by someone to turn into a PDF using FOP. I
took the image out of the Word Document they sent me and added it as an
external graphic to my fo file. However when it is generated it is
slightly bigger (about 20% or so) than the original and it looks jagged.
Is there anything I can do about this? I've tried specifying its size
based upon the its dimensions but this makes no difference. Any comments
would be appreciated.

Thanks

Determining table column count

2003-04-28 Thread Richard Sweeney
I'm creating a table with a dynamic number of columns and at the top of the
table there is a row with a comment on the right hand side. If I specify
number-columns-spanned to a value larger than the number of columns then it
throws an exception.

Basically I have an XML file with all the columns that can appear in the
table, but not all of them are listed so I can check what width the column
is to determine whether or not I have to create a column.

Can I specify a value for number-columns-spanned that will span the all the
columns in the table or do I need to do it another way?

Thanks

Sending directly to printer from servlet

2002-11-01 Thread Richard Sweeney
I'm trying to send my rendered PDF directly to the server-side printer. I'm
using a Document class and a stream to the XSLT file. This works and my
printer prints out the PDF. The only problem I have is that the image
included at the top of the page doesn't come out. I also have a page number
at the bottom of the page (region-after to be precise) and that doesn't get
printed either. Using the same code to render the PDF to the client via a
browser prints the image and the page numbers fine. Here's the code I'm
using:

Driver driver = null;
PrinterJob pj = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
PrintRenderer renderer = new PrintRenderer(pj);

/*If any of these values are null then give up immediately*/

if (doc == null) {

  System.out.println("Document is null, no point in carrying on...");
  return false;
}

if (xslFile == null) {

  System.out.println("xslFile is null, no point in carrying on...");
  return false;
}

driver = new Driver();

pj.setCopies(1);
driver.setRenderer(renderer);

try {

Transformer transformer =
TransformerFactory.newInstance().newTransformer(new StreamSource (xslFile));

transformer.transform(new DOMSource(doc), new
SAXResult(driver.getContentHandler()));
}

/*If an exception occurs during the transformation, catch it and return
null*/

catch (TransformerConfigurationException tce) {

System.out.println("TransformerConfigurationException: " +
tce.getMessage());
return false;
}

catch (TransformerException te) {

System.out.println("TransformerException: " + te.getMessage());
return false;
}

/*Everything went fine, return true*/

return true;

--

The code for rendering to the browser is only slightly different (get the
output stream and use a printWriter etc.) I'm using a landscape layout,
would that make any difference? The printer is an P LaserJet 2100 Series PS.
