These are good points indeed IMO.
I have also proposed improvements of the search tool but have read no
comments on them so far:

Thanks for the fossil tool, it is really useful!

I support this. Sometimes the file name is known but it's location is
unknown. Instead of spending time expanding all directories,

Even this implemented would help find files efficiently:
http://www.fossil-scm.org/index.html/timeline?n=100=file-filter

As of now, you would need to review the tree:
http://www.fossil-scm.org/index.html/tree?type=tree
Then click on Fossil directory at the top and use the browser find to
locate the file you want. Additionally that won't hide other
non-matches, it will just skip to the matching file faster.

Re: [fossil-users] Search on file name, display history?

2015-11-10 Thread Steve Stefanovich
‎Search actually works very well over all committed files (we run it with '*'‎
and set to trunk on the server, with an index).

I find it a valuable feature, because our module structure has lots of files
and a class can live in multiple files named the same, but in different
directories.

I usually search for the content and then a) copy the link to Emacs
minibuffer, adjust it a bit and open the checked-out file, or b) copy to the
browser address bar and adjust it to get to the Fossil finfo timeline for
specific file.

So if Fossil can allow a search for filename, give‎ me a relative link to the
file for use case a) and finfo history link for b) - that would be just awesome.

I've discussed this and other things before, and would be keen to hear other
people thoughts:

http://www.mail-archive.com/fossil-users%40lists.fossil-scm.org/msg19535.html

(Point 3. is fixed, BTW.)

P.S. Even when rebuilding index over a specific branch and repeating a) or b)
above, it takes just a couple of seconds for hundreds of files and it's heaps
faster then traversing the files via Fossil files menu.

Maybe a dumb question, but can search be expanded to repo files? Maybe just the
tip? Is it a speed issue or too many results to process?

Maybe a dumb question, but can search be expanded to repo files? Maybe just
the tip? Is it a speed issue or too many results to process?
