Re: RAM
The AW51B is a Sun SPARC 5. I am only aware of 32MB RAM (SIMMs or DIMMs ??) being available. You should consider 64MB to be the minimum, but 128MB is recommended especially if you are running FoxView/FoxDraw. RE: RAM
Speaking of RAM. We just got an estimate for how much Foxboro would charge to upgrade our 4 WP's and 1 AW to 256 MB of RAM. It was on the order of $20K plus. We all know materials is 1/20 of the total installed cost. My question is since RAM is readily available what would Foxboro's stance be if we upgraded ourselves? We have a service agreement with them. Would it be all bets are off or would RAM problems be unsupported or would all future problems be blamed on RAM? Maybe I shouldn't ask but I find this cost ridiculous. It would be a tremendous performance boost but I can't justify it as a stand alone upgrade. We are going to have to tie it to a software upgrade to capitalize it. Chad Airhart Senior Instrument, Electrical & Control Systems Engineer Equistar Chemicals, LP. Victoria, TX Wk. RE: RAM
Chad, I don't know Foxboro's official policy (if they have one), but, in my experience, they have always been very reasonable on matters of things like additional RAM, additional hard drives, etc. coming from a non-Foxboro source. I wouldn't anticipate additional RAM causing any problems, but if it does, you can take it out and be right back where you started. RE: RAM
Since I'm not a lawyer (thank God!), I'll leave the contractual nuances and obligations to you all to consider, but we've upgraded RAM in some of our Sun workstations by buying them direct. Our boxes didn't self-destruct. A reliable source (which was recommended here a while ago) is MemoryX. I have no connection with it other than being a satisfied customer. For the B-style boxes, check these pages out: Memory for Sparc5: http://www.memoryx.net/sparc5.html House-brand memory: http://www.memoryx.net/ss532.html Sun-manufactured memory: http://www.memoryx.net/5012471.html http://www.memoryx.net/5953346.html For the D/E-style boxes, start here: http://www.memoryx.net/memx/ultrasparc1.html Hope this helps. RE: RAM
Whatever you do: do not install PC compliant memory. I MUST be Sun Sparc compliant. The SUN standards are a bit higher. PC memory just won't work reliable and should not be used. We buy RAM from Sun (it is Sun partnumbered and more expensive) because customers do, sort of, rely on the Foxboro systems to work properly.
