Re: Anyone used Tortoise CVS with Frame Files

2006-03-15 Thread Donald.M.Rinderknecht
Content Management and Versioning is a recurring topic on Framers. Does
anyone have a summary of systems that are compatible with Frame?

Also, instead of using binary files, would it be possible to use MIF or,
if in a completely structured environment, XML in the CVS to keep track
of differences down to the 'element' level?

Thanks,
Don

Printing a 6 x 9 Manual

2006-03-15 Thread Angela Akridge
Oops, one more question. My print vendor is printing my 6 x 9 document. If
the printer uses 9 x12 paper whereby one book page consumes one side of the
9 x 12 paper and another book page consumes the other side, what print
options should I consider setting on the Frame file. Anything? If the print
vendor folds the 9 x 12, don't the manual pages need to print in a specific
order (not 1-23)?

Have used Tortoise SVN for a couple of years for Frame XML saves:
brilliant. My tech colleagues tell me that SVN (Subversion) is hugely
better than CVS and that CVS is dying fast as a result.

They also tell me that Subversion doesn't have the same storage penalty
as CVS with binary files and does binary diffs (though personally I
can't see the point of that).

Anyone used Tortoise CVS with Frame Files

2006-03-15 Thread Jon Konrath
> Just wondering if anyone out there has used the open source
> Tortoise CVS with Frame files?

I've been using it for a few years now. It was always good, but the
version that came out maybe a year ago fixed some little problems,
especially with the images in icons, and now it's great.

We're already a CVS shop, with everyone using WinCVS or the CVS support
in Eclipse for code. The one thing that Tortoise does better is that in
WinCVS, I had to be very careful to initially add binary files and text
files with the binary or text add, and if I added a .fm as text, I had
to go back, delete, commit, add again, and commit, which was a pain.
With Tortoise, I just right click on a bunch of stuff and add, and it
figures out what's binary and what's not.

The fact that it colors the icons to show you what is and isn't checked
out is also a big plus. And for whatever reason, it's a lot easier to
just right-click on files and do stuff like check the history on a file,
rather than fire up another application and do it the old way.

Lots of good replies, but there's one thing no one has mentioned
(although Mark Barratt alludes to it): Tortoise isn't a version control
system. It's a client, an _interface_ to version control systems --
specifically to the venerable CVS and the upstart Subversion (SVN).

We're switching from CVS to Subversion here, but Tech Pubs doesn't check
in FM files. We only check in the PDFs and help files that go into the
build. The engineers here echo Mark's comments about Subversion's
superiority to CVS.

I've been using Tortoise clients to access both CVS and SVN for a while
now, and I can vouch for Tortoise -- it's much better than WinCVS, which
I used to use.

As for Hedley's question:

> Martha:
>
> > I use TortoiseCVS with Frame files. I mark both .fm and .book files

> > as binary, so that each time I check in the entire file is replaced,

Martha misspoke -- when you check in, the file isn't _replaced_, the new
version is _added_. Every version you check in is available in the
repository. That's why file space quickly becomes an issue with binary
files -- unlike code (text files), you're not just checking in the
diffs, you're adding a whole new copy of the file. If you do that every
day with lots of FM files, the repository admin may shoot you.

I don't know anything about the "binary diff" capability in SVN that
Mark mentioned. I'm not sure how that would/could work, and I probably
wouldn't trust it. ;-) Since we only check in the final docs (PDF and
help), it's typically only one check-in per software release and space
isn't really an issue.

Revised (and free) FrameDITA-lite available

2006-03-15 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Hi all: (and sorry for the cross post to those who, like me, get this a half
dozen times)

We'll be at the DITA conference next week showing a more fully featured version
of our FrameDITA-lite application. However, based on the feedback that we've
had, it seems to work well for the beta group and we are ready to release it to
the masses.

There is also documentation that goes with this. It's about 40 detailed pages.
There are samples, exercises to try and much more.

You can learn more at www.publishingsmarter.com under Design & Development in
FrameDITA. We generally try to give you a good idea of what to expect there and
also link to the FrameDITA-lite readme file there as well.

Please feel free to forward this information to others you feel may benefit
from the use of DITA and FrameMaker.

Thanks in advance,

Content Management (was Anyone used Tortoise CVS with Frame Files)

2006-03-15 Thread Lynne A. Price
Don,
I don't have the summary you requested, but if your XML documents
round-trip, yes, definitely use XML in your versioning system. Just make
sure to keep track of the version of all application files (DTD, template,
r/w rules, application definition file, and of FrameMaker itself) used with
each document.
And there is growing support in content management systems for XML.

So far, that's never happened to me. I've used various version control
systems over the years with FM files and I've been fine.

To protect myself somewhat from the situation you describe, I have
a condition tag called Obsolete, which I apply to deleted features
and leave hidden for the duration of the release. Then I delete text
marked obsolete later, when I'm sure the feature won't return from
the dead.
