Figure number updating
Hi, First of all, I panicked and it transpired that it was only in two (though major) chapters in a five-chapter book, and not all. After I calmed down a bit, I discovered the following: There was a disconnect between my first page, where the first figure appeared and the next page, where the second figure appeared, which is why the second figure thought it was the first one. The question was why: Autoconnect was selected and the tag letter between the frames was consistent. Well, I don't know - the only explanation is that the material was pasted from Word, and there must have been a massive amount of garbage screwing up the document. My solution was to recreate the info on the first page, apply the first page master page, then delete the corrupt first page. So far, holding my breath, but it seems to have worked. Thanks. Hopefully, the problem is due to numbering series. How is the autonumber string defined? What other series are used in the documents? How are the captions created? Unfortunately, I have experienced numbering problems if the caption is a text frame within the anchored frame. If the anchored frames are copied, and not created from scratch, the numbering sequence eventually breaks. But for that to happen in ALL your files seems bizarre. Unless all the files were started from a common copy... Perhaps with more details we can be of more help. Eric L. Unwanted Greek characters in running headers
Hello Framers, I am sure there is a simple explanation to this, but I cannot think of it right now: While revising an old project containing 12 different languages in FM 7.0, Win XP, SP2, I suddenly find that my running headers show Greek characters instead of the 'native' German, Swedish, French ... characters that otherwise show correctly in the text's headings and body. There is apparently nothing wrong when I examine the variables. And the Greek part of the project seems to be OK re. headers. The fonts are Times New Roman and ITC Officina Sans, and both have worked well before. I cannot remember that I have changed my system much recently, except for installing SP2, WWePub and tried out the Sundorne plugin. Thanks for any clues on this unexpected puzzle. /Nanna

Linda and Grant are correct. Mif2Go is the only reasonable choice, and far better than FM's own filter. Furthermore, contrary to what I said about HTML conversion moments ago, you really can just "push a button" and end up with a pretty decent Word doc. You might want to do some tweaking of settings -- and Mif2Go has all the power and complexity you could ask for, if you want complete control -- but the defaults will probably get you pretty close. Mike, Here's a snippet of HTML code: ** To assist in installing the replacement adapter, you may find it helpful to label the cables and wires with the connector names from which you unplug them. On the TigrNet keyboard, enter {{shutdown}} to shut down the TigrNet software. Turn off the STB or unplug the STB from the power source. Remove the 422 adapter from the back of the TV at the Velcro® strip. On the side of the 422 that has only one connector, unplug the CAT-5 or CAT-6 straight-through cable from the RJ-45 connector. Unplug the dual stereo 3.5mm cable from the 3.5mm Phono jack on the 422. Unplug the second dual stereo 3.5mm cable from the second 3.5mm Phono jack on the 422. To disconnect the 422 from the TV, do one of the following: For a Phillips TV, unplug the RJ-11 6- conductor patch cord from the RJ-11 PHIL connector on the 422PS. For a Sumitomo TV, unplug the CAT-5 or CAT- 6 cable from the RJ-45 CMIC connector on the 422PS. For a Zenith TV, unplug the RJ-11 6- conductor patch cord from the RJ-11 ZEN connector on the 422ZP. student/tutor page layout
Dual-flow documents can be difficult to maintain. I wrote a plugin a few years ago (boringly named DualFlows) for laying out dual-flow documents like Student/Teacher guides. Even with the plugin, users had difficulty with pagination, etc., so I pulled it off the market. Rick Dave, I wonder if this might be the one situation where a "B" flow would be useful. Since the student's book is already in FrameMaker, and since their content would probably change more often than the trainer's, this solution would require two books. Once the content for student's book is updated and approved, you would select all, copy, and paste into the B flow of the trainer's book. The trainer's guide template would be set up with the B flow on the left pages and A flow on the right. Just a thought. Glenn

student/tutor page layout
Hi Folks One of our trainers has asked me to help with a layout question for a new training manual. His question is as follows: ** The training department are going to produce facilitator's guides to accompany the course material we produce. These are going to list the extra info the tutor must know in order to run the course (eg key points to cover, equipment for practical exercises etc etc etc). The idea being anyone who reads the facilitator's guide should be able to run teach the course. The format we would like to use is to have the students notes appearing on the left page of the facilitator's guide and the right hand page being used to list all the extra info the tutor needs to know. That way the tutor can see what the students notes say but have another page of extra info. Is there an easy way to set up a template so we can import the students notes (already written in frame) so that each page (left and right) from the students notes will appear as the left page in the facilitators guide? ** The only way I can think of is to add Disconnected Pages and then manually connect text frames on alternate pages, so that all left pages are in one flow, and all right pages are in another flow. I assume you could also keep page 1 in its own flow as a title page. Is there any other way of doing this in Frame? We are using Frame 6 on Windows 2000. Short of going into the html file and adding //, /, and tags to all the lists (and there are A LOT of them), is there any way to have the lists numbered or bulleted as they are in the FM file? I don't profess to understand the cause, though I have seen autoconnect problems before. But now that you've found it and believe it may be from the import of data from Word, it is probably a good idea to perform the "MIF Roundtrip" cleanup. Saving files to MIF format and then reopening those to recreate the .FM document is a known trick to clean up a variety of odd behaviors in FrameMaker, and remove (unwanted) artifacts that carry over during the import process. And it usually only take a few seconds per file. Of course, save copies of the existing FM files to archive just in case (I'm not usually paranoid, but we all know stuff happens). Well, the text was imported from Word. That explains EVERYTHING. lol :D Should have thought about disconnected text frames myself. While autoconnect was selected, it doesn't mean the current frame and next similarly tagged frame are connected. Autoconnect will only cause FrameMaker to create a new page should content in the current text frame overflow. Next time, you can connect two frames by selecting each frame in turn and choosing File>Customize Layout>Connect Text Frames. Eric L. Re: student/tutor page layout
I have a few HTML links to other web sites. In FM, I insert them using the Hypertext marker text: message URL http://www.techpubs.com In the WW help file, the links open in a new browser. RE: Figure number updating
Eric L. Dunn Senior Technical Writer "Patricia Carmel" wrote on 06/19/2006 10:39:45 AM: > There was a disconnect between my first page, where the first figure > appeared and the next page, where the second figure appeared, which > is why the second figure thought it was the first one. RE: Figure number updating
Thanks. Unfortunately, I have experienced numbering problems if the caption is a text frame within the anchored frame. If the anchored frames are copied, and not created from scratch, the numbering sequence eventually breaks. But for that to happen in ALL your files seems bizarre.
/Nanna ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

What exactly is a FrameMaker "typesetter"? And, why the absolute need for on-site availability? Re: student/tutor page layout
Hi Dave, One clean way to do it is to make a PDF of the student guide and import each page as a graphic onto the left hand pages of the facilitator's guides. Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing 585-659-8267 www.frameexpert.com Hi Folks One of our trainers has asked me to help with a layout question for a new training manual.
