Re: Deja Vu?? Was: Using SAVE AS PDF in FrameMaker 6.0
According to Shlomo Perets' website (http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html) people have reported issues with FM7.x and Save As PDF when using Win98, or tagged PDF, or custom page sizes, or Acrobat 6.x. We seem to be fine with it, but we're not using any of the above. ;-) Cheers, Rebecca Diane Gaskill [EMAIL PROTECTED] 18/07/06 17:45 During the years before Frame 7.0 was released, there were many, many messages on this list regarding using Save As PDF in FM 6.0. It worked for a few people who happened to have the right printer driver set up but many people complained that they were not getting the results they needed. A certain Adobe employee who sometimes posts on this list said many times, DON'T USE Save As PDF in FM 6.0 because it is badly broken and usually gives undesired results. When FM 7.0 was released, that same employee did announce on this list that Save As PDF works correctly in FM 7.0 and was OK to use. Personally, however, I still print to postscript and then distill. It always works. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is there a workaround? (Other than don't rename the file...) As I mentioned earlier, some of the older FrameMaker 5.x versions specify internal links with a file name target, in which case renaming the PDF causes bad links (even when the PDF is stand-alone, with no links pointing to it from other PDFs). Upon further examination, I was able to reproduce the creation of PDF links which use a filename even though the link is internal in FrameMaker 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2, but only when Save as PDF was used. In the same tests, the problem was not encountered even once when printing books to a .ps file and then distilling to PDF. Given this FrameMaker bug, we may have yet another reason to stick to the original PDF file names, yet another reason to print to .ps rather than Save as PDF, and yet another reason to test PDF links carefully... Even though you end up repeating some of each pgf 3 times, it's much cleaner, easier to maintain, and less error-prone. It's my opinion and it's very true. ;-) Richard -- Richard G. RE: Looking for a technique for applying conditionals
This is rather off-topic: You're not working for Oracle by any chance, are you? At Oracle I had to deal with all four OSes: Win32, Solaris, Linux, and HP-UX. I didn't bother with conditionals, though. We had one manual to cover everything, and put all four in the same manual. I also discovered that the three variations of UN*X had enough differences between them that conditionals within a paragraph or even section wouldn't have been that useful. Just a note. Also, this meant that the technical marketing team decided to list each OS separately instead of just saying UN*X. This may not be what Linux or HP-UX people want to hear, but I think it's a useful distinction. Looking for a technique for applying conditionals
Hi, guys...I'm reworking our boilerplate to allow a more accurate application of our conditional settings from the perspective of operating systems. Our applications support anywhere from one to four operatings systems (Window, Solaris, Linux, and HP-UX). Sometimes we are specific between the four and sometimes we group the last three under the catch-all of UNIX. (sorry, open sourcers...this aint gonna change) My issue: I have some instances where they are listed in a bullet list, which makes it easy to apply the conditionals as I need them. However, some instances use OS specific references in a sentence. Following is an example of one. - This utility collects version information and saves the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to a .tar file (UNIX) or a .zip file (Windows). - I'm looking for a way to apply conditionals so that when applied, the sentence becomes: - This utility collects version information and saves the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to a .tar file (UNIX). and This utility collects version information and saves the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to a .zip file (Windows). --- The tricky part is the word "or". When both OSs are used, the 'or" has its place. However, when either OS is used to the exclusion of the other, the "or" should be removed. Short of rewriting the paragraph, has anyone worked out how to deal with this situation? My advice: Use three conditions, Win, Unix, and Both, and three _complete_ paragraphs, one for each condition. Applying conditions to a word here and there is just asking for trouble -- extra spaces or spaces missing, etc. Conditionalize at the pgf level (or at least, at the sentence level). Even though you end up repeating some of each pgf 3 times, it's much cleaner, easier to maintain, and less error-prone. "It's my opinion and it's very true." ;-) Richard -- Richard G. If a recruiter doesn't know what the job is, time to find a new recruiter. Most ads for media tech writer I've seen are exactly the same as what you'd expect from a tech writer. Why they add "media" to the title, I don't know. Maybe for flair? Pizzazz? On 7/18/06, Nandini G wrote: > I got a call today from a recruiter and he wanted to know what a media technical writer is. However, I do agree about the problms with conditionalizing at the word level...just hoping that someone will come out with an "ah HAH!" technique. But eventually, in my experience, every attempt and conditionalising becomes too complex very quickly. Eric L. Looking for a technique for applying conditionals
Also, this meant that the technical marketing team decided to list each OS separately instead of just saying "UN*X". This may not be what Linux or HP-UX people want to hear, but I think it's a useful distinction.
