Table Title doesn't appear when retag table (content imported from Word)

2006-08-16 Thread Art Campbell
After the import, before you try retagging, you may want to save to
MIF and open that file in FM. It's pretty well documented that Word's
hidden control characters often survive an import and can cause all
kinds of "inreresting" and unexpected behavior. So I think that would
be my starting point.

If that didn't fix it, in FM I'd try converting the table to
paragraphs, saving to MIF and reopening, and then converting the paras
to the correct table format.

how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-16 Thread rebecca officer
You also need to test THOROUGHLY if you do this. I played with a heap of
the dialog boxes a while ago and everything seemed fine. Then next time
I used Save As PDF, frame crashed. Sigh.

Cheers, Rebecca

>>> "Joe Malin"  16/08/06 12:11 >>>
I noted previously that most FM dialogs have both static and dynamic
controls. If you resize the dialog box and move around the static
controls, you risk damaging the dynamic behavior.

Developers define static controls in "resource files" which get
compiled
into executables or DLLs. Developers generate dynamic controls as the
program is running, by issuing Windows API calls. If you modify the
static controls or the dialog box containing them, you may end up
putting a static control at the same place a dynamic control is
supposed
to appear.

Make a backup copy of fmdlg.dll before you start hacking (but you knew

this anyway, right?). I tried to do this just a week ago with FM 7.2
but
FM complained when booting, then died. I don't know if the fmdlg.dll

some

of the buttons, etc. as well as generally enlarging the dialogue, so
perhaps that was it. Has anybody successfully hacked FM 7.2

need FrameMaker 7.0 and 7.1 feature lists

If my employer wants me to be able to write at home, they've paid for
the upgrade.

Also, although I haven't poured over the license agreement lately, I
think that FM, like most Adobe products, can legally be installed on
two machines provided they aren't operating at the same time.

And if I remember correctly, both the 7.0-7.1 and 7.2 upgrades were
$199. If you're an independant contractor... it's a cost of doing
business.

My manager has give approval for me to hire a documentation contractor

The FrameMaker 6 license allows installation on a *home computer* in
addition to an office computer, for the use of the same person.

In FrameMaker 7, the reference to the additional computer was limited to a
*portable computer* (and home computer was omitted).
[By comparison, in Acrobat and Photoshop, the additional computer can be
either a home or a portable computer.]

I wasn't sure whether it was some sort of an editing mistake that made its
way to the EULA. I asked, and was told by Michael Hu, Senior Product
Manager for Adobe FrameMaker, that the difference was intentional.

Accordingly it seems as if FM7 users who want to take some work home and
use a dekstop computer and not a portable one, need an additional license.

Find someone local who works as an independent and who
can do it direct. Your company will have no overheads
such as recruiter costs, and the work will stay in
this country. That person will probably do a better
job because they should be able to come on site if
needed to meet with those involved in the project.

I just paid $199 to upgrade from 7.0. Didn't want to do it, but client
requirements forced it. Wow, multiple undo.

Re: need FrameMaker 7.0 and 7.1 feature lists

If my employer wants me to be able to write at home, they've paid for
the upgrade.

Also, although I haven't poured over the license agreement lately, I
think that FM, like most Adobe products, can legally be installed on
two machines provided they aren't operating at the same time.

And if I remember correctly, both the 7.0-7.1 and 7.2 upgrades were
$199. If you're an independant contractor... it's a cost of doing
business.

OT: Looking for an offshore headhunter

2006-08-16 Thread Jon Harvey
Hi all,

I know what kind of discussion this can get into but I'd like to ask a
question anyway.

My manager has give approval for me to hire a documentation contractor
as long as that person can be gotten from an offshore locale where the
expense isn't as high as it would be to hire someone in the U.S. We've
used other offshore companies in the past with some success but don't
want to end up being dependent on them-we'd like to diversify our list
of vendors. Can anyone recommend a headhunter or how to go about finding
one offshore?

Can't add word to dictionary

2006-08-16 Thread Larry Bonura
I've been using FrameMaker v7.0p579 for a long while now and have run the spell
checker many times. Recently I've been trying to run spell check and I get the
following error: "You cannot add xxx to a dictionary. To add xxx to a
dictionary, first deselect the corresponding Find setting in the Spelling
Checker Option dialog box." I've gone to the box, but I don't see how I can
resolve this issue in this way. What is this really telling me to do? I've
searched the Adobe site, the web, read the docs, but nothing is mentioned in

RE: Sorting Indexes

2006-08-16 Thread Debbi Correia
Hi Rick,
I don't have experience with Ukrainian, but I've worked with many other
languages. You can change the sort order of a single entry by including
sort information in brackets after the entry in the Marker dialog box
(this is shown clearly in the online help).

I assume what you are asking is more detailed than this, and that you
want to change the way the entire index gets sorted based on the
Ukrainian language. To do this, go to the IX reference page and change
the entries in the SortOrderIX paragraph. By default the index is sorted
by <$symbols><$numerics><$alphabetics>, but you can rearrange these
three buildings blocks if desired. Obviously <$numerics> includes the
numbers 0-9 and <$alphabetics> includes all alpha characters. The
<$symbols> building block includes any characters that aren't listed
under <$numerics> or <$alphabetics>, and they get sorted by ASCII value.
You can replace any of these building blocks with character that you
type in manually for more control over the order, or to include a
character from one section in another instead. For example, instead of
using the <$alphabetics> building block, type in all of the letters in
the order in which they should appear -- including upper and lowercase
letters!

Hope that helps!

Changing dialog boxed size

FM7.x EULA, additional computer (was: need FrameMaker 7.0 and 7.1 feature lists)

Art,

You wrote:

Hello Melissa,

I have done this work for most of the dialogs of the unstructured
interface - and did not encounter any problems since with the
'dynamicylly' assigned control elements.

Hi Roger,

IMHO this can only happen, if
- you create a new document while the FM main window is maximised
- and then Restore the window size of the main window to a smaller
size. This will crop the document window, but you get scross bars on
the main window.

(see attached screen shot)

If you have Shlomo Perets' Toolbar Plus (www.microtype.com)
installed, there is a context menu item on graphics to set the Tools
Palette to the properties of the current graphic object (Pick up
Object Properties) - then use the settings for the next object.

2006-08-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Usually, the absence of para and character catalog icons in right side
of doc window indicates that your document is "locked" or a "hypertext"
document. I don't know how this would occur when you first create a
document, but try the following keyboard shortcut to unlock the
document: ESC F l k (Escape, the cap F, the lowercase "L" then lowercase
"K"). This shortcut toggles in making a document locked or unlocked.

The other thing to check would be your computer monitor settings; that
you don't have part of your FrameMaker window extending beyond the right
edge of the screen. Check to see if you have a long horizontal scroll
bar at the bottom of the window.

Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2

2006-08-16 Thread Aronsson, Martin
In this document: http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/faq.pdf,
Adobe states "binary file format compatibility" between 7.0 and 7.2
versions, so I presume this goes for 7.1 as well, otherwise I'd be
_very_ surprised!

I've
searched the Adobe site, the web, read the docs, but nothing is mentioned in
any of them about this.Thanks.Larry S. BonuraP.O. Box 831038Richardson TX

It would be only two to three days' work. Then Adobe could release it as

Shared files

2006-08-16 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

When using shared FM files, what you do when you have a cross-reference
within a shared file to a chapter that is not shared. The same
cross-reference will reference a non-shared file from book A and another
non-shared file in book B. Does this present a problem? Can I use
conditional text for the cross-reference? Will I get unresolved
cross-reference errors?

Changing dialog boxed size

2006-08-16 Thread Michael Zaichenko

Hello All,
I'm seeing about 20 messages about Changing Defaults on Tools
Palette in my e-mail. I had similar problems - moreover I work with
unicode languages and those dialog boxes are all Japanese when it
comes to Unicode. Can't read them. I found a solution by getting a
ResHacker from the net - its a shareware. With it you can open
fmdlg.dll file and edit dialog boxes to your taste. Check it out.
Don't remember what the site was but I'm sure if you type
ResHacker.exe in your Google it will find it.

I'd like to know the answer to this too. I've found that the tools
palette settings reset to the default if you change the DPI of an
image. This would be fine if I could set the default settings. As it
stands now, what I do is apply the color and pen width to the graphic
inside the anchored frame in addition to applying it to the anchored
frame...then I can use the Pick up Object Properties function to
restore the color and pen width to the tools palette.

Re: Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-16 Thread Michael Zaichenko

Hello All,
I'm seeing about 20 messages about Changing Defaults on Tools Palette in my
e-mail. I had similar problems - moreover I work with unicode languages and
those dialog boxes are all Japanese when it comes to Unicode. Can't read
them. I found a solution by getting a ResHacker from the net - its a
shareware. With it you can open fmdlg.dll file and edit dialog boxes to your
taste. Check it out. Don't remember what the site was but I'm sure if you
type ResHacker.exe in your Google it will find it.

Michael

RE: Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2

2006-08-16 Thread Aronsson, Martin
In this document: http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/faq.pdf,
Adobe states "binary file format compatibility" between 7.0 and 7.2
versions, so I presume this goes for 7.1 as well, otherwise I'd be
_very_ surprised!
