XSL on export

2006-09-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello All,

Structured FrameMaker allows you to open an XML file and edit it in
FrameMaker, while retaining the XML extension. This leads me to the
question: What happens if you have your application set to use XSL on
export, and you save an XML file that is open with FrameMaker? It doesn't
seem like FrameMaker would be able to apply the stylesheet to the XML file
if it is open in FrameMaker. Does anyone know what happens or how this is
supposed to work? Thanks in advance.

XSL on export

2006-09-15 Thread Rick Quatro
I just answered my own question with a test. The stylesheet DOES get
applied, even though the XML file is still open in FrameMaker. Of course,
the changes that the stylesheet makes are not reflected in the open
FrameMaker document unless you first close the document and attempt to
reopen it.

I say *attempt* to reopen it, because you may need an import stylesheet so
that the XML file will open without errors, depending on what was done by
the export stylesheet. So, it is possible to render an XML file that is
currently open and being edited in FrameMaker as unopenable after it is
closed.

Is there a setting somewhere to prevent you from saving an XML document in
FrameMaker? For example, if you open a text file with FrameMaker, it will
retain the .txt extension until you attempt to save the file. You will then
get the Save As dialog box so you can save it as a FrameMaker binary (.fm)
document. Based on the above discussion, this behavior may be desireable for
XML files. Thanks.

Robohelp vs. WebWorks EPublisher Pro

2006-09-15 Thread Mike Feimster
Gillian,

It sounds like WWeP Pro is a better fit for your workflow. With WWeP,
you can pretty much create help by running a single command without any
post-processing.

With RH, you have to create a new project, import the Frame docs, and
then create the help. Oh, you'll most likely have to do a handful of
steps between importing the docs and creating the help. This will have
to happen every time you want to create a help file, whereas with WWeP,
you should only have to set up the project once.

Adobe has announced that they will update RH, but that won't happen
until next year. The only thing we know is that Frame and RH are in the
same product group.

Guys,

I am considering upgrading from WebWorks 7.0 to either WebWorks
ePublisher Pro or Robohelp X5. What experiences have you guys had with
both - going from Frame 7.0 to these, single-sourcing files, of course?

Which do you like better?
Does Robohelp have an edge since it's also an Adobe product?

What do you recommend?

My final output is a .chm file.

Thank you,

We used that method back when we only had an occasional Visio drawing,
and it was OK for that. It is, of course, Windows-only, relying on
Microsoft's OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) protocol. OLE2, actually,
which is more stable than the original OLE.

For docs with more Visio drawings (one file has over 60 in it), I
wouldn't dream of using OLE. Here's one reason: I have a 14-page file
that contains three half-page Visio diagrams. The current version
(Visios imported by ref as PDFs) is 67KB. An older version -- little
difference in text, Visios as linked (not embedded) objects -- is 595KB.

YMMV.

OutStart has indicated that it is possible to create Framemaker output

Angled heads with PostScript code

2006-09-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello All,

I don't know if I am remembering correctly, but I seem to recall in an early
version of FrameMaker, there was an example of using PostScript code to
angle table cells at a non-standard angle. It was probably done with
PostScript text frames. If anybody remembers any details or has any
information about doing this, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi, Rick:

I seem to remember .ps examples, too. I think one was for transitions
that would happen in PDFs. I also seem to remember a sample, either .ps
or MIF, that made a pie chart.

Have you tried creating what you need in a FrameMaker file, then
printing to .ps and also to MIF to see how it's exported?

Since FrameMaker table cells only rotate in 90? increments, solutions
are probably something like:

* an angled text line or text frame in an anchored frame in a cell

* carefully sized imported graphic or graphics in single or straddled
heading/footing cells

My colors are gone

2006-09-15 Thread Robert Shelton
I'm working in a document I just took over from a writer who left. I want it to
use my styles, so I imported all formats--page layouts, paragraphs, characters,
color definitions, everything--from one of my other documents. Everything seems
to be working as expected, except that when I apply a character style that's
supposed to be red, the text disappears. I assume it's getting set to white
instead. When I re-apply the default paragraph font, the text goes back to
black.

I've checked the character definition and it definitely says red.

I've checked the document I copied the formats from, and it works fine there.

I've looked at the color definition for red, and it's red, all right.

I've tried applying the color directly, not through a character style. Same
problem.

I've tried using green instead of red. Same problem.

I've saved the file as a PDF, and the text is invisible there, too.

I've shut down and re-opened Frame, just in case.

Why won't my colors work?

Frame 7.0p578 on Win 2000 Pro.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Rick,

I've still got FM4 installation floppies hanging around. There is a
sample there that rotates text using PostScript text frames. Did you

I've been asked (again off-list) for more details: Somehow, a setting had been
changed on the Define Color Views dialog (on the View menu, select Color,

pdfFLY (www.pdf-fly.com) converts any drawing saved as PostScript or

Any windows application, including SmartDraw, Visio, could generate a
PostScript file
of the drawing, using the Print-to-File option.

I've just had an interesting discussion with Adobe European Support on the
issue of cross-grading from FrameMaker on Mac to FrameMaker on PC.

It seems to come down to this:

. Produce an invoice for the original purchase of FrameMaker (in my case, from
Frame Corp in 1991)

. Sign a 'letter of destruction' from Adobe vowing that you will never again
use FrameMaker on the Mac

. Pay the upgrade fee

and you then get FrameMaker for PC at the upgrade price. Adobe call this a
'cross-system procedure'.

However, I need to be able to retain the use of FrameMaker on Mac, where my
installations go back to FrameMaker Version 3, much as an upg

AltText Pop-ups

2006-09-15 Thread James Barrow
Hello All,

I'm creating pop-ups from images in my documentation. I'm doing this by
inserting ImageAreaAltText Markers in text frames defined in the graphics.

After regenerating my project the pop-ups appear like they're supposed to
when I pass my cursor over them. Unfortunately, these pop-ups remain
visible for ~5 seconds. With some pop-ups containing 255 characters, five
seconds is not enough time to read all of the AltText.

How do I modify the time that the pop-ups remain visible?

I've looked in the Scripts folder > PopUp.js, but I can't find the variable
that controls this.

Thanks,

Jim

good flowchart software to use with Frame

2006-09-15 Thread Smith, Terry
I use the "FrameMaker primitives" that Bill Briggs created. I added them
to AutoText (you do use the AutoText plug-in, right?), so I can just
select the piece I need from the AutoText menu, type the text, and then
add the next piece. Some final alignment at the end and it's done. Using
the combination of Bill's flowchart pieces and AutoText, I can
*complete* a simple flowchart with about twelve pieces in around five
minutes.

I also use Visio for many types of drawings. To keep the quality, I
export as a vector format: usually PDF (on the way to EPS), but
occasionally WMF. Remember that the Export to EPS option is (and always
has been) horribly broken in Visio. WMF is a vector format, but it has
many problems that I won't get into here. (WMF is still a handy format
sometimes, because you can give it to marketing guys to include in
PowerPoint. Double-clicking the WMF in PowerPoint makes it editable--at
which point it's not your problem anymore and the marketing guys can
tweak the colors and fonts happily all day.) For best results from
Visio, save to PDF, crop in Acrobat, export as EPS with a preview. It's
a bit of a chore, but worth it for some things. One hint that really
helps: put all your Visio pictures for one project in a single file.

Re: XSL on export

You will then
get the Save As dialog box so you can save it as a FrameMaker binary (.fm)
document. Based on the above discussion, this behavior may be desireable for
XML files. Thanks.

Rick

RE: Robohelp vs.

The only thing we know is that Frame and RH are in the
same product group.

ePublisher Pro or Robohelp X5. What experiences have you guys had with
both - going from Frame 7.0 to these, single-sourcing files, of course?

Which do you like better?
Does Robohelp have an edge since it's also an Adobe product?

What do you recommend?

My final output is a .chm file.

Yup. It was a trickle, now it's a stream. I'd like it stopped completely,

YMMV.

Since FrameMaker table cells only rotate in 90° increments, solutions
