Re: Searching for empty paragraphs

2007-10-04 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Pat,

Mekon has a plug-in called "mTools". It can remove empty paragraphs, but I'm
not sure what it does with the formatting of the paragraphs you want to
keep. It has been a while since I've used it.

You can find more information about mTools here:

http://www.mekon.com/Technology/A-Z/MTools/index.jsp

Kind regards

Based upon what we know, it is highly unlikely that the Acrobat 8.1
update has anything to do with the problems of "save as PDF" with
FrameMaker 8. Problems appear to be in FrameMaker 8. Update for

Re: Searching for empty paragraphs

2007-10-04 Thread Pat Christenson
The problem with that is when you replace it with \p (to get rid of
the empty), you lose the paragraph formatting you want to keep unless
both paragraphs (the "good" one and the empty one) use the same
format. That's what made ^\p such a good solution - you could replace
it with nothing.

A delicate question

2007-10-04 Thread Art Campbell
To figure a contract rate / range, I'd use your salary and add about
1/3 for the bennies that you'll have to pay. Then figure the number of
hours you want to work and how many weeks (or the number of days
you'll be employed). And that's the number with which you divide the
salary sum

Why am I losing page and column breaks?

Oh all right then, since we've both apologized, I won't keep to myself

making promises that won't be kept is the sport-du-jour anyway ;-)

I accept your apology.

Well, for hints on how to pose future questions, I suggest you just have
a look through the archives, or simply read the posts from others that
will appear in the interim. The ones that got or will get the fastest,
most accurate responses are good examples of well-described situations
and clearly stated problems.

People tell us what their layout is (side-heads or no, multiple master
pages or no, etc.), what the problem page consists of ("a big table that
continues overleaf"), what happened immediately before the problem
occurred (updated the book, imported a text inset, re-opened a file
saved on a server, etc.), and any other details that make the situation
unusual (or not). And of course, as I mentioned before, your OS and FM
version are important because in many cases the answer is dead simple:
such-and-such a version of FM for Windoze has a known bug, and here's
the work-around.

For your own situation, you might have told us about your page layout
(number of columns, feathered/balanced, proximity to straddling
paragraphs), whether the problem occurred on every page/column or just
in certain circumstances, the characteristics of the tags on affected
paragraphs, how the breaks were applied in the first place, what you did
that seemed to cause them to fail, and so on. Think about how you quiz
your SMEs when you're researching for your documentation, and you will
have put yourself in the shoes of framers who need information from you
in order to help. Too much information is better than too little, and
much better than none.

A delicate question

2007-10-04 Thread Karen L. Zorn
Better than STC salary survey, which I believe is sadly out of date, check
www.salary.com or the US labor department web site. Those numbers seem more
accurate.

I'd check the STC salary survey... stc.org, although it may be in a
protected area and you'd have to have a member send you a copy.

Re: A delicate question

2007-10-04 Thread Art Campbell
To figure a contract rate / range, I'd use your salary and add about
1/3 for the bennies that you'll have to pay. Then figure the number of
hours you want to work and how many weeks (or the number of days
you'll be employed). And that's the number with which you divide the
salary sum

My apologies, Natalie; I did not mean to offend. Obviously I should
have sprinkled the posting liberally with winking emoticons, as the
intended friendly jibe apparently didn't make it through cyberspace.

I admit it is a pet peeve of mine that so often people who are
supposedly "professional communicators" post (on this and other lists)
questions that border on the insulting, they are so haphazardly and
carelessly formed. Surely our peers deserve a little more effort on the
part of the questioners, out of simple respect (and self-respect).

If you didn't know what was causing your problem, how did you know that
no-one would need your OS and version information to solve it? Have you
never encountered version- or platform-specific bugs? It is
long-established netiquette to include such basic information as a
matter of course, though you are not by any means alone in omitting it.

I am happy that the psychics on this list were able to identify the
cause of your problem so quickly. Please do share the solution. I
promise to keep to myself in regard to any future postings from you.

(And thank you, Peter, Rick, Kelly, Richard, and Art, for your
supportive remarks.)

Ditto. Stuart's comment was fair; you can't help much if you don't
know the context.
I was sorely tempted to hit Reply to the OP and just say "yes."

Why am I losing page and column breaks?

2007-10-04 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Just a shot in the dark here, but were your page and column breaks
applied via manual overrides (using Special>Page Break), and did you
recently re-import your document formats? If so, you blew them away by
re-importing the template.
Manual overrides are rarely the way to go if you want any kind of
formatting consistency. You need to create paragraph tags with the
column break and page break built-in.

Why am I losing page and column breaks?

2007-10-04 Thread Kelly McDaniel
Wow, I sure missed Stuart's subtext.
Disclaimer: I do not know Stuart.

With over 36 years in computers and data wrangling, yep, pardner, over
36...since back in the steam-powered days of the big iron...
There was not enough information in the original question for me to
provide you with a response that was any better than a few targeted
guesses. I have come to the conclusion that the self-ascribed condition
is common amongst those with a bit of grey at the temples, or at least
enough trail dust in the nostrils, to have seen much of life.

My Dad used to irritate the living daylights out of me with his
protracted replies to questions I asked when I just wanted a quick nudge
over a hump in the fork of the road. Later in life, I understood what he
meant when he said, "I told you that to tell you this...so you'll
understand what I'm about to tell you."...then he'd go on. Time dragged.
I remember distinctly, the day in our garage when I was 12 years old and
asked Dad how it felt, what it was like to be "old" like he was? My
wisened, 33 year old Dad looked back and said, "I asked my Dad the same
question, and I have the same answer for you that he gave me: I still
feel like a kid inside. I'm just more careful when I play."

Let's all lean back in the saddle, let the reins go slack a minute, give
the pony a little break, and just take a deep breath...happy trails
y'all, Kelly.

I accept your apology.

I really, truly had no idea what type of information you would need to
answer such a question. A polite request for that information would have
been appropriate, and appreciated.

Bad Autonumbers

2007-10-04 Thread Fred Ridder

Ahh, based on this description, I think you need to look for some rogue
paragraph that is formatted with the same numbering series label (P) that you
are using in your document, but with some other definition. But because finding
such a rogue paragraph can be a real PITA, the easiest solution may be to
change the label in the tag(s) you are actually using so that there will no
longer be any interference.

But the autonumber isn't a page number, it's a paragraph number. You
need to set paragraph numbering to continue. Note, however, that this
affects all paragraph autonumber series; you can't have, for instance,
figure numbers restart while your package numbers continue.

Then trying to learn them concurrently with probably result in a poor
outcome. You should consider learning XML first, then how FrameMaker is
able to deal with XML data, then learn how DITA can be one type of XML
that FrameMaker can deal with. The third one might be some way down the
track though, if at all. Also, if you're only using DITA because it
means that you don't have to fiddle with the setup too much, then I
doubt if you need XML at all.

Why don't you tell us what you're trying to achieve instead of how
you're trying to do it?

I'm a little confused about what it is you are trying to do. You are talking
about a paragraph autonumber format, yet you are trying to control it
using the numbering properties setting for the Page numbering, which
is totally independent. The Page numbering properties settings only
affect the page number elements on the Master Pages, while paragraph
numbering formats only operate on Body Pages. Are you trying to use
paragraph numbering in a header or footer frame on a Master Page? If
so, that's your problem, because the header and footer frames are not
part of any Body Page flow.

If you need to specify a particular starting value for a paragraph
numbering series, you either do it from the Paragraph tab of the
Numbering Properties window, or else by using a hard-coded
autonumber definitions using the form "P:000<=8>" to implement
the example you mention. The next paragraph that uses the "P"
numbering series with the formula "P:000" will then increment
the number to 0009, and the next one after that will increment it
to 00010 (which may not be what you relly want, I'm guessing...).

Bad Autonumbers

2007-10-04 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I am not quite sure I understand what you are trying to do. It seems
to me you are mixing methods. On one hand you are using an
autonumbering of a paragraph and on the other hand you want to control
it with a system variable for page numbering. That, to my knowledge,
cannot be done. This is one of the things we are missing in FM: the
ability to assign leading zeros to the numbering. If you add leading
zeros like text in the autonumbering or before a page number the
number of zeros will always be the same.

One workaround would be to assign different set of master pages to
each given number of leading zeros (as I think I recall there was a
discussion about earlier this year). Whether you would have to
manually assign these master pages or you could make a [fake?]
paragraph or element that you put on the page starting the next level
(from 0009 to 0010 -- using the ref page master page assignment
system), would depend on your set of files.

There might be a possible solution doing this automatically with FrameScript.

Why am I losing page and column breaks?

2007-10-04 Thread Combs, Richard
Natalie Bircher wrote:

> Does anyone know why I would lose page and column breaks?

Kinda depends on how they were created (it never hurts to describe the
situation in a bit more detail, including software version, etc.).

IIRC, there's a Page Break menu item (I don't have it because I've
disabled all ad hoc formatting controls) that creates breaks by applying
overrides to pgf formats. If you subsequently import formats to the
document (from another doc or itself), you can optionally (and perhaps
unintentionally) remove those overrides.

Or, if the breaks came from pgf format definitions (Start or Keep With
settings, etc.), maybe importing formats or making changes in Paragraph
Designer and choosing Update All removed the relevant settings.

In my template, the pgf definitions (Start, Keep With, and Widow/Orphan
settings) take care of 98% of page breaks without any manual
intervention. For the occasional awkward exception, I use a small
PageBreak pgf set to 600 pt. Space Below. I find that easier to manage,
search for, etc., than pgf overrides. And it suits my compulsive need to
avoid overrides. :-)

HTH!

Of course -- good point. It's been so long since I used old-style
(pre-FM6) numbering series with FigureFirst tags, etc., that I didn't
think of that. So, Randall has one more thing to check besides the
file-level and book-level numbering settings: every friggin' pgf tag's

RE: Why am I losing page and column breaks?

"Times Font" - fixed in FM 8.0?

There's never been a "Times Font" bug that I'm aware of, and I can't
find any reference to one at Microtype's list of bugs and issues
(http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html).

Are you referring to the fact that FM's templates use a font named
Times, while your Windows PC ships with Microsoft's TrueType
semi-equivalent, Times New Roman? They aren't the same font. It would be
nice if FM had more user-friendly ways to resolve such issues than
editing the Fonts section of maker.ini, but the existing behavior
certainly isn't a bug.

It's not really a problem either, if you know how to deal with it. The
mapping from Times to Times New Roman is already present in your default
maker.ini. So, if you turn off Remember Missing Font Names (in File >
Preferences), you'll only get the missing font warning one more time for
each doc using Times. FM will permanently replace it with Times New
Roman when you save.

If you need to open FM files from others who use fonts you don't have,
you'll want to turn Remember Missing Font Names back on so that you
don't mess up their files.

RE: Why am I losing page and column breaks?

2007-10-04 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Just a shot in the dark here, but were your page and column breaks
applied via manual overrides (using Special>Page Break), and did you
recently re-import your document formats? If so, you blew them away by
re-importing the template.
Manual overrides are rarely the way to go if you want any kind of
formatting consistency. You need to create paragraph tags with the
column break and page break built-in.

But the autonumber isn't a page number, it's a paragraph number. You
need to set paragraph numbering to continue. Note, however, that this
affects all paragraph autonumber series; you can't have, for instance,
figure numbers restart while your package numbers continue.

RE: Bad Autonumbers

2007-10-04 Thread Fred Ridder

Ahh, based on this description, I think you need to look for some rogue
paragraph that is formatted with the same numbering series label (P) that you
are using in your document, but with some other definition. But because finding
such a rogue paragraph can be a real PITA, the easiest solution may be to
change the label in the tag(s) you are actually using so that there will no
longer be any interference.

Just to amplify a bit:

If you set a file's paragraph numbering properties to "Restart", you
cannot have a mixture of continuing and resetting counter values.
The "Restart" setting affects *all* paragraph numbering series and
there is no way for any of them to continue from the preceding
file's value.

But if you set the properties to "Continue", it *is* possible to reset
a specific paragraph numbering series by formatting a paragraph
with an autonumber formula that explicitly sets the appropriate
counter elements in the series definition to the desired values.

HTH!

But the autonumber isn't a page number, it's a paragraph number. You
need to set paragraph numbering to continue. Note, however, that this
affects all paragraph autonumber series; you can't have, for instance,
figure numbers restart while your package numbers continue.

Steve said, "I used the Scriptorium Press material. Worked for me." I
imagine that would be the materials described on "Books and self-study
materials by Scriptorium Press"
(http://www.scriptorium.com/books/index.html). I imagine he bought them.

Some of us still have this quaint notion that it's worth paying for
things of value to us. :-)

Re: Bad Autonumbers
