Ask the seller (if not already stated in the description) whether this
is an unused, sealed copy. By the rules of eBay, wrong information
will deem the seller to refund.

Do not ask for a serial number because the seller will probably know
that such information can (sometimes?) be used illegally on pirate

If it is a used copy, get his/her assertion that Adobe has been
advised of the selling and the former user has been de-registered off
the copy. Adobe cannot IMHO prevent anyone from selling his/her copy,
provided that the registration things are in order.

This info is based solely on my own experience with shopping on eBay

Re: Modularised EDDs?

2008-02-27 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi Hedley...

Yes .. you can do this, and it works quite well (as long as you don't
get too carried away with the modularization). A FM binary file can have
any element at the root .. it may be invalid but it will open fine and
if it's imported into a container EDD will work fine. Just keep in mind
that if you update one of the insets, you do still need to open the
root EDD and import that file into the template. Using this technique
along with variables to define chunks of the EDD is a good approach for
EDD maintenance.

Note that this is how the structapp stub files have been implemented in
DITA-FMx .. the stub files themselves are invalid, but when imported as
an inset into the structapps file, work fine.

Is there any way to create a modularised EDD, with a skeleton host
file and modules imported as text insets? I have been studying the
Adobe documentation for developing structured applications but cannot
find any reference to using text insets in this way. I read
somewhere a couple of years ago that EDD fragments always require a
root element that matches an element in the main host EDD skeleton,
which would rather undermine this idea. But perhaps there is a
special root element that can map onto ANY element in the host EDD --
 a new feature in FM8?

It seems to me that both the Adobe and Leximation EDDs could benefit
from modularisation that exactly maps onto the *.dtd and *.mod files
 of the DITA schemas/DTDs.

Some of the Pro fonts include Unicode font numerators, denominators, and

Hi,

My last company was on an austerity campaign when I started and I did my
provisioning off eBay with very mixed results. The FM transactions were
trouble-free -- the sealed boxes just as advertised. I can't say the same for
other Adobe products -- and neither eBay nor PayPal was a particle of use in
resolving conflicts or getting me a refund for bootleg software. I followed
their procedures to the letter and was still left holding the bag full of bad
software.

Dan (and anyone else looking to purchase Frame licenses)

I have a stack of retail Frame Frame+SGML still in the shrinkwrap and
never registered. I'd be happy to sell them.

I also have a stack of licenses predating Adobe's current EDU pricing model.
These are also available and will come with the official Adobe paperwork
allowing for transfer of license.

Sale of the license numbers is, of course, assuming I've not overstepped
bounds regarding sale of my Adobe-branded property! If so, I'm sure we'll
all hear about it shortly.

Either way, after upgrade costs, you'll still save a bundle.

Martin, Keith, and others:

Yes, Scott's answer is what I was after -- using text insets to build
modular EDDs to simplify maintenance and avoid duplicating element
substructures and attributes over and over in different locations on
the master element tree. As you point out, provided that a test
inset's root element fits nicely under an ancestor in the host
document, you can indeed use boilerplate in a document. However, FM
is going to complain about the structure of the text inset source not
being conformant to an EDD. I believe that there may be a way around
this but don't know what it is.

Text string in title case?

2008-02-27 Thread Tina Ricks
Hi all,

I'm trying to put many text strings (book titles) throughout a long book
into title case. I need to do this at the character level, not the
paragraph. For example, changing

THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK

to

The Title of This Book

So. it needs to have some logic, i.e. knows to skip conjunctions like of
and and etc.

I can see in the character designer how to change a set of characters to
small caps, lowercase, or uppercase. Does anyone know of a way to make this
ability go one step further and become title case?

I must be misunderstanding you because it sounds like a simple Find/Change
would do it.

1. In the Find/Change dialogue box, set Find to Text: The Title of This
Book. Make sure the Consider Case checkbox is unchecked and Find/Change
will find the phrase no matter what case it is.

2. In the Find/Change dialogue box, set Change to Text: The Title of This
Book (capitalized the way you want). That will do it. Of course, if you've
set Small Caps, Uppercase, or Lowercase in the Paragraph Format or
Character Format that contains the phrase, the setting will override the
intended result.

3. In the Find/Change dialogue, be sure that Book is selected. Then hit
Find.

If one wants to have a look at the character map of any font or compare
available characters in different fonts (say before deciding on which font

And as we can see in the attached screenshot its easily possible (after
checking advanced view and selecting Number Forms category) to check for the
available fractions in various fonts.

The only idea I can come up with is a wildcard search. In the Find/Change
dialogue check Consider Case and Use Wildcards. Then search for
[A-Z][A-Z][A-Z]. This will find all instances of three capital letters in a
row (and assumes no book titles have less than three capital letters). If
you know the shortest number of characters in a book title, you might add
more [A-Z] entries to eliminate finding ISBN and other acronyms. Anyway, the
wildcard search will find the book titles, but leave you stuck changing
their case manually. Maybe some of the better minds here will have an idea
how to do that.

See help for Finding and changing and Searching for special characters

I'm using an old version of Shlomo Perets' extremely useful expanded toolbar
and it has a button to change the selected string to sentence case. It says the
keyboard shortcut is Alt+F2. That may be generic on all systems, even those

Modularised EDDs?

2008-02-27 Thread Hedley Finger

Lynne Price, Kay Whatley and others:

The DITA DTDs are modularised to allow ready re-use, specialisation
and maintenance.

Regards,
Hedley

Modularised EDDs?

2008-02-27 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi Hedley...

Yes .. you can do this, and it works quite well (as long as you don't
get too carried away with the modularization). A FM binary file can have
any element at the root .. it may be "invalid" but it will open fine and
if it's imported into a container EDD will work fine. Just keep in mind
that if you update one of the insets, you do still need to open the
"root" EDD and import that file into the template. Using this technique
along with variables to define chunks of the EDD is a good approach for
EDD maintenance.

Note that this is how the structapp stub files have been implemented in
DITA-FMx .. the stub files themselves are invalid, but when imported as
an inset into the structapps file, work fine.

Cheers,

Registering a new FrameMaker license

2008-02-27 Thread Susan Modlin

I followed
their procedures to the letter and was still left holding the bag full of bad
software.

YMMV

Registering a new FrameMaker license

2008-02-27 Thread Matt Sullivan
Dan (and anyone else looking to purchase Frame licenses)

I have a stack of retail Frame & Frame+SGML still in the shrinkwrap and
never registered.

Either way, after upgrade costs, you'll still save a bundle.

of the problem is to be sure the copy is not already

buying the product on Ebay is eligible for

Also, I looked aroun on the Adobe website for the
subject of how to register Framemaker as the crucial
step in buying an upgrade.

Frame doesn't complain about invalid structure if it's in an FM binary

Text string in title case?

2008-02-27 Thread Tina Ricks
Hi all,

I'm trying to put many text strings (book titles) throughout a long book
into title case. I need to do this at the character level, not the
paragraph. For example, changing

THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK

to

The Title of This Book

So. it needs to have some logic, i.e. knows to skip conjunctions like "of"
and "and" etc.

I can see in the character designer how to change a set of characters to
small caps, lowercase, or uppercase. Does anyone know of a way to make this
ability go one step further and become title case?

Text string in title case?

2008-02-27 Thread Mike Wickham
I must be misunderstanding you because it sounds like a simple Find/Change
would do it.

1. In the Find/Change dialogue box, set Find to Text: "The Title of This
Book." Make sure the "Consider Case" checkbox is unchecked and Find/Change
will find the phrase no matter what case it is.

2. In the Find/Change dialogue box, set Change to Text: "The Title of This
Book" (capitalized the way you want). That will do it. Of course, if you've
set "Small Caps," "Uppercase," or "Lowercase" in the Paragraph Format or
Character Format that contains the phrase, the setting will override the
intended result.

3. In the Find/Change dialogue, be sure that "Book" is selected. Then hit
Find.

Text string in title case?

2008-02-27 Thread Tina Ricks
Sorry... I wasn't clear. Search/replace won't work.

It's lots and lots of different book titles, all throughout a 600 page
manuscript. This is a legal textbook with loads of footnotes, which contain
references to many other works. The previous author set all the book titles
in all caps, now they need to be cap/lowercase (title case).

So a search/replace doesn't work. I'm trying to avoid retyping all these
titles. Seems like the best so far is to change the case to lower, and
retype the initial caps where needed.

If one wants to have a look at the character map of any font or compare
available characters in different fonts (say before deciding on which font
to use, etc.), the character map can be accessed from Start Menu --> All
Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map.

And as we can see in the attached screenshot its easily possible (after
checking advanced view and selecting Number Forms category) to check for the
available fractions in various fonts.

feature. This approach makes sense, because you would eliminate the
need for an expensive, XML-based content management system, which is
really what you need to deliver on all the hype surrounding DITA.

This is an area of interest of mine as well, and I think I have a
novel solution. Using the FrameScript language, I can easily encode a
section/topic element from a FrameMaker document in XML and store that
XML in an open-source, freely available database such as MySQL.

I can then insert a section/topic element in a different FrameMaker
document and have the option of importing one of the topics stored in
the database. The script fetches the XML from the database and
reconstructs all of the elements and text from the original root
element (topic, section, etc.), preserving any elements, attributes,
tables, equations, referenced graphics, and index markers.

I have already used this approach for an embedded help authoring
system that stores XML encoded content in a relational database. I
will soon be releasing a freely available script for storing and
retrieving topics in a database and will make the scripts and sample
files available for download on my web site. I will also offer a
commercial version that allows everyone in a work group to store and
retrieve topics in a database at a reasonable cost.

If this workflow is of interest to you, I would be happy to provide
you with beta versions of the script in exchange for your input.

Full disclosure: I am a FrameMaker internals developer and consultant
and run a web site at http://www.golehtek.com that offers free and
commercial applications for Adobe FrameMaker based on the FrameScript
programming language.

Please reply with an email if you are interested. I would like to
learn more about what you are trying to achieve.

Best regards,

Martin

Text string in title case?

The only idea I can come up with is a wildcard search. In the Find/Change
dialogue check "Consider Case" and "Use Wildcards." Then search for
[A-Z][A-Z][A-Z].

See help for "Finding and changing " and "Searching for special characters
and nonprinting symbols" for more information.
