RE: Mif2Go - FM graphic sizing issue when outputting to HTML
Jeremy is correct. I initially sent this query to the list (Jeremy must get a squillion queries and I thought the list could answer this one) but for some reason it didn't get posted so after waiting 50 minutes or so I also sent the query direct to Jeremy (and corrected the ENBEDDED typo:)). Jeremy has since answered my query and I have since taken the necessary steps to resolve the issue. Thanks again Jeremy. A pity it took 4.5 hours for the posting to hit the list but fortunately Jeremy was much quicker. :) Let's see how long it takes for this one to be posted. Cheers, Bruce -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jeremy H. Griffith Sent: Wednesday, 7 May 2008 12:25 PM To: FrameUsers Subject: Re: Mif2Go - FM graphic sizing issue when outputting to HTML On Wed, 7 May 2008 07:33:20 +1000, bja [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote, but the list diddn't post it for some hours. In between, we answered the same post, also sent to us, directly: I have dozens of graphics EMBEDDED in my FrameMaker documents at various dpi settings. All print well of course. I convert to Standard HTML using Mif2Go. By default Mif2Go retains the FramaMaker image sizes so many of the graphics are unreadable in the finished HTML. To resolve this, I set the following statement in the mif2htm.ini file: [GraphScale] *=0 In the past (using FM7.1), this setting reverted the graphics back to their original DPI setting and undid any FM editing as well (such as rotation). Now, I am using FM8.0 and the above statement does not appear to work any more. It won't for embedded graphics, only for referenced. The reason is that with embedded graphics, we have to have Frame use its native graphic export filters to produce images, and those always resample the graphics to the DPI specified at the size of the anchored frame. This should have the same effect as the *=0 statement so I am wondering if there is something I am not taking into consideration or if this might be another FM8.0 issue. It's not 8.0, it's always the case for embedded graphics. Another reason that's a Real Bad Idea, as if more were needed... ;-) As an aside, I cannot test this as I am no longer on site and only have FM7.1 at home (I do have a copy of the mif2htm.ini file though). I am just trying to be of assistance to a previous manager so any help would be greatly appreciated. What you can do is labor-intensive, but you only have to do it once: change from embedded to referenced. If you still have the original graphics, you can re-import them by reference with the embedded one selected, and the referenced one will replace the embedded. If you *don't* have the originals, you can export the embedded ones from Frame with Mif2Go, rename them appropriately, then re-import as above. See par. 29.2.3.2, Exporting embedded graphics before converting. HTH! -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. I assume that the question relates to adding a cross-file bookmark in the PDF file, in Acrobat. In the bookmark properties, Actions, select the Go to a page view action, and click Add. A dialog box titled Create Go to View will be displayed. Open the target PDF file at the required location (using any method you prefer in Acrobat: File Open, Window, activating links in the current PDF etc.), then click the Set Link button in the Create Go to View dialog box. The relative path from the current PDF to the target PDF is registered in the bookmark action. OT: Adobe PS3 drivers
We are in the process of updating our PostScript color printer. Only a few seem to be offering true Adobe PS3 printers, but one of the agents (with a brand that seems to offer either one of true Adobe PS3 or a PS3 emulator) says that Adobe no longer provides drivers, only licenses for third parties to make those, resulting in diminishing offers of printers with the Adobe PS3 logo. Thanks everyone for all the good information. Here's what I've learned: 1. Framemaker 7.0: Classroom in a Book is an excellent resource, regardless of what the reviews on Amazon says. 2. O'Keefe's book, Publishing Fundamentals: Framemaker 7.0 (previously known as Framemaker 7.0: The Complete Reference) is also an excellent resource. It's available through www.scriptorium.com as a PDF, and there are plans in the works to publish an upated version for Framemaker 8.0. 3. Scriptorium publishes a number of books about Framemaker, and they offer training courses also. (All of this is for posterity -- for someone searching the archives -- hope it help!) RE: Adobe PS3 drivers
Bodvar, You are NOT being given very accurate information from your so-called agent. First of all, Adobe has not provided its own PostScript driver since Windows NT 4 and Windows'98 days. Since then (i.e., for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista, and Windows 2008 Server), the driver distributed by Microsoft with Windows, the PSCRIPT5.DLL driver, is the driver that was developed by a collaboration of Adobe with Microsoft and now maintained by Microsoft. Virtually all Adobe's OEMs package up this driver along with some added-value plug-ins along their products. (Providers of CloneScript devices often do likewise, although many of them distribute a fairly unreliable PostScript driver sourced from other companies - a separate discussion.) There are a good number of printers available with Adobe PostScript 3. They are available from Xerox, OKI, Ricoh, Xanté, Dell, Fuji Xerox, and others. Some high end printer vendors sell their print engines with EFI RIPs or Spire RIPs that all use Adobe PostScript 3. The availability of these printers has nothing to do with drivers. A fully functional PostScript driver is delivered by Microsoft with every copy of Windows. (Note that the Adobe Universal PostScript Driver Installer available on Adobe's website has not been updated since the days of Windows 2000. For Windows 2000 and later, all it does is use the system's own PostScript driver and associates it with a user designated PPD file, similar to how the built-in Windows Add Printer Wizard works. This installer is a 16-bit installer and does not work properly with Windows Vista nor with any 64-bit Windows version.) Does that answer your question?!? - Dov -Original Message- From: Bodvar Bjorgvinsson Sent: Wednesday, May 07, 2008 8:33 AM To: Frame Users Subject: OT: Adobe PS3 drivers We are in the process of updating our PostScript color printer. RE: Framemaker Uses
Now that Rene mentions it ... When I wrote SUSE Linux 10 Unleashed, a couple years ago, my editors at Sams Publishing said they accepted FM and Word files, but since it was a Linux book, doing it in Frame wasn't practical (way too much rebooting involved). For the 2nd edition (openSUSE Linux Unleashed--in better bookstores everywhere now), I didn't even think about it. But I would guess that more than one book from Sams/Prentice-Hall/Peachpit/whoever else is in that part of the publishing universe has been written using FrameMaker. Book file too big
Hello Framers, I have a book that consist of close to 500 files. The total page count is shy of 900. The problem: I cannot print a .pdf. I've created mifs to correct the issue in a given file and it worked, but then a few files down it did it on another file. I mifed ALL the files, tried to print to PDF again and now it stopping on one particular page. I've mifed it, I've saved the content in a new file container, blah blah. It won't go budge! Is it possible this book, with umpteen xrefs to other files in the book is just maxed out? Any insight is much appreciated! Document control
Hey I'm full of questions today! The question du jour (du minute?) is about document control. Does anyone have any advice they'd like to share about developing a system for keeping track of who is currently working on a document, who has worked on a document, and who has made what changes? What I've done in the past (with Word) is have people put their initials at the end of the file name so we could all see at a glance who was currently working on the document. At my current job, we have a Project file to keep track of who is working on what. Our engineering staff uses some kind of card that people initial when the document changes hands, so that's an option also. But none of these solutions really speaks to the drafting stage, where the document changes hands quite a lot before it is ready to be reviewed. Anyhow, I was hoping one or more of you might have suggestions. Thanks! Thai Docs/Font problem in FM8
Hi All, I'm running FM8.0p273 on WinXP. I have a couple of Thai documents that were created with an AngsanaUPC font. In Frame 7, they show up fine and can be manipulated, printed, etc. In Frame 8, the characters turn to garbage. This happens on my laptop as well as another machine. I've tried reapplying the font and changing it to Angsana New, but nothing works. I took an old laptop and loaded Frame 7 onto it, and the Thai documents open fine. Has anyone else seen this problem in Frame 8 or know how to fix it? TIA. (I'm on digest, so please apply directly. I'll post to the list if a fix is found.) ~ Susan A. Re: Framemaker Uses
I can't speak for fiction or magazines but I do layout of technical books for a couple of commercial publishers. They both have the authors writing in Word using a very simple template. (The thinking is: The books are written by subject matter experts who are not necessarily technical writers. Almost everyone has Word; very few have FrameMaker or other layout applications, nor would they be willing to purchase anything as pricey as Frame. In any case, the publishers prefer the writers not to focus on design.) Once the content is final, it's turned over to a compositor (me or someone like me) who then lays it out for press. In my experience, more of these books are laid out in Quark or InDesign than in FrameMaker. FrameMaker is widely used by corporate pubs or tech pubs groups to produce manuals such as you describe (Maintenance Manuals, Aircraft Maintenance Manuals, Wiring Diagram Manuals, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs). Hope that helps - Pat Christenson On May 7, 2008, at 9:04 AM, Deirdre Reagan wrote: Just out of curiosity, what kinds of documents are people producing in Framemaker? Mif2Go - FM graphic sizing issue when outputting to HTML
Hi everyone. I have dozens of graphics ENBEDDED in my FrameMaker documents at various dpi settings. All print well of course. I convert to HTML using Mif2Go. By default Mif2Go retains these image sizes so many of the graphics are unreadable in the finished HTML. Looking at the Mif2Go user guide, it says: - Image size Screen captures might be unreadable with "out-of-the-box" options. By default, Mif2Go retains the image size specified in your FrameMaker document. However, when you "Save as" HTML, FrameMaker produces the graphics unscaled. To do the same with Mif2Go, set the following option: [Graphics] GraphScale = No This setting determines whether Mif2Go writes width and height attributes; when GraphScale=No those attributes are omitted from HTML output. This should have the same effect as the previous statement so I am wondering if there is something I am not taking into consideration or if this might be another FM8.0 issue. As an aside, I cannot test this as I am no longer on site and only have FM7.1 at home (I do have a copy of the mif2htm.ini file though). I am just trying to be of assistance to a previous manager so any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Bruce Ashley

It won't for embedded graphics, only for referenced. The reason is that with embedded graphics, we have to have Frame use its native graphic export filters to produce images, and those always resample the graphics to the DPI specified at the size of the anchored frame. >This should have the same effect as the *=0 statement so I am wondering >if there is something I am not taking into consideration or if this >might be another FM8.0 issue. It's not 8.0, it's always the case for embedded graphics. I am >just trying to be of assistance to a previous manager so any help would >be greatly appreciated. I assume that the question relates to adding a cross-file bookmark in the PDF file, in Acrobat. In the bookmark properties, Actions, select the "Go to a page view" action, and click Add. A dialog box titled "Create Go to View" will be displayed. Open the target PDF file at the required location (using any method you prefer in Acrobat: File > Open, Window, activating links in the current PDF etc.), then click the Set Link button in the "Create Go to View" dialog box. The relative path from the current PDF to the target PDF is registered in the bookmark action. OT: Adobe PS3 drivers
We are in the process of updating our PostScript color printer. Only a few seem to be offering true Adobe PS3 printers, but one of the agents (with a brand that seems to offer either one of true Adobe PS3 or a PS3 emulator) says that Adobe no longer provides drivers, only licenses for third parties to make those, resulting in diminishing offers of printers with the "Adobe PS3" logo. (All of this is for posterity -- for someone searching the archives -- hope it help!) Adobe PS3 drivers
Virtually all Adobe's OEMs package up this driver along with some added-value "plug-ins" along their products. (Providers of CloneScript devices often do likewise, although many of them distribute a fairly unreliable PostScript driver sourced from other companies - a separate discussion.) There are a good number of printers available with Adobe PostScript 3. They are available from Xerox, OKI, Ricoh, Xant?, Dell, Fuji Xerox, and others. Some high end printer vendors sell their print engines with EFI RIPs or Spire RIPs that all use Adobe PostScript 3. The availability of these printers has nothing to do with drivers. A fully functional PostScript driver is delivered by Microsoft with every copy of Windows. (Note that the "Adobe Universal PostScript Driver Installer" available on Adobe's website has not been updated since the days of Windows 2000. For Windows 2000 and later, all it does is use the system's own PostScript driver and associates it with a user designated PPD file, similar to how the built-in Windows "Add Printer Wizard" works. This installer is a 16-bit installer and does not work properly with Windows Vista nor with any 64-bit Windows version.) Does that answer your question?!? - Dov > -Original Message- > From: Bodvar Bjorgvinsson > Sent: Wednesday, May 07, 2008 8:33 AM > To: Frame Users > Subject: OT: Adobe PS3 drivers > > We are in the process of updating our PostScript color printer. Title of document in Acrobat title bar
Ah, in Properties, General tab I found the field, so I just changed it manually. Thanks for the other ideas, too. I am in the process of changing over to FM 8 and Acrobat 8, but this book was too late in the game to convert now. I'll have to figure out how to get this to work automagically in that combo. I do have TimeSavers, so it may be an option there. ~ Linda G. Now that Rene mentions it ... When I wrote "SUSE Linux 10 Unleashed," a couple years ago, my editors at Sams Publishing said they accepted FM and Word files, but since it was a Linux book, doing it in Frame wasn't practical (way too much rebooting involved). For the 2nd edition ("openSUSE Linux Unleashed"--in better bookstores everywhere now), I didn't even think about it.
Heidi _ Get Free (PRODUCT) RED?
Thanks! Deirdre

Because it keeps stopping at the same place, Rick's suggestion that the page probably has some content on it that's causing your problem is probably right on. Look at the page and see if there are any imported graphics, unresolved cross refs anything that is not quite right. Unless you're on a really underpowered machine without enough temp space to create working files, FM isn't anywhere near maxxed out It'd be helpful if you'd basic trouble shooting info such as your OS, version of Frame, version of Acrobat, and any network info that may apply.
Document control
You need to use version control software like CVS or subversion. Then you submit all source files to a network directory visible to all Tech Writers. Then each TW has to checkout the file in order to work on it and check it back in when finished. All you have to do is look in the version control software and it displays who the doc is checked out to. I can't speak for fiction or magazines but I do layout of technical books for a couple of commercial publishers. They both have the authors writing in Word using a very simple template. (The thinking is: The books are written by subject matter experts who are not necessarily technical writers. "Almost everyone" has Word; very few have FrameMaker or other layout applications, nor would they be willing to purchase anything as pricey as Frame. Hope that helps - Pat Christenson On May 7, 2008, at 9:04 AM, Deirdre Reagan wrote: > Just out of curiosity, what kinds of documents are people producing in > Framemaker? > > Our department produces aeronautial documents, such as Component > Maintenance Manuals, Aircraft Maintenance Manuals, Wiring Diagram > Manuals, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs. > > Do people produce books and magazines with Framemaker?
