Re: Searching Framers archives (was RE: FrameMaker on Japanese OS)

2008-05-14 Thread Paul Findon
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the workarounds.

You can use Google. Enter search string site:frameusers.com (sans
quotes). Or you can browse the archives (by thread, subject,
 author, or
 date) at: http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/

FWIW, I downloaded the archives to my Mac and searched them en masse
using TextWrangler, a text editor.

That said, a Google search for framemaker update site:frameusers.com
turned up some posts about the 8.0.1 update, but nothing about the
 issue
you mentioned. Maybe browsing the archives around the date of those
 posts will turn up something.

Crazy really, it was only yesterday, but I cannot for the life of me
remember the term I used to find that info. Tried 8.0.2, update,
downloading, manually, updater...

Still, it would be great to get proper searchable archives back
online. Yahoo Groups work well. Incidentally, when I set up my first
list using LISTSERV, I hacked together a Perl script to search the
list archives. I was really pleased with myself when I worked out how
to highlight the search term in red in the results :-)

I highly recommended using Sequential fields for numbering in Word. Read

Also, in Word, you can lock documents to force users to use only the
formatting you specifiy in a document.

I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle
numbering in Word. For me, it would help to fix garbaged numbers in

it's wrong, the structure requires a lot of manual correction.

Deirdre,

Doens't renaming Word's default Heading# styles just to accomodate hinky

generate TOCs and using outline view (well, that is one thing that is missing
in FM!)?

Is your coworker successfully creating PDFs from the books that give you

Are there any errors recorded in the log files?

It could be a font problem. Go to Distiller's Adobe PDF Settings dialog,
Fonts page, and make sure that it's set to embed fonts. And set When

Wondering if it's just my system or if others are having the same problem. I

Per the readme...

List of major issues resolved in this update.

* Extended characters have extra preceding space when using Arial Unicode MS

* FM catalogs don't sort properly.

* DITA Conref does not get resolved in some cases.

* Some higher code point characters are dropped on MIF open

* In documents with Japanese, Chinese and Korean combination fonts,
quotation marks look different than in FM7.x

* While using Combined Fonts, non-Asian characters present in the Asian font
are displayed using the Asian font instead of the non-Asian fonts.

* Random letters disappear from textline present in oval within anchored
Frame.

* Use of page range in Index randomly adds a couple of question marks left
and right in the generated index file.

* Characters become invisible on the screen on the next line while
hyphenating words just before the accented chars.

* The NextPfgTag remains the same when pressing Enter at the beginning of
the line.

* FM crashes when a document containing hypertext (spread over two lines) to
marker is saved.

* FM spellchecker does not make use of user.dct entries

* History palette does not record typing command in textline.

* FM crashes on saving a file after deleting split-ed text line.

* For a 3d imported by reference, on moving it from hidden to show all after
applying conditional text, the referenced path is lost and has facets which
are for u3d imported as copy

* Pressing space button at the start of line places cursor at the end of
line.

* Drag fails if the target happens to be a locked range.

* FM crashes when a graphic file with object properties dialog open is
overwritten at the system.

* Importing object to the second file when Quick Access Bar and
Formatting Bar are open and then closing the file, crashes FM.

* Converting a cross-reference to text crashes FrameMaker when the format of
the cross-reference has been edited.

* Performing a find change using the backwards option leads to a crash.

* Change All operation of a character leads to crash.

* When an equation is applied in conditional text and hidden, it results in
crash.

* The hyphenation of words in old netherland language changes character
case.

* In Netherland language words get corrupted when unhyphenation is done with
the words which have dieresis.

* Garbage characters are shown in Tab stop list box if a legacy file
containing higher ANSI characters in Align field of decimal tab is opened in
FM 8.

* Japanese tab stops do not work in FM 8.

Out of Frame Memory message and crash

2008-05-14 Thread mulholland4
Hi,
I have a problem which started today. When I generate a postscript file
from a frame book file I get an out of framemaker memory message,
Framemaker then proceeds to display a serious error message, after which it
crashes. This happens regardless of the postscript driver I use to print the
file to.
I am using XP with Frame 8 and the new 8.03 (8.0p276) update which I
downloaded today. The book file I am working on has been fine up to today
and I have not had any odd messages or crashes prior to now.

Suggestions Please!

Check to see if you're running low on disk space on the drive/partition
that holds your TEMP (or TMP) directory. On any drive/partition, for
that matter.

How much memory do you have? Have you made any changes to virtual memory
settings? Check your paging file size and if it's custom (not
system-managed), consider increasing it so that it's at least 1.5 times
your physical memory. Or let the system manage it.

Defrag your drive(s). Reboot.

If none of those things help, you may have developed a hardware problem,
such as failing or flaky memory. If you're comfortable mucking about in
the case, try reseating your memory sticks and any cards you have.

BTW, why are you printing to a PostScript file? If it's to create a PDF,
you don't need to do it that way, but if you insist, in Print Setup,

Nope, did same thing to me first couple of times I tried. Finally, the
installer got traction and it updated. I tried updates on the rest of
the suite and same thing happened, so I gave up.

Anyone else having trouble getting this update to install?

I've tried multiple times, including from Acrobat after completely shutting
down my system and every time it says that it detects that FM is open and
cannot install. At least twice, FM was definitely not open.

I tried using the updater from FrameMaker while it was running. No
good. Next time, when the updater started, I killed FM first, then
continued. No good.

Finally I poked around to find where the downloaded files were stored,
hoping that I could just run a setup.exe or similar. Well, on my
machine they are saved to C:\Documents and Settings\userName\Local
Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\Install. In this folder was a
folder named framemaker801-mul (for version 8.0.1, right? Wrong). I
deleted this folder, checked in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) that
there was no headless FrameMaker.exe process running, booted Acrobat,
and ran the updater from that.

Guess what? The framemaker801-mul/ folder was restored but at least the
update ran to completion properly. (Adobe lurkers: should that be
framemaker803-mul and does it matter anyway?)

Quite right. But it's worse than that. A list with reply-to-all
is vulnerable at any time to a mail loop, in which an error by
one member results in an exponentially-increasing avalanche of
copies of every message posted back to the list. Reply-to-sender
prevents that. While there are other ways to detect and prevent
such loops, not every listowner has implemented them, and one such
incident can cause most of the listmembers to depart fast... never
to return.

As a listadmin myself, I consider that a Very Bad Idea.

Re: API documentation with references to Javadocs documentation

2008-05-14 Thread Emily Berk
Hi Ron:

I do sets that include both javadoc and API guides in FM/PDF all the time.

The way I think of it is that the javadoc is a complete reference to
the public API, kind of like a dictionary of all the classes and
methods. The FM documentation is more like an encyclopedia. I
usually call it a Developer's Guide.

The FM documentation highlights the most important classes and
methods, but maybe doesn't mention all the nuances of each (like,
maybe it doesn't go into great detail about every parameter passed to
the method).

On the other hand, the FM documentation includes more general
material not easily incorporated into the javadoc, such as the order
in which methods ought to be called or guidelines about when to use
one technique (set of classes/methods) vs. a different technique to
implement particular use cases.

To x-ref from the FM doc to the javadoc in the context of a section
that discusses a particular class or method, I just say, For more
information, see the javadoc. A developer ought to know how to go
about finding a class or method in the javadoc. (Of course, you also
need to make sure that the class/method is actually documented in the javadoc.)

Hope this helps.

One thing I'm having trouble with is deciding how much JavaDocs

should simply provide links or references to. If anyone has any ideas
on how I can started, I would greatly appreciate it.

FW: API documentation with references to Javadocs documentation

Ron,
No two API docs are exactly the same, but usually they're pretty simple. It
helps if you've done a little programming or scripting. Here are a couple sites

Searching Framers archives (was RE: FrameMaker on Japanese OS)

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the workarounds.

FWIW, I downloaded the archives to my Mac and searched them en masse
using TextWrangler, a text editor.

Crazy really, it was only yesterday, but I cannot for the life of me
remember the term I used to find that info. Tried 8.0.2, update,
downloading, manually, updater...

Still, it would be great to get "proper" searchable archives back
online. Yahoo Groups work well. Incidentally, when I set up my first
list using LISTSERV, I hacked together a Perl script to search the
list archives. I was really pleased with myself when I worked out how
to highlight the search term in red in the results :-)

MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)

I highly recommended using Sequential fields for numbering in Word. Read
the one page in Word's help on Sequential fields. Then use the Tech-Tav

MS Word numbering

2008-05-14 Thread Leah Smaller
Deirdre,

Doens't renaming Word's default Heading# styles just to accomodate hinky
numbering kind of defeat the purpose of using the default headings to easily
generate TOCs and using outline view (well, that is one thing that is missing
in FM!)?

Is your coworker successfully creating PDFs from the books that give you
trouble? Then you need to analyze what the differences are between your
setup and your coworker's.

Are there any errors recorded in the log files?

It could be a font problem. Go to Distiller's Adobe PDF Settings dialog,
Fonts page, and make sure that it's set to embed fonts. And set When
embedding fails to Cancel job. That way, if it's a missing (or
unembeddable) font, at least you'll know. :-)

FrameMaker 8.0.3 Update Now Available via Adobe Updater

2008-05-14 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Anyone else having trouble getting this update to install?

I've tried multiple times, including from Acrobat after completely shutting
down my system and every time it says that it detects that FM is open and
cannot install. At least twice, FM was definitely not open.

Wondering if it's just my system or if others are having the same problem. I
was really hoping to get my dictionary working properly.

The FrameMaker 8.0.3 update is now available via the Adobe Updater.
It will be available via Adobe's website in the very near future.

Per the "readme"...

* Importing object to the second file when "Quick Access Bar" and
"Formatting Bar" are open and then closing the file, crashes FM.

All I had to do was cleanly shut down FM (I do remember the prompt for

Out of Frame Memory message and crash

2008-05-14 Thread mulholland4
Hi,
I have a problem which started today. When I generate a postscript file
from a frame book file I get an "out of framemaker memory message",
Framemaker then proceeds to display a serious error message, after which it

Do you have lots of room on your hard drive for temporary files?

If so, and if nothing else changed

And if you're on a windows platform that supports restore points, I'd
think about rolling back to a point before you applied the patch to
see if that make a difference. And disabling automatic updates, if
they're turned on.

If it's to create a PDF,
you don't need to do it that way, but if you insist, in Print Setup,
select the printer named Adobe PDF. No other PostScript printer is
appropriate for creating PDFs, and if you're using "clonescript"
(non-Adobe copy of PostScript) printers, that might cause who-knows-what
kinds of problems. :-}

Anyone else having trouble getting this update to install?

I've tried multiple times, including from Acrobat after completely
shutting
down my system and every time it says that it detects that FM is open
and
cannot install. At least twice, FM was definitely not open.

Wondering if it's just my system or if others are having the same
problem. I
was really hoping to get my dictionary working properly.

Importance: High

The FrameMaker 8.0.3 update is now available via the Adobe Updater.
It will be available via Adobe's website in the very near future.

Per the "readme"...

List of major issues resolved in this update.

* Extended characters have extra preceding space when using Arial
Unicode MS

* FM catalogs don't sort properly.

* DITA Conref does not get resolved in some cases.

* Some higher code point characters are dropped on MIF open

* In documents with Japanese, Chinese and Korean combination fonts,
quotation marks look different than in FM7.x

* While using Combined Fonts, non-Asian characters present in the Asian
font
are displayed using the Asian font instead of the non-Asian fonts.

* Random letters disappear from textline present in oval within anchored
Frame.

* Use of page range in Index randomly adds a couple of question marks
left
and right in the generated index file.

* Characters become invisible on the screen on the next line while
hyphenating words just before the accented chars.

* The NextPfgTag remains the same when pressing Enter at the beginning
of
the line.

* FM crashes when a document containing hypertext (spread over two
lines) to
marker is saved.

* FM spellchecker does not make use of user.dct entries

* History palette does not record typing command in textline.

* FM crashes on saving a file after deleting split-ed text line.

* For a 3d imported by reference, on moving it from hidden to show all
after
applying conditional text, the referenced path is lost and has facets
which
are for u3d imported as copy

* Pressing space button at the start of line places cursor at the end of
line.

* Drag fails if the target happens to be a locked range.

* FM crashes when a graphic file with object properties dialog open is
overwritten at the system.

* Importing object to the second file when "Quick Access Bar" and
"Formatting Bar" are open and then closing the file, crashes FM.

* Converting a cross-reference to text crashes FrameMaker when the
format of
the cross-reference has been edited.

* Performing a find change using the backwards option leads to a crash.

* Change All operation of a character leads to crash.

* When an equation is applied in conditional text and hidden, it results
in
crash.

* The hyphenation of words in old netherland language changes character
case.

* In Netherland language words get corrupted when unhyphenation is done
with
the words which have dieresis.

* Garbage characters are shown in Tab stop list box if a legacy file
containing higher ANSI characters in Align field of decimal tab is
opened in
FM 8.

* Japanese tab stops do not work in FM 8.

API documentation with references to Javadocs documentation

To x-ref from the FM doc to the javadoc in the context of a section
that discusses a particular class or method, I just say, "For more
information, see the javadoc." A developer ought to know how to go
about finding a class or method in the javadoc. (Of course, you also
need to make sure that the class/method is actually documented in the javadoc.)

Hope this helps.
