Running headers calling on formatted variables

2008-08-14 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'm using FM 7.2 on XP.

In my document, running headers call on Heading1. I sometimes add in 1st-level
titles (Heading1) the name of the product, which is a ProductName variable
formatted in a certain way (half of the name blue, the other purple).

When the product name appears in the header, it is just black.

Any clue?

Thank you all for your help,

Mathieu.

Automatic generation of inner front with chapter tabs

Would you be willing to clarify this for the font novice? From what I read

More details, as requested by Dov, would be extremely helpful. In the
meantime: do all of your installations have the Adobe PDF printer
driver set as default, or do some of them have a physical printer set as
default? Physical printers' drivers often report their resident fonts
to the operating system, which then treats them as though they are
locally installed. That can cause font errors in FM.

RE: why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-14 Thread Dov Isaacs
Nancy,

I absolutely did NOT say than any fonts are being translated either in the
background or otherwise. FrameMaker uses Type 1 fonts (please stop using the
term PostScript fonts - it means nothing since by definition, TrueType fonts
are every bit as much PostScript fonts as are Type 1 fonts) directly mapping
the glyphs in such fonts to Unicode. The same type of mapping occurs with
TrueType fonts and OpenType fonts.

You continue to use FrameMaker with Type 1 fonts the same way you did in the
past.

The only problem that I am aware of is where Type 1 fonts that had strange,
undocumented encodings are mapped into Unicode. This is also a problem with
every
other Adobe application as well. (Example, mapping the Hebrew alphabet into the
Latin A through Z in a font for ease of keying. That is impossible for any
Unicode-
based application to effectively deal with.)

RE: Running headers calling on formatted variables

2008-08-14 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Yves and Mathieu,

Unfortunately you can only apply color to an entire running header-footer. It
is possible though to create the effect you're after, but you have to sacrifice
using a user-defined variable in the heading. Since you only occasionally need
it, it might be feasible.

I'm sending a sample .fm file in a separate mail since what is described below
is a little complex.

1. Create blue and purple character formats.
2. Create four paragraph formats based on Heading1:

ProductNameHeading1 = Heading1 As Is + Runin Head, empty space punct.
ProductName1  = Heading1 AsIs + color Blue + Runin Head
ProductName2  = Heading1 AsIs + color Purple + Runin Head, 1 empyt space punct.
AfterProdName3 = Heading1 AsIs (no runin head)

3. In your header use four variables in your header:
 Running H/F 2 $paratext[Heading1,ProductNameHeading1] + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 5 blue$paratext[ProductName1]
 Running H/F 6 purple$paratext[ProductName2] + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 7 $paratext[AfterProdName3]

This will create a Heading 1 look-a-like that will include a two-color product
name in both the heading and header. One problem remains however, and that is
that you have to dispose of the text in Running H/F 5-7 with the next
appearance of a stand alone Heading 1. To do that:

4. Create an anchored frame in the next Heading 1. Position the frame so
outside the column. Inside the frame draw a textbox with three empty paragraph.
Apply the ProductName1, ProductName2, and AfterProdName3 formats to them. That
will wash out the Running H/F 5-7 in the Header and leave only Heading 1.

You can copy and paste the anchored frame as many times as you need it, or use
AutoText from Silicon Prairie to drop it in whenever needed.

Menu item Fonts lost in Format drop down menu

2008-08-14 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
FM 7.2 no longer shows the Font menu item in Format. I have checked
various files, and, oddly enough I found an almost complete duplicate
of FrameMaker 7.2 in C:\tmp. I don't remember having saved it there
and I don't think anyone would do such a thing in my absence.

I think the correct file for this must be the menus.cfg which holds
these lines about this item:

Add FormatMenu Menu !MakerMainMenu
   Add FontMenu Menu FormatMenu
  Add !ShowFontChoicesMenu FontMenu

and then:
   Add SizeMenu Menu FormatMenu
which is the first menu item showed in the drop-down list.

Can anyone shed a ligh on this? Is there anything missing

OS: XP SP2.

Thanks beforehand,

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-14 Thread acti...@aol.com

Hi,

Would you be willing to clarify this for the font novice? From what I read
into your statement, it appears that Type 1 fonts (the old Adobe PS fonts) are
being translated in the background into Unicode. Is that accurate? Is there
anything special I need to do? Or, can I just go on to use Frame and the fonts
I have (a combination of PS and TrueType fonts) just the way I always have?

Thanks,
Nancy Adams

You don't say what type of "font errors" you are getting (missing fonts?
mismapped characters? What?). If you provide some specific information
including the exact font names, source of such fonts, etc. and perhaps
a sample document, we could perhaps better analyze the problem you are
experiencing and offer some assistance.

That can cause font errors in FM.

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-14 Thread Dov Isaacs
Nancy,

I absolutely did NOT say than any fonts are being "translated" either in the
background or otherwise. FrameMaker uses Type 1 fonts (please stop using the
term "PostScript fonts" - it means nothing since by definition, TrueType fonts
are every bit as much "PostScript fonts" as are Type 1 fonts) directly mapping
the glyphs in such fonts to Unicode. The same type of mapping occurs with
TrueType fonts and OpenType fonts.

You continue to use FrameMaker with Type 1 fonts the same way you did in the
past.

The only problem that I am aware of is where Type 1 fonts that had strange,
undocumented encodings are mapped into Unicode. This is also a problem with
every
other Adobe application as well. (Example, mapping the Hebrew alphabet into the
Latin A through Z in a font for ease of keying. That is impossible for any
Unicode-
based application to effectively deal with.)

Running headers calling on formatted variables

2008-08-14 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Yves and Mathieu,

Unfortunately you can only apply color to an entire running header-footer. It
is possible though to create the effect you're after, but you have to sacrifice
using a user-defined variable in the heading. Since you only occasionally need
it, it might be feasible.

I'm sending a sample .fm file in a separate mail since what is described below
is a little complex.

1. Create and character formats.
2. Create four paragraph formats based on Heading1:

ProductNameHeading1 = Heading1 As Is + Runin Head, empty space punct.
ProductName1  = Heading1 AsIs + color Blue + Runin Head
ProductName2  = Heading1 AsIs + color Purple + Runin Head, 1 empyt space punct.
AfterProdName3 = Heading1 AsIs (no runin head)

3. In your header use four variables in your header:
 Running H/F 2 <$paratext[Heading1,ProductNameHeading1]> + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 5 <$paratext[ProductName1]>
 Running H/F 6 <$paratext[ProductName2]> + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 7 <$paratext[AfterProdName3]>

Hi Mathieu

I guess you are using a character format in the middle of your variable
definition, for example FrameMaker?

I have tested this and, indeed, some properties of the character format (font
family, weight, spread, stretch, superscript) are also displayed in the Running
H/F, others are not (font size, color).

Is this a bug or "by design"?

Hi all,

I'm using FM 7.2 on XP.

In my document, running headers call on Heading1. I sometimes add in 1st-level

formatted in a certain way (half of the name blue, the other purple).

When the product name appears in the header, it is just black.

Any clue?

Thank you all for your help,

Menu item "Fonts" lost in Format drop down menu

2008-08-14 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
FM 7.2 no longer shows the Font menu item in Format. I have checked
various files, and, oddly enough I found an almost complete duplicate
of FrameMaker 7.2 in C:\tmp. I don't remember having saved it there
and I don't think anyone would do such a thing in my absence.

I think the correct file for this must be the "menus.cfg" which holds
these lines about this item:

Can anyone shed a ligh on this? Is there anything missing

Hi Dov,

Thanks for responding. I apologize for my clear ignorance on the topic of
fonts. I feel better now that I can safely use the fonts I have with Frame 8.

Thanks,

You're not the only ignorant one here. It sure would be nice if somebody
knowledgeable were to pen a comprehensive article on the subject of font
types and FM for Intercom. But I am certianly not knowledgeable in the
subject; like many of us, I stick with what I know and hope nothing goes
wrong.
