Multimedia in PDFs with FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers + Multimedia
Assistant Webinar: Tuesday, February 10, 2009 (10am-11am PST)

Learn how you can embed/link to audio or video files (filmed or
software demos) from PDFs created in FM, without the tedious work
of inserting the link/file and defining playback properties every
time the PDF is updated.

With Multimedia Assistant, you use hypertext markers to define
access (embed or link) to local/web-based multimedia files in all
formats supported by Acrobat/Reader, so that the defined features
are automatically present in the PDF file.
[Feature demos: http://www.microtype.com/ShowcaseMultimedia.html ]

Applicable for FrameMaker/Windows (all versions)

2009-01-21 Thread Mike Wickham
Carla,

I was able to download and install the trial of FM9, but haven't played with
it yet. The download should give you two files: a 1.17 MB .exe file, and a
999 MB .7z file. The .exe file extracts the .7z file and then runs an
installation.

FM 9 - Sort Order for Paragraphs, F8/F9 keyboard shortcuts

2009-01-21 Thread Martinek, Carla
One issue that came up during beta testing was the paragraph sort order.
Some of you may have noticed that it changed in one of the FM8 patches.
Many of us created templates that had style names in a particular order
so that we could make easy use of keyboard shortcuts.

Prior to FM8p277, these two styles would sort in this order:

   1_Heading1
   1k_HeadingKit

In FM8p277 and on, they sorted in this order (the underscore came at the
*end* of the sort list, instead of at the beginning):

   1k_HeadingKit
   1_Heading1

In FM9, the catalog sort order can be controlled in two ways through a
flag in maker.ini. The default behavior continues to what was introduced
with 8.0 p277 onwards but the old behavior can be achieved by toggling
this flag.

This can be done by switching the setting using
SymbolSortingBeforeAlphaNumeric=On in the maker.ini file.

===

You will notice that the F8 and F9 shortcuts DO NOT work the same as
previous versions. If you press F8 or F9, and then a letter or number,
you will go to the first style that starts with that character. In the
following example, pressing b would take you to the b1_body style.
However, previously I could press b3 to select the b3_bullet1 style.
Now you either have to press b three times, or press b and then the
down arrow twice to get to the b3 style.

b1_body1
b2_body2
b3_bullet1
b4_bullet2
c1_cellbody1

You may or may not find this inconvenient. In our case, this reduced
functionality has basically rendered the keyboard shortcuts useless for
many styles. To get to the c7 style, I'd have to press c seven times, or
c once and the down arrow six times. I might as well use the mouse at
that point. (If you find this intolerable, please let Adobe know. Now
that the release is out, perhaps they can go back and address this
problem and fix it in a patch release.)

OTHERWISE, I find most of the improvements to be quite nice, and most
Framers will be quite comfortable with the new features in a short time.

Re: New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and new AdobeeLearning Suite

2009-01-21 Thread Rick Quatro
I am happy about the release of FrameMaker 9 and the Tech Comm Suite 2.
However, I am suprised by the lack of visibility on Adobe.com. When I go to
the home page, I see no mention whatsoever of FrameMaker 9. When I click the
See all products link, there are FrameMaker 8, RoboHelp 7, and Captivate 3
icons. I would think that with new releases like these, they would be
featured for a few days on Adobe.com. I understand sales percentages and
market share, etc., but it certainly wouldn't hurt to feature FrameMaker,
etc., on the home page for a few days after its release.

Re: FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

Hi Syed,

2GB of memory is not much for Vista. I would suggest at least 3GB.

Hmmm ... I would suggest doing some testing to see if you see what I
just saw ... I decided to try to duplicate what I was reading here. I
have a fast Windows laptop and tested moving around a document with the
arrow keys with, and without, the designer boxes open.

Running FrameMaker 8, latest patch, on (recently loaded) Vista 32bit on
a Dell Latitude 820 laptop, with a 2.16GHz Core Duo proc, 2GB of memory,
 fast 7200rpm drive.

My results *definitely* confirmed that the cursor movement with the
arrows is MUCH faster with the designer boxes not visible. Since I have
a fast computer, I had only seen a bit of sluggishness in the past (I
keep the Paragraph, Character and Table designer boxes open), but did
not bother to track it down. However, the difference is sufficiently
dramatic that I now plan to work with the designer dialog boxes closed!
Not my preferred mode, fwiw, so I hope Adobe improves this issue.

I attribute this sluggishness to the continuous check and show the
paragraph and character information in the designer dialog boxes while
the cursor is being moved around with the arrow keys - something needs
to be speeded up here for sure!

 Thanks for this thread, folks!

RE: FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

2009-01-21 Thread Syed.Hosain
Hi, Rick.

In the recent past, after I upgraded to Vista, I examined the actual
physical (i.e., not paged to disk) memory being used while I have had
some large FM documents open, and that was not an issue, as far as I
could tell.

However, I was thinking of bumping the memory up anyway, so I will try
that as an option and also see if it has any effect on the issue
described below - the local Fry's Electronics is having a sale on
notebook memory: 4GB for $35 plus tax right now. Not bad at all!

Yup! But you don't have to go all the way to Ultimate 64. Just as an FYI, there
is a Vista Business 64 available as well - a tiny bit cheaper, and still
supports 4GB (and more) memory.

One of the reasons I asked about 64 bit operation a few weeks/months ago on
this list. J Unfortunately, due to some other driver reasons, I could not
install that (I had both 32 and 64 bit Vista Business upgrade disks available).
But I will see if I can do that in the near future since I will be changing my
laptop for a faster version in a few months - it is acting a bit flaky and
locking up on me occasionally.

RE: Adobe announces FM9 and Tech Comm Suite 2

2009-01-21 Thread Owen, Clint
Does anyone know if the PDF review feature will be available in FM 9 by itself,
if you don't buy the whole TC Suite? We use FM, but not the other components of
the suite. This feature alone is probably worth the upgrade from FM 7 to 9, but
I doubt that the company would want to pay for the other applications that we
won't use.

Thanks,

More details, as requested by Dov, would be extremely helpful. In the
meantime: do all of your installations have the Adobe PDF printer
driver set as default, or do some of them have a physical printer set as
default? Physical printers' drivers often report their resident fonts
to the operating system, which then treats them as though they are
locally installed. That can cause font errors in FM.

My understanding of the review feature was that the reviewers only need
the free Acrobat 9 reader. But maybe we would need the pro extended
version of Acrobat along with FM 9 to get the full functionality? That
would be disappointing.

Acrobat 9 Pro Extended is indeed available a separate product.

Note: I don't know whether it has the PDF workflow capability in it or
not, or how well it integrates with FrameMaker 9 - when purchased
without TCS 2.0 that is.

Oran,

I have been using FM8 and Acrobat 8 for some months now without any

external hyperlinks, TOC's, Indexes. I make lists of markers, elements,

paragraphs, etc. all of which are hot All of the links seem to work
as intended in PDF. They work both when I use the Save As PDF abd when
I use the print distill method. Since we are about to upgrade a very
large project involving thousands of unique manuals and hundreds of
thousands of pages monthly, I am curious as to what your workflow/setup

is. If there is a flaw, I have not found it so far. ...

The cross-file linking issue is described at
http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html#FM8UnicodeCrossFileLinks
(together with sample PDFs produced from the same source FM file, using
FM7.2 and FM8.0, and FM8.0+TimeSavers 5.3)

The problem will not be noticed when the PDFs are :
-- accessed locally using Acrobat 8.x, but will be noticed when
cross-file links are activated through a web browser (cross-file links
in a PDF stored in an intranet/internet site) linking
-- viewed in earlier Acrobat versions or some non-Adobe PDFs viewers

Notice that in some cases, internal links are transformed to cross-file
links, which reference the same file as a target. In such a case, links
within the same file won't work when the PDF is viewed through a web
browser.

As to your file lock/unlock issue...

I don't see a problem here, and experience the same behavior in FM7.2
and FM8.0.
In any case, the locking (view only) state has no implications on PDFs
and links.
Links should be tested in PDF, as links that work in FrameMaker may not
work in Acrobat (and sometimes links that don't work in FrameMaker do
work in Acrobat).

The most significant upgrade I've seen in well over 10 years. New

Exactly. If you type t2 and press enter, the first style starting
with a t will highlight, and then it switches to the first heading
style that starts with the number 2, and enter will select the 2
style.

Sorry, but I have never had any faith in Adobe's desire to listen.
In general our requests for changes have gone unheard/ignored.

We tried to tell them this during beta. According to the developers, FM9
is built on a whole new platform, and they were unable to duplicate
exactly some of the features we've used for years. They finally listened
when we told them that the para sort order was a big issue, and they
provided the option to change it in the last beta build. Several of us
said that the default setting for SymbolSortingBeforeAlphaNumeric in the
maker.ini file should be ON, not OFF, but at least we CAN change it.

I think that may well be a deal breaker for me - all the other good
stuff aside.

Please, file your comments with Adobe. Let them know that YOU find this
a deal-breaker, and why.

Now, all that said, a couple of the beta testers who write FrameScripts
said they could probably come up with a script to solve this issue. I'd
certainly pay for the script if they do.

copies of Fireworks and InDesign, if that is possible.

The unique s/w in TC is FM and RoboHelp which I need for clients.

In CS4: InDesign, Illustrator, and Fireworks.

Actually, Photoshop and Presenter are also in TC.

I'm bummed out if it's true that the standalone version of FM9 doesn't share
the integrated PDF review capability of TCS. I would really like that
feature, but FM is the only product I need from that suite, since I have CS4

Yes. Not only that, but you can show original or final (with or without
markup), accept/reject changes individually, accept/reject all, etc. At
least with the TCS2 versions -- I don't know how much of that
functionality is available if you get the standalone versions of FM9 and

Percent symbol in FM equation

2009-01-21 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Framers,

FM 8

I suspect there's a simple answer, but I can't figure out how to insert a
percent symbol % into an equation using the FM equation editor. I use the
editor rarely and usually muddle my through.

I'm re-creating an equation that was originally done in Word (I've already
tried copying that Word equation, saving it as a graphic, and importing it,
but it looks lousy).

Thanks in advance!

FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

2009-01-21 Thread Dave Reynolds
Thanks for the detailed reply, Mike. This thread has confirmed the
behaviour I noticed last year when we upgraded from Frame 6 to Frame 8.
In fact, I posted to the list about it in September, but I think I only
got one reply. This is what I found last year:

**
Hi

I've noticed at times that moving the cursor around in a Frame 8 file
can be rather sluggish. This is when I'm using the arrow key to move
the cursor along a line of text. I've also noticed that using the
shift+arrow keys to select text can be really slow as well. However, at
other times the cursor moves at what I consider to be a normal speed.
The other day I think I found out why. The movement of the cursor slows
right down when I have Paragraph Designer open. I did a timed test on a
random line of text. With PD closed, it took 4 seconds to run the
cursor from one end of the line to the other, but with PD open it took
14 seconds. If I selected the line using Shift+arrow, the times were
about the same. I repeated the test with PD closed and Character
Designer open, but this time it took about 5 seconds.

I've duplicated the test in Frame 6, and both PD and CD have no
noticeable effect on the speed of the cursor movement.

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour? It's not a big problem, just a
nuisance.

I'm on Frame 8.0p277 and Win XP. Pentium 4 dual core 3GHz with 1GB RAM.
***

It's almost as if the Designer is scanning the paragraph for information
each time the cursor is moved. For example, if I open PD and select the
Default Font Tab, put the cursor in a row of body text and press the
right arrow to move the cursor along the line of text, I notice that the
word "Black" in the Color field in PD flashes in time with the movement
of the cursor. Does this mean that PD is checking the font colour and
redisplaying it each time the cursor moves?

Regards

Dave

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and new AdobeeLearning Suite

2009-01-21 Thread Alan Litchfield
Looks good. The demo is well worth the time.

Couple of observations:
1. It seems to be fairly slow in response. Maybe that was just the
computer being used, but one would think that a demo would be created
to minimise those kinds of things. Even Photoshop seemed quite fast by
comparison. Is it sluggish?
2. It seems very clicky, I am hoping the keyboard commands have not
been lost or changed excessively. One of the min reasons I use FM is
through having the ability to virtually leave the mouse alone while
chunking through a 600-odd page book.
3. There was no mention of backwards compatibility. Will it save to
V7.*?
4. Interesting to see the integration with Adobe AIR. Do many people
use it - it is very expensive at some NZD7 per license?
5. The new pdf review workflow looks seriously cool!
6. The TechCom suite looks thoroughly integrated. Will having FM on
its own lose some of those features, like the integration with Acrobat
and Photoshop? Already having both negates the value of buying the
suite you see.

I hope that FM9 will meet your needs. I also fear that it won't.

Several of the alpha- and beta-testers, including me, made the point about how
vital shortcut keys like Ctrl-8/F8 and Ctrl-9/F9 were to the way we work. We
made the point repeatedly, after several builds, and strongly.

Whether or not the developers actually listened to us in the final build, I do
not know. I haven't seen it yet. I am waiting eagerly to find out. Perhaps
someone could test out the free trial download and let us know? (I couldn't get
the download to work for me yesterday.)

FrameMaker 9 Install Trouble

The default behavior continues to what was introduced
with 8.0 p277 onwards but the old behavior can be achieved by toggling
this flag.

This can be done by switching the setting using
"SymbolSortingBeforeAlphaNumeric=On" in the maker.ini file.

===

You will notice that the F8 and F9 shortcuts DO NOT work the same as
previous versions. If you press F8 or F9, and then a letter or number,
you will go to the first style that starts with that character. In the
following example, pressing "b" would take you to the b1_body style.
However, previously I could press "b3" to select the b3_bullet1 style.
Now you either have to press "b" three times, or press "b" and then the
down arrow twice to get to the b3 style.

b1_body1
b2_body2
b3_bullet1
b4_bullet2
c1_cellbody1

You may or may not find this inconvenient. In our case, this reduced
functionality has basically rendered the keyboard shortcuts useless for
many styles. To get to the c7 style, I'd have to press c seven times, or
c once and the down arrow six times. I might as well use the mouse at
that point. (If you find this intolerable, please let Adobe know. Now
that the release is out, perhaps they can go back and address this
problem and fix it in a patch release.)

OTHERWISE, I find most of the improvements to be quite nice, and most
Framers will be quite comfortable with the new features in a short time.

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and new AdobeeLearning Suite

2009-01-21 Thread Rick Quatro
I am happy about the release of FrameMaker 9 and the Tech Comm Suite 2.
However, I am suprised by the lack of visibility on Adobe.com. When I go to
the home page, I see no mention whatsoever of FrameMaker 9. When I click the
"See all products" link, there are FrameMaker 8, RoboHelp 7, and Captivate 3
icons. I would think that with new releases like these, they would be
featured for a few days on Adobe.com. I understand sales percentages and
market share, etc., but it certainly wouldn't hurt to "feature" FrameMaker,
etc., on the home page for a few days after its release.

The 32-bit versions of Vista can only address 3 GB of memory, so more
than that amount doesn't improve performance unless you're running

FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

2009-01-21 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net

Adobe announces FM9 and Tech Comm Suite 2

2009-01-21 Thread Owen, Clint
Does anyone know if the PDF review feature will be available in FM 9 by itself,
if you don't buy the whole TC Suite? We use FM, but not the other components of
the suite. This feature alone is probably worth the upgrade from FM 7 to 9, but
I doubt that the company would want to pay for the other applications that we
won't use.

Thanks,

I was one of the beta-testers and this product is a true "major" release.
The most significant upgrade I've seen in well over 10 years. New product
features will give dramatic ROI and help the product to "pay for itself"

More details, as requested by Dov, would be extremely helpful. In the
meantime: do all of your installations have the Adobe PDF printer
driver set as default, or do some of them have a physical printer set as
default? Physical printers' drivers often report their resident fonts
to the operating system, which then treats them as though they are
locally installed. That can cause font errors in FM.

Adobe announces FrameMaker 9 and Technical Communication

2009-01-21 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I concur with Bernard's analysis. I too have worked with the product for
some time. The pods in the workspaces allow you to see nearly all of your
marker content at one time. You can sort contents of pods in a variety of
ways for pre-flighting or troubleshooting a document. Pods for Cross
References will color code unresolved cross references (avoiding the
"one-at-a-time" search routine.) And, you can finally replace missing fonts
on a per document (or book) basis, without editing maker.ini and restarting
FrameMaker.

In short, after a couple of days working with FM9, I found it irritating to
work with FM8. Yes, there is a learning curve, but it is well worth it.
FrameMaker's previous user interface jelled around 1994, and after 15 years,
it is time for a change.

The new UI will also make the product more accessible to new users and end
the frustration we've all experienced in "getting the people down the hall
to use the product" instead of Word or other inappropriate choices for high
page count projects.

It will be a learning curve for experienced users. I've been working with
this for a while now and I can tell you that it takes a while to get used to
it. However, much like working with other tools, it's now a lot easier to
configure the system for what I'm doing, rather than for what the
application feels like presenting to me. It's been a long time coming, but
it feels more like an Adobe tool. If you use things like Photoshop, or
Acrobat, or any other major Adobe tool, you have a way to configure the
interface to do what you want, rather than what the dev team decided.
[snip]
So, the answer to the question of 'Does anyone know if this is a "good
thing"' is a "yes" but a qualified one. It's a good thing IF you are willing
to take the time to work through the learning curve. Once that's done
though, then it's a much smoother ride and, like the new car, can make the
small bumps seem smoother, the long trips a bit less tiring, and ultimately
make the destination the focus point, not the individual issues that come up
along the way.

I hope that helps out.

I notice that TCS 2.0 includes a version of Acrobat called Acrobat 9.0
Pro Extended, and I suspect that this is the "special sauce" that makes
the new PDF workflow work. So I suspect that the real question is
whether that version of Acrobat will be available as a standalone
product, as well as whether it hooks into the standalone version of
FrameMaker 9.0.

My understanding of the review feature was that the reviewers only need
the free Acrobat 9 reader. But maybe we would need the pro extended
version of Acrobat along with FM 9 to get the full functionality? That
would be disappointing.

It is available standalone:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatproextended/

I didn't want to watch all the flash-y stuff, and text descriptions of
features are somewhat limited, but AcroProE seems to be the source of
the "special sauce."

To address Clint's post that came in as I was writing this: Reviewers
just need Adobe Reader. But you need Acrobat to create PDFs from your FM
docs (I don't think Distiller is bundled with FM anymore, but I could be
wrong about that). It seems reasonable for Adobe to say you need the
full-featured version of Acrobat to add this new and compelling feature
to the PDFs you create.

Adobe announces FM9 and Tech Comm Suite 2

2009-01-21 Thread Kelly McDaniel
That there is so much confusion about a couple of features that
technical writing professionals express an interest in speaks (deeper)
to what RickQ wrote; that these new releases should be featured on the
Adobe web site. Further, that these features should be described in
language that the intended audience finds unambiguous...regards, Kelly.

My understanding of the review feature was that the reviewers only need
the free Acrobat 9 reader. But maybe we would need the pro extended
version of Acrobat along with FM 9 to get the full functionality? That
would be disappointing.

Adobe announces FM9 and Tech Comm Suite 2

2009-01-21 Thread Art Campbell
Clint,

Depending on how you slice and dice it, there are at least several levels of
"review" features.

At the basic level, you can generate a PDF from Acrobat to which reviewers
can add comments, using Reader. That's been in place for several years and
doesn't have anything to do with Frame. It's an Acrobat feature and tool.

New in Tech Comm Suite 2 is FrameMaker 9's ability to read in the comments
from the "reviewed" Acrobat file and to manage them in Frame rather than in
Acrobat.

2009-01-21 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
Acrobat 9 Pro Extended is indeed available a separate product.

Note: I don't know whether it has the PDF workflow capability in it or
not, or how well it integrates with FrameMaker 9 - when purchased
without TCS 2.0 that is.

I don't see a problem here, and experience the same behavior in FM7.2
and FM8.0.
In any case, the "locking" (view only) state has no implications on PDFs
and links.
Links should be tested in PDF, as links that work in FrameMaker may not
work in Acrobat (and sometimes links that don't work in FrameMaker do
work in Acrobat).

Adobe announces FM9 and Tech Comm Suite 2

2009-01-21 Thread Scott White
I have been using the trial version with the sole purpose of seeing
how well the windows cmyk support is.
It is working great so far. I separated my file out and and I got four
"plates" per page, each showing which plate it was. Just what I wanted.
This has always been a big drawback for me; my clients can't do four-
color printing very easily like in InDesign.
Nice job, so far.

Exactly. If you type "t2" and press enter, the first style starting
with a "t" will highlight, and then it switches to the first heading
style that starts with the number 2, and enter will select the "2"
style.

> Sorry, but I have never had any faith in Adobe's desire to listen.

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and new AdobeeLearning Suite

2009-01-21 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I've been an Adobe user for eons, and granted, the suites are wonderful
opportunities to get related software as excellent prices. BUT, now
Adobe is creating crossover amongst the suites, and I'm not so sure
there a pricing opportunity to be had.

I've been looking at upgrading my CS2 to CS4 and FM7 to TC2, and the new
eLearning Suite is ve tempting, but

Acrobat 9 is in all 3.
Captivate is in TC and eLearning.
Flash in eLearning and CS4.
PhotoShop is in eLearning and CS4.
Dreamweaver is in eLearning and CS4.
The unique s/w in TC is FM and RoboHelp which I need for clients.
In eLearning: Presenter and Soundbooth.
In CS4: InDesign, Illustrator, and Fireworks.

Since I rarely use Illustrator, I probably could just purchase a
standalone copies of Fireworks and InDesign, if that is possible.

Actually, Photoshop and Presenter are also in TC.

I'm bummed out if it's true that the standalone version of FM9 doesn't share
the integrated PDF review capability of TCS. I would really like that
feature, but FM is the only product I need from that suite, since I have CS4
Design Premium. There's no way I'm going to pay $1299 to upgrade and then be
forced into the more expensive upgrade path for future versions, too.

Yes. Not only that, but you can show original or final (with or without
markup), accept/reject changes individually, accept/reject all, etc. At
least with the TCS2 versions -- I don't know how much of that
functionality is available if you get the standalone versions of FM9 and
Acro9ProExtended.

The review changes are imported into FrameMaker using the Track Text
Edits feature which already has the preview and accept/jecect features
you mention. If FM9 is able to import eht review edits at all, they should
have all the functionality of the already existing Track Text Edits feature.

Yes. I just went back and looked at the online video. They are calling it
"PDF shared review," but there is not one word of mention of it in the FM9
user guide, nor of the File> Save as PDF (Send For Review) menu item in FM9.
I can see in my existing Acrobat 9 Pro an option to Send for Shared Review,
so it's clear that I can send a PDF for review, and get back the changes,
but not clear if the standalone version of FM9 can import the changes
directly into FM9-- or if that's a feature available only in the TCS version
of FM9.

Extra space after text insets

2009-01-21 Thread Shrobona Choudhuri
Hi!

While I am importing the text insets from a source file, an extra blank
line is automatically added after the content of the text inset. It
seems a minor problem, but I really don't want that extra space! I have
to go to the container document each time to remove this extra space.
How do I get rid of this problem?

Thanks,

Shrobona

Find and Replace Paragraph Format Feature

2009-01-21 Thread Eichelberger, Mark
Folks,

We are one FrameMaker 7 and ePublisher 2008.3

We noticed that when we generated the html output of our FM source files
using ePublisher, the fonts for some of our paragraph formats were
altered. We looked at the Cascading Style Sheet and noticed that
paragraph formats that contained a period in the format name came across
in the css with the value '002e' substituted for the period. When we
looked into ePublisher's help we discovered the warning from ePublisher
that paragraph format names should not contains periods as they cause
issues when the css is created.

So we now realize we have to create new paragraph formats in Frame that
do not have any periods in the names.

Does anyone know if there is a find and replace feature in Frame that
would allow us to replace text tagged with the offending paragraph
format to use another paragraph format that has a supported format name.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

2009-01-21 Thread Alan Barber
Well, it doesn't work that way for me.

Laptop: four year old Sony, optimized for battery life over performance; 1.2
GHz, .5 GB RAM (!!), XP SP3; FM8p273.

Desktop: Dual CPU 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, Vista SP1; FM8p277.

With the desktop it takes six seconds to scroll across two 90character lines
with Paragraph, Character, and Table Designers open. Also six seconds with all
designers closed. Plus or minus a second. Tried it with Photoshop and
Illustrator also open; same result.

With the laptop, ten seconds with 'em open, six with 'em closed. A modest hit,
I say, for a machine that's always sluggish.

Maybe the complexity of the document matters. I used a single, fourteen page
document with only four paragraph tags. No graphics, no tables.

That desktop is by no means high performance. I bought a similar one for my
wife last month for under $500. I've always found Vista to be very snappy, even
as others have complained of sluggish performance.

Alan Barber

Richard Combs wrote:

and if it changes every few characters or lines...

I *think* (not sure though) that FM seems to check *every* time the
arrow key is pressed, regardless of whether there is an actual char tag
that it moves through. So, it slows down even when simply moving along
the same paragraph for example.
