Re: Best graphic format for TCS (FM and RH)

2009-03-18 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Diane

I'm using the following:

   - PNG for line art and screen shots in my HTML-based output (CHM,
webhelp...), because GIF supports only 256 colors
   - EPS or PDF for line art in my PDF output. In FrameMaker, PDF has a
   better preview than EPS

For more information on graphic file formats, see:

 Hi Frameusers,

We're having a bit of a debate at my office regarding the best graphics
format to import to FM, not only for use in FM, but also for RH, because we
use the TCS (FM8/AB8/RH7). We also using Captivate to record some GUI
 walkthroughs.

Our manuals contain a combination of up to 175 color photos, screenshots
and line drawings. They are designed to be used primarily on line. We
print only 3 or 4 small getting started guides. These are short runs on a
Docutech or equivalent, and generally in B/W. No Heidelbergs, no 4-color
 printing.

The rest of the 200 or so docs are delivered in PDF to the customers. Users
can, of course, print them on a local printer.

Our localization vendor recommended GIF because we do not print the
manuals, and this helps keep the file sizes small. However, in addition to
GIF, we found that we need to use at least one other format. The line
drawings from the engineering source docs look great in Paintshop Pro in GIF
format, but the GIF filter in FM displays them badly. When we convert the
GIF files to WMF and import that into FM, the graphics display fine.

Hope to hear back from some of you soon. We've got a meeting tomorrow
 about this.

 Thanks lots everyone,

RE: Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Nancy Allison

Andrew says:

You thought NASA's metric-vs-English mistakes were boneheaded? In
those cases, numbers were off by a factor of 4.45, but when the
mu-to-m error occurs, everything gets multiplied by 1000!
Microseconds become milliseconds, microamps become milliamps,
micrometers become millimeters... And there's NO WAY TO TELL that the
error happened unless there's a LOT of context that happens to look
 self-contradictory.

Yes -- and microliters become milliliters. I was once hired to proofread
product inserts for a major PHARMACEUTICAL company . . . yes, those
densely-folded tinily-printed single pages tucked inside the box
containing your MEDICINE . . . and those inserts were done in Framemaker
and printed God knows where and by whom. I found multiple instances of
mus becoming ms, and plus-or-minuses becoming plain minuses.

These symbols indicated dosages and storage temperatures. The team of
contract proofreaders I was part of was this company's last defense
against errors in these inserts. Since no one knew why the symbols were
getting corrupted, no one had any confidence that our final corrections
would make it past the printing process again. Can you imagine?

I was not comforted by the remark of a friend of mine with long
experience in biotech: Aaah, those inserts are just there to please the
lawyers. Nobody relies on them! I most certainly do rely on them. Don't
you assume that those, at least, are accurate, when you pull them out of
the box for something like, oh, your kid's medicine? Sure, your doctor
has told you what dose to give, but still, don't you think that somebody
has made sure that that little piece of paper is accurate?

And if people take such a cavalier attitude toward these inserts, who's
to say that the PDF is any better?

To be perfectly honest, most of the inserts we reviewed were for
laboratory testing kits, not end-user medicines. Still . . . if you're a
guy nervously awaiting the results of your PSA test, wouldn't you like
to think that the data sheet accompanying the assay materials is
reliable?

Oops -- PDF should be PDR (Physician's Desk Reference).

I should add that all symbols that combined a minus sign with other
signs tended to drop the minus sign, so greater-than-or-equal-to
became greater than, for example.

RE: Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Nancy Allison

I was just thinking, Well, doctors would probably catch a dosage error
that's a thousand times greater than what they expect.

THEN I thought, Yes -- they might, but what about an automated system
that's had the incorrect values ported into it to begin with?

A few years ago, a notorious and tragic medical mistake occurred in
Boston. The health reporter for the Boston Globe, a beautiful young
woman with young children, no less, was treated for breast cancer. She
was erroneously given massive doses of one of her chemotherapy drugs,
and no one caught the error. It killed her.

The Globe pursued the story mercilessly. One of the resulting
improvements to medical practice was a system that would automatically
double-check every dosage prescribed for patients. Oh, yes, I thought
at the time, this will certainly catch situations in which a doctor's
handwriting is illegible and the nurse misreads it, or somebody is
simply asleep at the switch and scribbbles down the wrong thing .. .

Well, yeah, but what if the data ported into the wonderful new automated
system is wrong to being with? Who will guard the guards?

Just don't get sick.

RE: Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Phil Heron
Two things for you to check, Nancy:

1. Make sure you have the Windows Symbol font installed. This is used in some
magic way by Distiller and it's abcense causes the sort of problem you are
seeing.

2. In FrameMaker, check that your Symbol character tag uses the Windows
Symbol font and NOT the Symbol Std font. Symbol Std is a private font
installed by FrameMaker.

My document uses some special symbols, like the Omega.

To create it, I type W and then apply a Symbol character tag, which applies the
Symbol font.

I've created PDFs from this file in two ways:

---Used Framemaker's Save as feature.

---Printed to .ps file and opened it in Acrobat Distiller. In this case, I've
deselected Do not send fonts to printer. I believe this should assure that
the Symbol font is sent to the printer.

Either way, the Omega character is turned back into a W in the final PDF.

This is also happening with the Symbol +/minus sign (the plus is directly over
the minus) -- it is transformed into a plain minus sign.
NOT GOOD.

I'm sure this problem is as old as the hills, but I have Googled lots of
phrases and have not found a good treatment of this subject.

In the short term, I'm creating .gifs of the symbols and importing them into
the text as graphics, but that is time-consuming and clumsy.

All suggestions will be very welcome.

Yes.
Set the Adobe PDF, which is a logical printer (because there isn't a
physical printer), as your system default (or get the plug in that
does that for you).

Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

2009-03-18 Thread Owen, Clint
We use FM 7.0 p578 on Win XP, SP 3.

My coworker recently had Acrobat 9 Standard installed on her computer,
then the hard drive was cloned into a new box and the operating system
was reinstalled. So we don't really know what caused the problem.

For some FM documents, which she has worked on many times before, she
has two different problems, which we don't know to be related, but
started at the same time:

1. When she opens the file FM gives a message that it can't find the
font Arial Black, even though we can see it in the Windows font
directory and it shows up in the FM font list as well. She allows the
substitute and moves on.

2. If she tries to save the file with the same or a different name
she gets this message An internal error occurred while writing imported
graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some
image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical Support. What
gets saved is a file like ***.814.

I can open the same document on my machine, which has the same versions
of FM and Windows, but Acrobat 7 Pro. She has Adobe Type Manager
installed, which I don't.

The IT guy is busy reinstalling FM 7.0, which is all we could think of
to try.

Are there any ideas or suggestions out there?

Thanks,

Clint

Subject: Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

Thanks,

Clint

Repeating Footnotes in FrameMaker

2009-03-18 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I have a table with footnotes that apply to several cells. I use one
real footnote reference and a few more look-a-like references that are

the numbers are automatically updated when I add another footnote?

For example:

Pants 1
Shirts 1
Sweaters 1
Apples 2
Oranges 2

2

RE: Repeating Footnotes in FrameMaker

2009-03-18 Thread Fred Ridder

The way I've always done this is to use cross-references to the footnote item
for the additional reference points. Just create an x-ref format that specifies
the $paranumonly building block with a superscripted character format applied
to it.

RE: Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

2009-03-18 Thread Syed.Hosain
I would start by removing Adobe Type Manager from her system. It is an
old, essentially unsupported Adobe product and was not *really* intended
to be used after Windows NT or Windows 2000 (I forget which). ATM may be
interacting improperly with the built-in font support inside Windows XP.

Frankly, the font control and support inside the newer operating systems
are better than what you can get with ATM, since that has not been
touched in ages by Adobe.

RE: Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

2009-03-18 Thread Owen, Clint
Lea,

Thank you for the clue that solved the problem!

I had started to reply that we never OLE objects or Visio files, and that we
all had SP 3 previously installed, etc. But then I decided to actually check.
The documents in question are not our normal Component Maintenance Manuals or
Service Bulletins. They are quick start guides for a new product, and happen to
be loaded with Visio OLEs! It also turns out that her computer was only up to
SP2 until she was moved to a new box, at which time SP3 was installed. I was
able to open and save the problem files because my machine is also at SP2.

Thanks also to Mike Feimster for pointing out a known problem with the version
of Arial Black that comes with SP3.

This is a great list!

FrameMaker 9 Bug: Find in Book Displays Incorrect Page

2009-03-18 Thread Mike Wickham
Does anyone else see this in FrameMaker 9? If I choose Find in Book,
FrameMaker searches and finds items, but rather than displaying the page
that contains the item, it displays the first page of the chapter that
contains the item. The found item may be many pages away, and is not always
highlighted. I sometimes see the highlighted item flash on screen for a
moment before the page jumps back to the first page of the chapter.

RE: Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Stuti Arora
Which version of Frame are you using? If you are using FM 8 or above, you could
follow Andrew's advice and use Unicode characters with a Unicode Symbol font,
which would be the ideal solution. But if you are on FM7.2 or earlier, you
would need to ensure that Symbol font is available to the distiller (is in its
path/ is embeddable), as others mentioned.

My document uses some special symbols, like the Omega.

To create it, I type W and then apply a Symbol character tag, which

Nancy:

Don't ever do that. If you really need an omega, get it within a non-Symbol
font by following the advice near the end of the following rant, which is a
slightly-edited copy of something I posted a couple years ago to the techwr-l
list...

Using the Symbol font to produce an omega is bad, but not likely to kill anyone.

With omega/W:

If you're viewing the document in a web browser that's been
configured to use your favorite fonts rather than the fonts
specified by the document, the omega symbols become Ws.

Google ignores font information in its text searches, so when
it indexes a page, it sees (and displays in search results) a
  W wherever there's a Symbol-font omega.

If your browser isn't configured to use your own fonts, the
omegas will probably look fine there... But as soon as you
cut-and-paste from the browser window to another application,
like Frame or Word, the omegas become Ws.

If you send the document through an email system that strips
  HTML, the omegas become Ws.

If you send it to a printer that doesn't have the Symbol font,
  the omegas become Ws.

If you view it on a computer that doesn't have the Symbol font,
  the omegas become Ws.

In most of these cases, the font information is permanently lost once the
document's omega symbols become Ws. They never switch back, even if the
document is subsequently viewed in a system which CAN display HTML or the
Symbol font.

The W-instead-of-omega problem isn't limited to web pages; I see it ALL THE
TIME in published datasheets, application notes, user's manuals, trade journal
articles, etc.

Fortunately, the error is easy to spot, since the erroneous W usually makes
no sense, and the intended meaning can generally be deduced from the context.

However...

If you use the Symbol font to make ANOTHER Greek letter, the mu, you really
MIGHT kill someone:

The Greek letter mu is often used in engineering and scientific writing to
represent the prefix micro- (one millionth). In the old days, before we all
had access to fancy computer typefaces, typewritten documents would use the
lowercase u instead of mu, since the two letters look very similar.

Lowercase 'u' means 'mu' means 'micro-' was a universally-understood
convention (among engineers and scientists, anyway): usec = microseconds, uF =
microfarads, uA = microamps... Even uP = microprocessor. No one was ever
confused by this, and all was well until some pedantic dumbass noticed that he
could make the unit names in his documents correct by using the Symbol-font
mu instead of the lowercase u that we'd all been happy with for decades.

The result, of course, is the same as for omega, with one small but fatal
difference:

Omega maps to the W character, which almost always looks like an error
(e.g., 4.7kW, 1/8-watt resistor) but mu maps to the m character, which is
the symbol for the prefix milli- (one thousandth).

Since m-for-milli can be reasonably used almost anywhere that mu-for-micro
can, it NEVER looks like an error!

You thought NASA's metric-vs-English mistakes were boneheaded? In those cases,
numbers were off by a factor of 4.45, but when the mu-to-m error occurs,
everything gets multiplied by 1000! Microseconds become milliseconds,
microamps become milliamps, micrometers become millimeters... And there's NO
WAY TO TELL that the error happened unless there's a LOT of context that
happens to look self-contradictory.

Since it's so hard to identify the mu-to-m error, it's difficult to know how
prevalent it is, but I'd guess that it happens at least as frequently as the
omega-to-W error that I see everywhere.

There are actually a few places where a mu-to-m error would be obvious, and I
often see it there... Like, for instance, in the US Navy's NRaD Writing and
Editorial Guidelines:

http://www.spawar.navy.mil/sti/publications/pubs/td/1064/td1064appb.html

It contains a list of abbreviations that includes both micro- and milli- units.
It's obvious that a mu-to-m error has occurred, since the list shows m for
both sets of units.

I no longer approve documents that use the Symbol font for

Ted, Art is right in saying that converting to html with mif2go is an option
but I guess it depends on how much formatting has been done in Frame and how
much of that formatting you want to keep. I think you'll also need to switch
off the default html editor in the TyePad dashboard (or the admin area where
you write posts - sorry, it's been a long while since I've used TypePad!)

I'm not clear from your question whether you want to convert the whole book
and output it to a multitude of posts or whether you want to cherry pick
isolated paragraphs as posts. If it's the latter, it could be simpler to
copy chunks of text as you need them into a text editor (e.g. Notepad on
Windows or one of the many excellent free editors out there) and format the
html as you go.

More information please!

RE: [TCS Users] FM9: empty list of building blocks in Para Designer

2009-03-18 Thread Mahesh Kumar Gupta
* I work with Adobe Systems *

Hello All

I know that 9.0.1 has brought many fixes but unfortunately, a couple of issues
have crept in. However, there is a workaround which is:

a)Make sure Hide Panels on Close if OFF in
File-Preferences-Interface dialog (once we do this, this setting persists for
all subsequent FM session)
b)Close Para/Character/Table Designer once and reopen. This will
fix the issue. (need to be done once for FM session)

Ref: FM 9 bugs - I have noticed.

2009-03-18 Thread Karen Mann
1. FrameMaker searches and finds items, but rather than displaying the
page that contains the item, it displays the first page of the chapter
that contains the item. The found item may be many pages away, and is
not always highlighted. I sometimes see the highlighted item flash on
screen for a moment before the page jumps back to the first page of the
chapter.

2. Building blocks now missing after 9.0.1 update.

3. Have had bullets change size and all conform to one size instead of
the 2 different assigned tags. Have to save Book after making changes to
part of the book.

4. Crash on printing from other print driver than the PDF.

5. Now cannot undo if graphic inserted and I don't want it, I have to
close without saving and then reopen to start all over.

To have the entire TOC paragraph active (including its page number), avoid
character formatting in TOC items on the Reference page TOC specification
(eg, H1TOC should be blue and/or the same font/size throughout.)

However, the problem may still be encountered when source TOC items
retrieved have character properties such as subscript, superscript or font
changes -- some examples can be found at
http://www.microtype.com/Hmmms.html#0305

If character formats in the TOC cannot be avoided (either retrieved from
source paragraphs or required by design), I recommend using FrameScript to
duplicate the hypertext marker present at the beginning of each TOC entry
for each distinct character format area within that entry (independently of
whether this property change comes from the TOC specification on the
Reference page or from the source TOC item).
Such a script can also be extended to deal with other TOC problems.

Best graphic format for TCS (FM and RH)

Hi Diane

I'm using the following:

   - PNG for line art and screen shots in my HTML-based output (CHM,

   - EPS or PDF for line art in my PDF output. In FrameMaker, PDF has a
   better preview than EPS

Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

I was not comforted by the remark of a friend of mine with long
experience in biotech: "Aaah, those inserts are just there to please the
lawyers. Nobody relies on them!" I most certainly do rely on them. Don't
you assume that those, at least, are accurate, when you pull them out of
the box for something like, oh, your kid's medicine? Sure, your doctor
has told you what dose to give, but still, don't you think that somebody
has made sure that that little piece of paper is accurate?

And if people take such a cavalier attitude toward these inserts, who's
to say that the PDF is any better?

To be perfectly honest, most of the inserts we reviewed were for
laboratory testing kits, not end-user medicines. Still . . . if you're a
guy nervously awaiting the results of your PSA test, wouldn't you like
to think that the data sheet accompanying the assay materials is
reliable?

Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Nancy Allison

Oops -- PDF should be PDR (Physician's Desk Reference).

I should add that all symbols that combined a minus sign with other
signs tended to drop the minus sign, so "greater-than-or-equal-to"
became "greater than," for example.

Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Nancy Allison

I was just thinking, "Well, doctors would probably catch a dosage error
that's a thousand times greater than what they expect."

THEN I thought, "Yes -- they might, but what about an automated system
that's had the incorrect values ported into it to begin with?"

"improvements" to medical practice was a system that would automatically
double-check every dosage prescribed for patients. "Oh, yes," I thought
at the time, "this will certainly catch situations in which a doctor's
handwriting is illegible and the nurse misreads it, or somebody is
simply asleep at the switch and scribbbles down the wrong thing .. . "

Well, yeah, but what if the data ported into the wonderful new automated
system is wrong to being with? Who will guard the guards?

Just don't get sick.

"Symbol" font and NOT the "Symbol Std" font. Symbol Std is a private font
installed by FrameMaker.

My document uses some special symbols, like the Omega.

To create it, I type W and then apply a Symbol character tag, which applies the
Symbol font.

I've created PDFs from this file in two ways:

---Used Framemaker's "Save as" feature.

---Printed to .ps file and opened it in Acrobat Distiller. In this case, I've
deselected "Do not send fonts to printer." I believe this should assure that
the Symbol font is sent to the printer.

Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Nancy Allison

OK, I set Adobe PDF as my default. Same results.

However, someone pointed me to a document that worked correctly. The
ONLY difference I can see between that doc and mine is that the writer
did NOT create a Frame character tag called Symbol that applied the
Symbol font (Symbol, not Symbol Std).

Instead, he evidently went to the Format/Fonts menu and applied Symbol
(not Symbol Std) directly from there.

The characters I created that way survived the translation to PDF. (So
did the characters I cut and pasted from the correct doc into mine. So
evidently the Distiller font settings are not the issue.)

Any thoughts as to why this made a difference?

Thanks one and all -- what a nasty problem.

FrameMaker 9.0.1 Update Now Available ... Come and Get It!

2009-03-18 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
First observations:

Good news:

F8 and F9 support for type-ahead selection of character and pgf
formats does work (again). Also, of course, Ctrl+0 for variable
insertion, Ctrl+1/2/3 for element actions, Ctrl+4/5 for text condition
actions.

PDF graphics are no longer RGB-rasterized when creating PDFs (RGB or
CMYK).

Bad news:

At least in the German locale the commands popup in the Paragraph /
Character / Table Designer does not open on mouse click. In the
Paragraph / Table Designer it works after switching once between the
visible tabs, but for the Character Designer this does not help. Could
someone check this with other language versions, please?

EMF graphics turn into ugly black stripes when creating a CMYK PDF. I
know, EMF does not know anything about CMYK, but must the result be so
ugly...

Hi Michael

See my comments below (>).

Sigh! I had hoped that "never change a working feature" had been the motto,
but apparently, it wasn't. I miss the good old FM 7 UI already. Some people

worked.

Looking forward to 9.0.2 soon. ;-)

2. If she tries to save the file with the same or a different name
she gets this message "An internal error occurred while writing imported
graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some
image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical Support." What
gets saved is a file like "***.814".

Thanks,

Clint

Repeating Footnotes in FrameMaker

2009-03-18 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I have a table with footnotes that apply to several cells. I use one
real footnote reference and a few more look-a-like references that are
just subscript numbers. Is there any "right" way to do this so that all
the numbers are automatically updated when I add another footnote?

For example:
(Pretend the numbers are superscript.)

Pants 1
Shirts 1
Sweaters 1
Apples 2
Oranges 2

1
You can find these in the clothing section.

2
You can find these in the fruit section.

The way I've always done this is to use cross-references to the footnote item

You might need to actually uninstall the new version and install the new

Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

2009-03-18 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
I would start by removing Adobe Type Manager from her system. It is an
old, essentially unsupported Adobe product and was not *really* intended
to be used after Windows NT or Windows 2000 (I forget which). ATM may be
interacting improperly with the built-in font support inside Windows XP.

Frankly, the font control and support inside the newer operating systems
are better than what you can get with ATM, since that has not been
touched in ages by Adobe.

Font and Graphic problems after installing Acrobat 9.0

2009-03-18 Thread Owen, Clint

Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Stuti Arora
Which version of Frame are you using? If you are using FM 8 or above, you could
follow Andrew's advice and use Unicode characters with a Unicode Symbol font,
which would be the ideal solution. But if you are on FM7.2 or earlier, you
would need to ensure that Symbol font is available to the distiller (is in its
path/ is embeddable), as others mentioned.

Thanks,

Google ignores font information in its text searches, so when
it indexes a page, it sees (and displays in search results) a
  "W" wherever there's a Symbol-font "omega".

Fortunately, the error is easy to spot, since the erroneous "W" usually makes
no sense, and the intended meaning can generally be deduced from the context.

However...

If you use the Symbol font to make ANOTHER Greek letter, the "mu", you really
MIGHT kill someone:

The Greek letter "mu" is often used in engineering and scientific writing to
represent the prefix "micro-" (one millionth). In the old days, before we all
had access to fancy computer typefaces, typewritten documents would use the
lowercase "u" instead of "mu", since the two letters look very similar.

"Lowercase 'u' means 'mu' means 'micro-'" was a universally-understood
convention (among engineers and scientists, anyway): usec = microseconds, uF =
microfarads, uA = microamps... Even uP = microprocessor. No one was ever
confused by this, and all was well until some pedantic dumbass noticed that he
could make the unit names in his documents "correct" by using the Symbol-font
"mu" instead of the lowercase "u" that we'd all been happy with for decades.

The result, of course, is the same as for "omega", with one small but fatal
difference:

"Omega" maps to the "W" character, which almost always looks like an error
(e.g., "4.7kW, 1/8-watt resistor") but "mu" maps to the "m" character, which is
the symbol for the prefix "milli-" (one thousandth).

Since "m-for-milli" can be reasonably used almost anywhere that "mu-for-micro"
can, it NEVER looks like an error!

It's obvious that a mu-to-m error has occurred, since the list shows "m" for
both sets of units.

Exporting to TypePad

2009-03-18 Thread Ceri Richard
TypePad (http://www.typepad.com/) is the hosted version of the Moveable Type
(http://www.movabletype.org/) CMS.

I'm not clear from your question whether you want to convert the whole book
and output it to a multitude of posts or whether you want to "cherry pick"
isolated paragraphs as posts. If it's the latter, it could be simpler to
copy chunks of text as you need them into a text editor (e.g. Notepad on
Windows or one of the many excellent free editors out there) and format the
html as you go.

More information please!

Table Format

2009-03-18 Thread luca finocchiaro
A simple question, I put a Format A table in my document, I change the
column width and save as xml, but when I reopen the document the width not
change, can I drop the table width attribute in r/w rules to customize my
tables? Or how can I fix this problem?thank you.
