Re: FM9 Buggy UI Behavior (Joseph)

2009-04-14 Thread John Hedtke
Dear Joseph, et al:

Yes, I have been observing the dancing menus problem for a month or
two. I hadn't noticed the other problems, but they could well
be. I've got ATCS 2.0 loaded (and am writing a review of it). I'd
tried to describe this problem to RJ Jacques, but he said he hadn't
run into this before and didn't know what it was just from the
description, so I was unable to get additional information (as of
around the beginning of March). I was trying to shoot a Captivate
movie to show this, but got sidetracked by work. Sounds like I'm not
the only one, though. whew! My system is a pretty vanilla box:
ASUS motherboard with an onboard Nvidia GeForce FX 5200, with a
ViewSonic 21 LCD monitor. I'm running at 1400 x 1050 x 32-bit
color. The dancing menus are easy to see and trigger: loading a new
FM file does it for me.

Don't know if it's something other people have shown the folks at
Adobe yet, but at least there's more than one of us.

Yes. Whenever I switch between workspaces, toolbars flicker for 2-3 seconds
(less noticeable flickering occurs in other cases).

I see this in both standalone FM9 and FM9-TCS2, on two different computers.

RE: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker

2009-04-14 Thread Combs, Richard
qui...@airmail.net wrote:

I would note, that while the series letter is very important, and will
regularize the numbering stream, it seems likely that Eva is using a
single stream in order to restart the numbering sequence at the start
of
each section/chapter without using a separate start style. If that is
indeed the case, she should still use a single series identifier, but
use it in all instances of numbering. snip

Sorry, but that's just not true. From FM6 onward, you can restart pgf
numbering by selecting Restart Paragraph Numbering in Numbering
Properties. There's no reason to put all your number sequences into a
single, complex stream, where you have to keep straight which pgf
formats restart which counters.

Eva mentioned only table and figure numbering, yet her table autonumber
format has 7 or 8 placeholders (the examples given aren't consistent).
That's rather complex. And her table numbering is starting over here and
there within the chapter, so as you pointed out earlier, one of the
other pgf formats in that autonumber stream is resetting numbering (Eva,
look for pgfs in which the last counter of the autonumber format is
=0).

In fact, that table autonumber format (Table $chapnum.$volnum-n
-n+) is an odd combination of the old (pre-FM6)
and new way of doing numbering, and I suspect that at some point someone
tried to graft the new building blocks into the old scheme instead of
rethinking the whole thing.

Eva seems to think that Table 5.1-5-1 is what the first table should be.
I think it's a bit odd to use the $chapnum building block for sections
and $volnum for their subsections, and it would never enter my mind to
include the subsection number in table or figure numbering, but maybe
that's just me.

But what is the third digit (produced by the n counter in the above
autonumber format) identifying? And what pgf tag increments it? In all
the examples Eva provided, it has the same value as $chapnum -- is it
incremented by the chapter/section title, and could it be just a remnant
of the scheme before $chapnum was available?

And what about all those placeholders -- surely, there aren't 7 levels
of numbered lists! What else is in this numbering stream?

Personally, I think a two-part table/figure number is sufficient. My
autonumber formats for table and figure captions are in separate series
(T and F) and look like this:

T:Table\ $chapnum\+n+\t
F:Figure\ $chapnum\+n+\t

The \ is a non-breaking space, \+ is a non-breaking hyphen, and
\t is a tab. Nothing resets the counters (pgf numbering is set to
restart for each chapter, chapter numbering increments).

I only use two levels of numbered lists. My autonumber formats for
ListNum and ListAlpha pgfs use the N numbering series and look like
this:

N:n+ =0\t
N: a+\t

My heading and body pgf formats have the following autonumber format so
that they restart the list numbering:

N: =0 =0

Indented body pgfs and anything else that I want to permit within a
numbererd list don't have an autonumber.

There are a few other autonumbers (e.g., numbered lists in table text),
but they're similarly simple -- no more than two counters.

Simplify, simplify! (IMHO, YMMV, etc.)

I need some really quick help with how to best use the DPI settings to
 import screen captures by reference.

I have some wide screen captures that will not fit into the anchored
 frame and retain clarity.

If I use the 96 DPI, I can get the area being emphasized, but not
enough surrounding area to have landmarks for the user.

The larger screen captures, about 4x6, are even more difficult. If I
use the 150 DPI, it goes in the anchored frame, but again the text
 quality is not very good.

What format are they saved in? If it's JPEG, that's part of your
problem. JPEG is optimal for photos, but a poor choice for screen shots,
and often results in blurry text. Switch to PNG.

If these screen captures are from a Windows machine, 96 dpi should be
approximately life-size and 150 dpi should be easily readable. I
routinely used 180 dpi for screen shots of an application window about
900 x 500 pixels, making them about 5 wide in the doc. When you say
4x6, are you talking inches? You should be able to insert those into an
8.5 x 11 page life-size or nearly so, and if they're decent quality,
they should be as sharp and clear as the original window from which
they're captured.

You refer to _the_ anchored frame as if it was a given. Can't you use a
larger frame? If necessary, you can rotate the screen shot so its width
can be nearly the height of your text frame (although you shouldn't need
to unless I'm misunderstanding the sizes you're working with or these
screens use really tiny type).

BTW, to maintain the quality of a bitmap graphic, resist the urge to
make it larger or smaller with the mouse. Resize it only by changing the
dpi (best) or setting a round-number scaling percentage (both in the
Object Properties dialog).

HTH!

Re: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker

2009-04-14 Thread quills
Richard,

I agree with simplifying, however, that may not be possible in a
corporate environement with numerous documents that use the same
template. Without a lot of effort.

The reasoning behind using a reset of the stream by a previous paragraph
number is to automate the numbering without human intervention, which
clicking on the reset pgf numbering button requires. It is older
technology, however, it works and ensures that the renumbering occurs
even if you use the content in a different context.

But all of this is conjecture when looking at the problem at hand. Your
suggestion is right on the money on looking for a numbering sequence
that might be resetting the series.

FM9 Buggy UI Behavior (Joseph)

My system is a pretty vanilla box:
ASUS motherboard with an onboard Nvidia GeForce FX 5200, with a
ViewSonic 21" LCD monitor. I'm running at 1400 x 1050 x 32-bit
color. The dancing menus are easy to see and trigger: loading a new
FM file does it for me.

Don't know if it's something other people have shown the folks at
Adobe yet, but at least there's more than one of us.

Yours truly,

Yes. Whenever I switch between workspaces, toolbars flicker for 2-3 seconds
(less noticeable flickering occurs in other cases).

I see this in both standalone FM9 and FM9-TCS2, on two different computers.

Conditional table rows

2009-04-14 Thread Lynn Durell

this doesn't find table rows that are marked with that condition. Can

FM9 Buggy UI Behavior (Joseph)

2009-04-14 Thread Joseph
Hi John and Shlomo,

Its good to know its not all in my head! :) Unfortunately, I am bummed out
because this probably means its a bug with FrameMaker 9. This GUI issue is
NOT intermittent for me. It happens every single time I maximize a window,
change a workspace, or hover over buttons. I can easily replicate it or
record it with a captivate video.

However, I was told by adobe technical support that their policy is that
they do NOT assist someone with a trial version of TCS 2.0, only someone
with a purchased copy. I understand the need for such a policy but it seems
self-defeating since I would probably purchase the software if I knew this
issue is fixable or would be addressed in the future.

Right now it seems like Adobe is completely oblivious to it.

Sincerely,
Joe

Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker

Sorry, but that's just not true. From FM6 onward, you can restart pgf
numbering by selecting Restart Paragraph Numbering in Numbering
Properties. There's no reason to put all your number sequences into a
single, complex stream, where you have to keep straight which pgf
formats restart which counters.

Eva mentioned only table and figure numbering, yet her table autonumber
format has 7 or 8 placeholders (the examples given aren't consistent).
That's rather complex. And her table numbering is starting over here and
there within the chapter, so as you pointed out earlier, one of the
other pgf formats in that autonumber stream is resetting numbering (Eva,
look for pgfs in which the last counter of the autonumber format is "<
=0>").

In fact, that table autonumber format (Table <$chapnum>.<$volnum>-<
>< >< >< >< >< >< >-) is an odd combination of the old (pre-FM6)
and new way of doing numbering, and I suspect that at some point someone
tried to graft the new building blocks into the old scheme instead of
rethinking the whole thing.

Eva seems to think that Table 5.1-5-1 is what the first table should be.
I think it's a bit odd to use the <$chapnum> building block for sections
and <$volnum> for their subsections, and it would never enter my mind to
include the subsection number in table or figure numbering, but maybe
that's just me.

But what is the third digit (produced by the "" counter in the above
autonumber format) identifying? And what pgf tag increments it? In all
the examples Eva provided, it has the same value as <$chapnum> -- is it
incremented by the chapter/section title, and could it be just a remnant
of the scheme before <$chapnum> was available?

And what about all those placeholders -- surely, there aren't 7 levels
of numbered lists! What else is in this numbering stream?

Personally, I think a two-part table/figure number is sufficient. My
autonumber formats for table and figure captions are in separate series
(T and F) and look like this:

T:Table\ <$chapnum>\+\t
F:Figure\ <$chapnum>\+\t

The "\ " is a non-breaking space, "\+" is a non-breaking hyphen, and
"\t" is a tab. Nothing resets the counters (pgf numbering is set to
restart for each chapter, chapter numbering increments).

I only use two levels of numbered lists. My autonumber formats for
ListNum and ListAlpha pgfs use the N numbering series and look like
this:

N:< =0>\t
N:< >\t

My heading and body pgf formats have the following autonumber format so
that they restart the list numbering:

N:< =0>< =0>

Indented body pgfs and anything else that I want to permit within a
numbererd list don't have an autonumber.

There are a few other autonumbers (e.g., numbered lists in table text),
but they're similarly simple -- no more than two counters.

Simplify, simplify! (IMHO, YMMV, etc.)

Richard

Thank You _RE: URGENT_Images and DPI

2009-04-14 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all,
I followed the advice to turn off down sampling and compression. I also ran
some test samples of DPIs for the different sizes of the screen captures (based
on inches) and now have better images.

Thanks again for all your help !

What format are they saved in? If it's JPEG, that's part of your
problem. JPEG is optimal for photos, but a poor choice for screen shots,
and often results in blurry text. Switch to PNG.

If these screen captures are from a Windows machine, 96 dpi should be
approximately "life-size" and 150 dpi should be easily readable. I
routinely used 180 dpi for screen shots of an application window about
900 x 500 pixels, making them about 5" wide in the doc.

HTH!

Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker

2009-04-14 Thread qui...@airmail.net
