You want to get Bruce Foster's ImpGraph plug-in, which (from the ReadMe): lets you specify the default settings for the anchored frame created when you import a graphic and for the scale and runaround settings for an imported graphic. http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/ImpGraph.htm Cheers, Art Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... RE: Default Anchored frame positioning
The easiest way to accomplish the is to use the standard shrinkwrap command, invoked by pressing the three keys Esc, m, p in sequence (not simultaneously), after you've inserted the graphic. (I've been using this command for so long that those three keystrokes are completely automatic for me whenever I insert a graphic.) This command, which was originally designed for inline mathematical equations (the mp mnemonic stands for math, package), does exactly what you seek, plus it reduces the padding between the graphic and the graphic from 6 pts on all sides to 1 pt on all sides. Note that what I describe is the *standard* shrinkwrap command. Many Frame users have installed a free 3rd party plugin called ShrinkWrapAsIs.dll, which changes the padding *without* changing the position property. If you have that DLL in the fminit\Plugins folder of your FrameMaker installation, simply move it to another file to restore the standard shrinkwrap command. Of course, it's also possible that you actually *want* the 6 pt padding around each graphic, and in that case Art Campbell's suggestion to buy Bruce Foster's ImpGraph plugin is probably the best solution. -Fred Ridder Subject: Default Anchored frame positioning Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 09:24:11 +0200 From: verner.ander...@radiometer.dk To: fram...@omsys.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Hi I have unstructured FM8. Fred, I'm not sure which version of ImpGraph you're running, the padding or margin is one of the property settings that you specify. It's not locked at 6 pt as you imply in your message. RE: Default Anchored frame positioning
Art, First, I don't use ImpGraph at my current job because shrinkwrap works fine for our template design. Second, I never said (nor implied, as far as I can see) that ImpGraph locks the padding around graphics at *any* value. The point I was making was that both the standard and AsIs versions of the FrameMaker shrinkwrap command *always* change the graphics padding from 6 pt to 1 pt, and that if Verner needs/wants the original padding (or anything greater than that 1 pt padding produced by shrinkwrap) he needs to use something other than shrinkwrap. I mentioned ImpGraph by name only because you had already suggested that tool. I was simply trying to provide context for my suggestion as well as acknowledging your valid suggestion. -FR From: art.campb...@gmail.com Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 09:06:24 -0400 Subject: Re: Default Anchored frame positioning To: docu...@hotmail.com CC: verner.ander...@radiometer.dk; fram...@omsys.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Fred, I'm not sure which version of ImpGraph you're running, the padding or margin is one of the property settings that you specify. Preserving HTML hyperlinks in a FrameMaker Document

Re: Preserving HTML hyperlinks in a FrameMaker Document
I don't think there's an easy way to do it, mostly because there isn't a filter to turn the HTML anchors and hrefs into FM markers. If you have to do it manually, I'd copy the entire HTML page as text and paste that into FM. Then you can cut and paste the links into FM Hypertext markers. An option would be to see if you can use FrameScript to do the transformation. If it's something you have to do on a regular basis, it'd be worth paying one of the FrameScript gurus to craft a custom script for you. However... if your developer is really good, he/she can probably transform the script output into a MIF file which you could then open and edit directly in Frame. Hi Joseph, FrameScript and MSXML (Microsoft's free XML parser) can be used to import HTML into FrameMaker. The feasibility of this depends on the complexity and validity of the source HTML. If you can send me some samples of HTML documents as well as the desired result in FrameMaker, I can tell you what is possible. Thank you very much. Table sorting has accuracy issues
Hi Listers, I've been experiencing problems in sorting a table alphabetically, with a strong desire to have the sort ignore spaces. FM 8.0 Windows XP with SP 2 I have a long 1-column table. RE: Table sorting has accuracy issues
Hi Tom, The index references pages won't have any effect on table sorting. Table sorting is done with a .dll and can't be controlled anywhere like a reference page. Here is one workaround that I have done with a FrameScript script: 1) Add a temporary column to the table. 2) Take the sort data and copy it to the temporary column. 3) Massage the sort data in the temporary column so that it will sort correctly. 4) Sort the table based on the temporary column. For example, this may mean replacing dashes with spaces. 5) Delete the temporary column from the table. Of course FrameScript handles all 5 steps and it happens in the blink of an eye. We have to figure out the correct sort logic for the script, but once that is done, FrameScript makes it painless to sort tables according to your specs. If you are interested in a FrameScript solution like this, please send me a sample document offlist and I will give you a quote. Thank you very much. Push or Click
Hello, Thanks to all who responded to my query. It definitely helped me forward the responses to the person who created the inhouse style guide which included terms rarely found in any of the style guides. Inhouse style guides are fine when all follow the rules. In this case each writer followed their own rules without bothering about any style guidelines- inhouse or otherwise. This chain of mails was very very helpful and informative. Thanks again to each of you who responded. Push is what you do to elevator buttons, doorbells, doors, and cars with dead batteries. But other issues are at least as important as which word is technically correct. Who is your audience? Are they complete computer novices? Is there really a Browse button? (That's not a UI element I'm familiar with -- I start browsers using shortcuts, the taskbar, or the Start menu.) Don't get distracted by the references to keyboard shortcuts, different mouse buttons, etc. Mention the latter only if this is for absolute beginners, who have to be told how to work a mouse. Don't mention the former (or any other alternate ways to accomplish the task) at all. If the audience needs to be told _how_ to start the browser, tell them only the one simplest, most direct way -- click Browse. For anyone other than computer novices, I'd use a variant of Art's suggestion: Start (not activate) your browser. Or better yet: Point your browser to... Don't insult their intelligence -- just tell them what to do and assume they know how (they prefer) to do it. Richard Richard G. You want to get Bruce Foster's ImpGraph plug-in, which (from the ReadMe): "lets you specify the default settings for the anchored frame created when you import a graphic and for the scale and runaround settings for an imported graphic." http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/ImpGraph.htm Cheers, Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... The easiest way to accomplish the is to use the standard "shrinkwrap" command, invoked by pressing the three keys Esc, m, p in sequence (not simultaneously), after you've inserted the graphic. (I've been using this command for so long that those three keystrokes are completely automatic for me whenever I insert a graphic.) This command, which was originally designed for inline mathematical equations (the "mp" mnemonic stands for "math, package"), does exactly what you seek, plus it reduces the padding between the graphic and the graphic from 6 pts on all sides to 1 pt on all sides. -Fred Ridder > Subject: Default Anchored frame positioning > Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 09:24:11 +0200 > From: verner.andersen at radiometer.dk > To: framers at omsys.com; framers at lists.frameusers.com > > Hi > I have unstructured FM8. Fred, I'm not sure which version of ImpGraph you're running, the padding or margin is one of the property settings that you specify. It's not locked at 6 pt as you imply in your message. Or you can specify the dimensions for the frame and size the graphic to fit. Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Art, First, I don't use ImpGraph at my current job because shrinkwrap works fine for our template design. Second, I never said (nor implied, as far as I can see) that ImpGraph locks the padding around graphics at *any* value. The point I was making was that both the standard and "AsIs" versions of the FrameMaker shrinkwrap command *always* change the graphics padding from 6 pt to 1 pt, and that if Verner needs/wants the original padding (or anything greater than that 1 pt padding produced by shrinkwrap) he needs to use something other than shrinkwrap. I mentioned ImpGraph by name only because you had already suggested that tool. I was simply trying to provide context for my suggestion as well as acknowledging your valid suggestion. -FR > From: art.campbell at gmail.com > Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 09:06:24 -0400 > Subject: Re: Default Anchored frame positioning > To: docudoc at hotmail.com > CC: verner.andersen at radiometer.dk; framers at omsys.com; framers at > lists.frameusers.com > > Fred, > > I'm not sure which version of ImpGraph you're running, the padding or > margin is one of the property settings that you specify. The first such insertion in a FM session requires that I choose At Insertion Point in the anchored frame dialog box, but FM keeps that choice as the default in a session until it is changed. I have the ShrinkWrapAsIs.dll installed and use the Esc m p sequence after importing a graphic. Preserving HTML hyperlinks in a FrameMaker Document
Hi all, One of the documents I create is an programmer's reference guide. This guide consists of a list of extension functions that are hyperlinks to corresponding descriptions. This content is embedded within the code. One of the developers I work with created a script that extracts out this information and transforms it into an HTML page. I need to convert this HTML page into a FrameMaker document. Is there a way to import this HTML document into FrameMaker and preserve the hyperlinks? -- Sincerely, Joseph Lorenzini
Preserving HTML hyperlinks in a FrameMaker Document
Preserving HTML hyperlinks in a FrameMaker Document
Each cell has two paragraphs in it: Gloss term Glossary definition. Some examples that I have found problematic include: bar code A system of symbols used to identify data through length, position, size, or thickness of lines or symbols. Bar codes are normally read and printed by a machine. bar An element of a controller window that groups several buttons. Examples: function bar, status bar, subsystem bar. [I prefer "bar" to precede "bar code".] carriage lock The latch that prevents the carriage arm from being pulled to the service position. carriage rail The component of the carriage that has a carriage arm and umbilical support. See also carriage arm, umbilical support. carriage-return A character in data that forces all following text to the next line. carriage The module of a printing system that holds a printhead in position over the web, provides for printhead movement across the web, provides for printhead adjustment of skew, height, and with-stream position, and allows cross-stream printhead movement between print position and service position. See also print tower. [I prefer the order to be carriage carriage-return carriage lock carriage rail ] I tried rearranging the index sorting instructions in the reference page, without effect on the table sort. I also entered a space in the Ignore characters line there. <$symbols><$numerics><$alphabetics> --[]() Any ideas or experience from anybody welcome! Tom Kohn p.s. Table sorting has accuracy issues
