Logging FrameMaker book errors in a text file

2009-07-01 Thread Chris Despopoulos
I don't think you need scripts or FDK clients. Can't you just find/change on
the book? Of course, I forget the find char sequence for a Shift-Return, but
I'm fairly sure it exists... (I always like to advocate the low-tech solution
if at all possible.)

Gordon,
Structured documents give you much more control of FrameMaker XML output
than do unstructured documents. If you must stick with an unstructured
approach, I recommend globally replacing the forced return with a
recognizable string (e.g., "FORCED RETURN" or even the HTML "" that you
probably eventually want) that will not otherwise occur in your documents
before generating the XML. You can use an FDK client or FrameScript to make
this change in a temporary copy of the documents. Your HTML generator can
look for this string and process it appropriately.

Chris,
Wow, I was being terse! Of course, a global find/change would work. I
was thinking (but certainly did not describe) a client or script that would
make a backup copy, do the global find/change you mention, generate the
XML, and delete the backup copy.
By the way, \r can be used to enter a forced return in a dialog box.

Converting PDF to Word

2009-07-01 Thread Lea Galanter
Hi Framers,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with converting PDFs to Word docs. My
department creates our user guides in FrameMaker, but other departments
want to use our text in their materials as well, so they ask me for a
Word version. I have been using Adobe Acrobat to save the PDF as a Word
doc but it really looks awful and puts the text in weird chunks --
useable but not pretty. (Yes, we could use a real content management
system--we've already asked, and the answer has been an emphatic No.)

I started looking for applications that can create a good Word version
of a PDF, but thought I might ask here in case anyone is already using
one that they can highly recommend (something not expensive).

Thanks!

Crash on import PDF comments

2009-07-01 Thread Paquet, Rebecca S (IS)
WinXP Svc Pk 2 on PC with 1G RAM
FrameMaker 9p230
Acrobat Professional 8.1.2

Crash scenario:
1. Create PDF using FM 9. (File>Save as PDF with "Generate PDF for
review only" selected)
2. Edit PDF using Acrobat 8.1.2 and save with edit marks/comments.
3. Select Import PDF comments into FM. (Have selected with all files in
book open and with no files in book open.)
4. Crash with message:
Internal Error 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0. FrameMaker has
detected a serious problem and must quit.

Ran process with Task Manager open and have not seen memory or CPU usage
hit maximum.

I know my machine is woefully underpowered, and have requested an
upgrade. But, I don't see anything that indicates that this is a
hardware problem. Can anyone point me to a solution?

Thanks in advance,
Becky

Can Word identify graphic file names?

2009-07-01 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
It depends on how the graphics were inserted. When you insert graphics
in Word you have the option to link them to the source file. If they are
inserted and linked (or just linked), than in all versions of Word until
Word 2007 you could select the graphic and press SHIFT+F9 to reveal the
field code including the path. If they are inserted in the doc (and not
linked), than Word saved them in the doc itself so there is no path.

I don't know how much more "editable" PDFs from Acrobat 9 are -- or should be.
PDF is an output medium, and the occasional "touching up" is really all one
should do with the content of a PDF.

Oh, wait -- you're coming from 5. You're probably talking about the commenting
functionality.

(Garnier) That's right. The docs are circulated internally for review during
the various phases of the product development. Since the manuals are very
technical we get lots of written input during the review process. The Field
Engineers try out the different versions of the product and at the same they
also have access to the pdfs wherein they can provide their feedback and
additional contents. The final versions of the docs are always secured.

> Uninstalled distiller 5.0 and installed 9.0. For Manual conversion ?Save

Adobe moved the location of the job options files (with v7, I believe) from
somewhere in the Acrobat installation directory tree to somewhere in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users. Just search your C: drive for *.joboptions
and then copy the ones you're missing from the old location to the new.

(Garnier) The job options are very much in the installation directory-
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Settings.

I don't know exactly what you mean when you say "the tool is unable to locate
... the distiller instance." As someone else noted, the name of the printer
instance has changed to Adobe PDF, but if you've successfully installed Acrobat
Pro 9, you should have that printer instance and it should be using a port
named "FILE:". Check Control Panel > Printers and Faxes to be sure..

(Garnier) What I meant was that?the Adobe PDF is set as?the default printer.
Still
when I select "Save as" and select the doc details and proceed to create the
PDF, Framemaker throws the above errors. Adobe PDF is very much there and so
are the joboptions in the install location.

I uninstalled FM and Acrobat 9.0, cleaned up the registries as suggested by
others in the list and re-installed FM and Acrobat but still I continue to get
the same errors as mentioned above. In short "Save As" does not work with FM
7.0 after installing Acrobat Pro 9.0. But I can distill to ps and then convert
to PDF without any problems. The generated pdf too is perfect.

HTH!
Richard

this change in a temporary copy of the documents. Your HTML generator can
