RE: can a chapter in a book be set to conditional?

2009-09-09 Thread Ulrike Forsberg (UFO)
My objection to building two books is the risk of producing a wrong
manual because I forgot that I had an extra book for one of the manuals
(you all know that things can get rather hectic close to a deadline).
What I have done until now for the 3 products is that I changed the
variables and the conditional text settings to produce the specific
manual. The cover pages are added to the pdf file, they are done in a
different program, so no advantage here for working with three books.
Two books for 3 manuals will be the solution, and I have to note down in
my procedure that there is a separate book for one of the three manuals.

Thanks for all the feedback, have a nice day everybody,

Ulrike

 Hi Framers,
 I have a book file with a number of chapters and appendices. I use the
 same book file for 3 manuals, which I control with 3 conditional text

 One of the appendices is only used in 2 of the manuals. Can I make

You're less likely to make a mistake if the process for producing each
book is the same. That's why I suggested a separate book for each
manual.

Name each book appropriately for the manual version it produces. As Fred
noted, each book should have its own generated files (TOC, etc.), so
store the variables and condition settings in one of those. When you
want to produce the Widget 1000 User Guide, open widget_1000.book,
import variables and conditions from its TOC to the other files in the
book, and you're all.

It's having one process for book A and another for book B that's likely
to cause trouble.

IMHO, YMMV.

Two additional points:

-- There are cases where the hypertext markers are all valid, yet the
resulting link is very small due to the character format affecting the
marker only (eg when copying a gotolink marker from one paragraph to

You can fix this by first applying default paragraph font to the entire

The link location/size can be inspected in Acrobat (when the Link tool is

-- If the link works in FrameMaker (view only document, or regular document
with Ctrl-Alt-click), but not in Acrobat: in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog

A sample FM7 files which demonstrates a valid hypertext marker resulting in

This setup says that you really have the .gif and .png graphics already in
existence, and they are located at C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus.
Is that correct? That's not the *same* MEMSplus dir you are referencing
as the wrap and ship dirs, is it? I can't tell because you didn't say
where you were running this from. It shouldn't be, or you'd be saying
to copy them to themselves, which does nothing (and is in fact ignored,
we check for that).

Also, it's better to have the wrap and ship dirs separate. For
OmniHelp, you typically run an ArchiveCommand to .zip the results
in wrap, and then we move that zip to ship. Many projects can
share the same ship; it makes distribution much easier if they do.

If you actually want graphics generated (which is poorer quality, if
you already have them available), as David thinks, you'd need to set
[Graphics]UseGraphicPreviews=Yes.

Also, if you use StripGraphPath=No, and don't set a GraphPath, you
are saying to preserve the original paths from the Frame files.
Those are unlikely to work. If you are putting the graphics in
the same dir as the HTML, you definitely want StripGraphPath=Yes.

HTH!

Subject: Mif2Go graphics question

Hi All,

I'm using Mif2Go to generate OmniHelp. I'm trying to copy my referenced
graphics into the distribution directory. My mif2htm.ini has these settings:

[FDK]
WriteEquations=Yes
WriteAllGraphics=No

[Automation]
WrapAndShip=Yes
WrapPath=.\MEMSplus
ShipPath=.\MEMSplus
CopyGraphicsFrom=C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus
GraphCopyFiles= *.gif *.png

[Graphics]
UseGraphicPreviews=No
StripGraphPath=No
UseOriginalGraphicNames=Yes

The graphics are not written to the wrap directory so all the graphics are
missing from the final htm output. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

[Graphics]UseGraphicPreviews=Yes.

Also, if you use StripGraphPath=No, and don't set a GraphPath, you
are saying to preserve the original paths from the Frame files.
Those are unlikely to work. If you are putting the graphics in
the same dir as the HTML, you definitely want StripGraphPath=Yes.

HTH!

Changing Spelling Checker (Dictionary)

What is the most efficient way to publish the same content in two
English variants (i.e., British English and American English) and to
check spelling in the two versions?

PS vs Save as PDF

2009-09-09 Thread karyn.sm...@aero.bombardier.com

What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a PS file and distilling it
to a PDF vs the "Save as PDF" option? Thanks.

Help: File gone berserk

2009-09-09 Thread Lea Galanter
I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I attempted to create a PDF
yesterday of a book that I've created numerous times before. For some
unknown reason I received an error message in the log indicating that a
certain font was not available. I occasionally get this message but I
ignore it, because I have no idea why Frame thinks I'm using a font it
doesn't have. It's never stopped a PDF from being created, until
yesterday. Frame simply refused to create the PDF. I have no idea what's
wrong with the file (it's the cover). The only font used is Arial. There
are no other fonts in the file. I even did a Select All and reapplied
Arial just in case, but to no avail.

Has anyone ever had this problem before? Is there some way to search
Frame files for a specific font in order to change it?

Thanks for any help!

Lea Galanter

OFF-TOPIC POST Digital Voice Recorders

2009-09-09 Thread Will Husa
I've been using the Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder for about 4 months
now to interview SME's and record conference calls. It was the best
investment that I ever made for this type of product.

Subject: OFF-TOPIC POST Digital Voice Recorders

I am looking to purchase a USB Digital Voice Recorder for interviewing
SME's. So I just need good voice quality for mono voice, long battery
life, long recording time and ease of transfer to my computer. What have
been your experiences with them? Any recommendations? TIA

Thank you,
